Abstinence is being preached in the USA and Canada too, it's not working out as planned so says the statistical data about teens and sex. I guess they forgot to factor in the fact that we are programmed to have sex and once the hormones start flowing and or the first self inflicted orgasm has come and gone dating, petting and all that pther stuff will follow in fairly short order. | |

You make it sound like I'd say a 13 year old girl dating a 30 year old guy would sit well with me when the truth is no I would not be comfortable with that at all! This topic is about a 17 year old girl whom IMO, and in the opinion of the laws here in Ontario, is quite capable of deciding if she wants to date a guy that's 25. Also you mentioned bars and drinking more than once....WTF does that really have to do with dating? There's lots more to dating than going out and getting shit faced at a bar for crying out loud! When I was dating the girl I mentioned earlier the bar thing never bothered us as neither of us were interested in wasting our brain cells on booze or drugs for that matter.

As far as i can tell (and this is just from a quick googling granted!!) the legal age to drive is 16 in the US. At 16 you are able to take your own life in your hands and those of many many others at the wheel of what is basically a lean mean killing machine, yet someone is not mature enough to decide on their own sexual destiny until they are 18?! That just doesn't make sense to me!!

I've seen it work before, it's just extremely rare. In most cases they would be mismatched. I myself have dated a couple older teens when I was in my mid-late 20's. They were very rare exceptions for their age brackets. Honors classes, very worldly, and rather experienced. The vast majority of teens though are depressingly thick-headed when it comes to maturity. | |

Yea I read\spell funny sometimes and hit the wrong key when I haven't got my glasses on but regardless....my point was that you made it sound like "the bar" was some all important thing to dating which it is not to many.
Mahogany really think about what your typing here, I mean who was it that determined what age entitles a person to be considered an adult able to make competent decisions regarding their own life? Do you whole heartedly agree that 18 is "the age" ? Same thing as who was it that determined that at age 65 you should be put out to pasture and pensioned off for your own good? Same thing isn't it? Someone just pulled an age out of the hat and said that's it this is when your a senior citizen, an adult or even a young adult? I don't swallow that prescription without daring to ponder things a moment and have a look at the real world and the diverse people that fill it...and I've pass that way of thinking along to my own children. How can every child on the planet be deemed an adult at age 18 no matter what and until that age is reached we feel the need to dictate their life to them in every little way. Sheesh we got kids on most parts of the planet, including ours, that are making lifelong career decisions at the age of 13 yet we want to tell them at the age of 17 who they can date? That's just ludicrous and bizarre behavior from someone they'd consider a peer!
Anyways....
I'll not change my position in saying that if this girl at 17 is interested in this guy that's 25 we should just MOOB and let them follow the path that's working for them. | |

I think you've nailed it. Girls mature at a younger age than boys, and I think it's quite possible for a young teen girl to have more to talk about with someone older, and find his company much more enjoyable.
The decision to have sex has to be between them. I don't think we should automatically assume that a guy is "hitting on" young girls just because he happens to be a few years older and has found someone he enjoys being with. What's important is if they truely share some interests and enjoy being with each other.
If a guy is ONLY seeking out young girls, then that's another matter, but if he happens to meet one and they develop a relationship, then I think it's okay, even to have sex, if both want it she feels ready for it. | |

It depends on where you want to draw the line. An 18 year old isn't necessarily any more mature than a 17 year old, and being 18 only makes someone an adult as far as the law is concerned. There's no magical change that happens on our 18th birthday that prepares us to deal with the world. If someone is 17 and capable enough to make and stand by such a decision in the face of the legal implications, I don't see anything wrong with it. At 19 I was dating someone in their mid-20's, and in the end that really isn't so different beyond the legal aspect, is it?
To me, there's a big difference between a guy or gal trolling for teenagers and someone who just happens across something that clicks for them.
The last point is sort of moot if the person doesn't find bars or drinking particularly appealing. | |

How sick I am?? Well first off she has 2 parents and second is that general attitude and comment reminds me of the time we had other parents get in our face because we refused to lie to our children about Santa Claus just so it would uphold the BS they were feeding their own kids  Anyway if our daughter decided she wanted to date a guy that was 20 the mom and I are both confident she'd be mentally capable of making that choice without dictator'ish interference from us...same goes for our son. Isn't the job of parenting suppose to be about guidance, support and leadership as opposed to ruling their life with an iron fist? I mean I hear other parents at work talk about how they won't let their daughters, and notice I say only daughters,date until they are 16 and in the same breath they whine and complain about how rebellious their daughters are! Yea like that strategy is working, their daughters are out sneaking around with boys, telling lies about their whereabouts, being stressed and worried about getting caught and punished...gee what a life for a teen to live

I know the laws are f*cked up and most times it doesn't make sense, but there is still a reason why a minor cant do certain things, they cant vote, purchase real estate,run for public office, for the most part play professional sports, obviously Tennis, soccer are the exceptions but lets not digress.
Some of you are fixated on my comment about the bars, I used the example of bar because you have to be a certain age to get it, it wasn't about going out and getting shit faced for shits and giggles
