The lowly potato.

Apparently, the green stuff on potatoes is a neurotoxin and can cause coma and death. If you keep your potatoes in the light, and not buried in the cupboard, get rid of them if they start to go green. Since potatoes are quickly becoming the most important food source in the world, even overtaking rice according to some sources. It's much more nutritious than rice.

Potatoes produce Solanine. Solanine is a glycoalkaloid poison found in species of the nightshade family, such as potatoes. It can occur naturally in any part of the plant, including the leaves, fruit, and tubers (eyes). It is very toxic even in small quantities. Solanine has both fungicidal and pesticidal properties, and it is one of the plant's natural defenses. It's important to note that, via selective breeding, we have produced a very toxic product. When these commercial varieties turn green, even they can approach concentrations of solanine of 1000 mg/kg (1000 ppmw). In normal potatoes, solanine levels may be as little as 3.5% of the breeders' maximum. The breeders are what is being sold commercially as seed crops.

Solanine is also found in other plants, mainly in the mostly-deadly nightshade family, which includes a minority of edible plants including the tomato.

Ever wonder why the tomato was believed to be poisonous? Because people died eating them.

Yeah well I bet there's a yogert enzime somewhere that can safely digest this toxin. Yogert has come a long way in these modern times. I like yogert on flapjacks with pineapple chunks.

Actually, it has more to do with insecure, jealous people who try to start petty flame wars on internet forums such as this.

I suppose the saying "Neccessity is the mother of invention," does ring true.

Speak for yourself. Or better yet, read the book titled "The Structure of Scientific Revolutions" by Thomas S. Kuhn.
