Posted: 2/27/2008 2:17:13 AM | The law in most Western countries proscribes heterosexual relationships between someone younger than 16 years of age. With people who have homosexual tendencies, the age allowed for consensual sex is usually 18 or 21. Pragmatically speaking, the legislator who wishes to make laws which ban sexual activity between young people would face a number of potential problems. Sexual activity amoung teenagers is quite high, and usually starts from age 14. It is more reasonable to try and create laws which shield younger people from predators and pedophiles.
Ethically speaking one would need to carefully judge each situation according to its context. I would argue that a relationship between a teacher who is 28 years old and a student who is 17, while not illegal in Australia, would constitute a breach of professional ethics on the part of the teacher. Also in a situation involving a university, I think a Professor would be on murky ground if they were say 50, and their student 25, and they engaged in an intimate relationship.
In the case of a 2 5 year old having a relationship with a woman aged 17, I would agree the age gap is too great. But it would be different if the girl was 18 or 19, and I think that might be acceptable, though she may well be happier with someone closer to her in age. | |

I can agree that it is unacceptable for women below 18 to have sex with older men. But I do not agree re the opposite: I lost my virginity at 16 to a 19 year old Greek woman and got my real introduction to sex and love at 17 to a 23 year old French woman! It was fine with me and never regretted it. Should the state or my parents have sued them? So I only agree re minor females not minor (hetero) males. Is that gender unequal? So be it. 17-18 year old men do not need protection from their parents or the state as to what age women they date or have sex/romance with. If 16-17 year old females do (need that protection), so be it. No prob with that rule, IMO. As a 23 or 27 or 45 year old I had or have no interest in any woman below 20 (or virgins of any age), and my interest is usually for women around my age (plus or minus 7-8 years).

Posted: 4/10/2008 11:50:30 PM | When I was 19 I fell in love with a 15 year old... she was more grown up and mature than any of the girls my age and knew what she was looking for out of life and in a relationship. We were together for about 9 months until certain circumstances split us apart and made it so we could not be together. I am now nearly 22 (this upcoming Wednesday, WOOT!!!) and she will be 18 in July. During the time that I was with her we had such an awesome relationship and I still have not found someone who is more mature than she was.
If the minor is mature and responsible enough to be in the relationship, I am all for it. I realize that not all minors are ready for the type of committment and responsibility that comes from a real relationship, but if they are and willing to be in it, have at it. Just because a person is interested in someone who isn't neccasarily legal does not mean that the relationship shouldnt happen. Think about it.... When your 50, will it be frowned upon if you date someone who is 45 or 40??

I know at 17, I had a crush on a 24 year old. We made out in a park. I am not lying when I tell you that that purple-skyed Manhattan night was one of the best moments of my life and still is. I can remember every look, every word, every kiss. Although it didn't work out, I wouldn't trade that experience for anything.
A 17 year old isn't a child (and in some areas of the law, isn't considered a child), and many aren't as vulnerable as you believe. I'm sure my father saw me as a vulnerable child at 17, but I wasn't. And I was certainly no target, sitting there in a tight white shirt, licking my lips and stealing sips of his martini at Friday's, feeling old and cool and worldly. I knew exactly what I was doing.
If it was reversed genders (the woman being 25, the guy being 17), I don't think most people would call him a vulnerable child or a target. I think most people would call him "a lucky dude". | |

I've been reading a lot of these posts and I personally dont see what the big deal is. We are talking about 25 and 17 not 9 and 40... A lot of people are taking this to a whole new extreme when the man was simply asking if 25 and 17 was ok.
I am 18 years old and when i was 16 i was dating a 22 year old. Just because he was 7 years older than me does not mean that he was "preying" on me, or that he was "hunting" me down... A lot of you need to get your head out of your asses and accept the fact that times do change, and people do mature because of situations around them at different ages...
As far as it goes with the posts about "18 year olds just believe that they're more mature", i have to completely disagree with you, even though i know a stab will come back at me about saying how i am wrong, but to each their own. When i was 16 i was very mature for my age, knew exactly what situations and outcomes would come from my actions, i was not being abused by my boyfriend at that time, and there was nothing mentally wrong with him or any reason why he wasnt with someone who was his age, there was attraction and we got along extremely well...simply put.
I understand that a lot of the posters have children who are considered a minor but at the same time, this is their life. I personally feel that all people mature fully at different ages, im not talking about physically but mentally and i think that is what this comes down to. Im not saying its ok to go and have sex with someone who is 13, i do believe that 15-16 and no earlier is when people should maybe have sex, but who am i to tell someone when or when they cannot engage in sexual activies? and who is everyone else to say so either?
I am 18, fully mature (even though some posters believe that at 18 you just tend to believe you are mature and can make proper decisions), full time college student training to become a police officer, have a very good solid head on my shoulders, have life experience that im sure many of you have not been put around, and yes i am a lot more mature than a lot of people in my demographic, and yes i do date older men, and i am attracted to older men, does that mean that they are doing something wrong because of the fact that they are attracted to me? Simple answer folks, no. Some 17-18 year old WOMEN out there are 10X more mature then some of the 25 year old women that claim to be more "experienced, and mature in every way", which is completely bullsh!t.
And just incase someone decides to throw out the "You're becoming a police officer yet support 16 year olds having sex" card, im from canada and the legal age here is 14 so no, i am not saying that, but i believe that by the age of 17 that a female and young woman can most definitely make these decisions for themselves, and if a man who is 25 wants to be with someone who is a mature young adult then so be it, leave their lives to them and but out. | |

Posted: 10/20/2008 6:55:05 PM | it is only when you start associating sex with sin or bad when people start judging according to their conditioned mind of society...in Holland the age allowed to have sex if in agreement is 12 or 13 years and law will not do anything if parents will complain...they reason if she already that old than she should know what she can and want with her body...an extensive research has been done by the Dutch government and it was never a great harm to the society as a whole....
So depending how stuck up people are in their conditioned minds is how they react to sex...considering it dirty, mortal sin, etc. etc. whereas it is actually meant to bring love and joy and purity in relationships ...anyway there are more thoughts on this but nonetheless it is quite controversial....think whatever you want to think...that that is your truth.... | |

That's not exactly reassuring. Aren't you meant to just arrest people for committing crimes? It's the role of the judicial system to hand out the punishments.

In all instances the men were very manipulative and they always went after the younger girls. Once the girl they were with were early 20's, they would move on to another teen. The girls were always mature for their age and the guys immature. So I don't find maturity to be a deciding factor. I myself have always been attracted to older guys. About the 10 year range. Looking back, I'm so glad that I never had a relationship with an older guy at that age. Even as a mature teen, I was not in a place in my life for that. It has nothing to do with maturity. A high schooler cannot relate to someone in the workplace. It's two different worlds. Left up to the teen, they will most likely chose the relationship, they will say they are mature enough for it. But as any adult who has ever come into contact with a teen can atest, teens are sure that they know everything about everything, but aren't as smart as they think. I'm not saying that all relationships in this bracket are the same as I've described. But all the ones that I've witnessed are. I do look at a mid-twenties guy with a teen girl and wonder why he can't function with other adults. I have never seen the exception to the rule, so for now I treat it as if there isn't one. The law here in Ct states that the age of consent is 16. However... that only applies to a minor having sex with another minor. If you're a minor..(under 18) and have sex with another minor (under age 18) your age of consent is 16. If you're an adult (18,19, 25 or 30...or how ever old you are) and you have sex with a minor (under the age of 18) the age of consent does NOT apply to the minor..it is statuatory rape, and will likely get you registered as a sex offender.
Having been in law enforcement.. I find that more creeps seek out to date younger females because they lack the social skills to compete with grown women. (18 or older). Sure.. maturity is a huge factor.. but the law is the law..and if you don't like the laws.. then abide by them...and/or do something to change them. But just because you don't like a law, or you don't agree with the validity, does NOT give you the right to break them.

There are some girls out ther that start thier period at age 9 or 10..and you're saying it's okay for them to engage in sex..based on the fact that they have thier period already? Pathetic argument...disturbing...to say the least.
My own daughter is 18... and EVERYONE that meets her says she looks and acts like she is in her 20's. Yet she never had any desire to be with a grown man. She managed to envelope herself with people that were her own age that were mature..and avoid the immature idiots that were her age.
People who make excuses for breaking the rules..are just that.. making excuses.

It all depends on the maturity of the young person in question. When I was 17, I had a full time job, my own flat, and had been raising my younger brother from the age of 13. I had grown up too quickly!
But I am also aware that there were people of my age, still at home with parents, hanging around in bus stops drinking etc etc...
I wouldn't have such a strong opinion on somebody I didn't know, however if this same situation happens to someone you do know and you have concerns, I would recommend keeping a close eye for their welfare. (If they are legal of course) | |
