Not for me personally. Since we are on the topic of pictures, I also bypass guys with pictures of taken of themselves in the bathroom mirror (totally lame), pictures clearly taken of themselves by themselves (get some friends to take your picture) or with other girls in the picture (if you hang out with all these hot girls, what are you doing here?).

However, I do have a funny story about guys with no shirts on in their pictures. A friend of mine is new to this site and like a kid in a candy store went totally Buck Hoss emailing guys she found on here for a few hours one night. The next day, she wanted to show me all of the guys' profiles that she emailed the night prior. I was going through them and commented to her that all of the guys she emailed had no shirts on in their pictures! She immediatly got defensive and said that that wasn't true. She had to look through about 15 profiles before she found one guy that she emailed the actually had a shirt on. I started looking the profiles and reading interests and commenting to her about them. Then she said "I don't actually read them". Oy.......

without a doubt ...a complete turn off...especially when it is their main profile picture.......I say ...put some clothes on! It leaves a bad impression, at least with me

when you find a profile with pic(s) with a guy obviously showing what hes got, what impression does that leave?
It leaves the initial impressuion that the guy may be an ignorant steroid-monkey

Speaking from the viewpoint of an older woman I can say going topless for a photo is for the young and in shape only. I do appreciate the photos of a nice, muscle-toned tan body. For me its not a turn off and shows that they truly care about their phisical appearance and take the appropriate measures to maintain it.

It is so rare that I happen upon an older man who cares to keep in shape.
Usually I am honored with the beer belly phisique.
Except for my ex who is a true fitness fanatic.
So all of you young guys,, keep up the good work,, I, for one, appreciate it.

Does nothing for me, really. Honestly, someone's who's that interested in fitness isn't going to be interested in me anyway, so it's kind of a moot point. While I've hauled my butt out to exercise to lose weight, I'll be honest... I still kind of hate it, so the gym rat type isn't going to be a great match for me.

It's obvious women aren't as visual as men and they certainly aren't as gullible and taken by a nice body. nothing wrong with being muscular and fit, but if that's all there is to you then well you could have the best fittest bod in the world and women are still gonna think you are dull and boring..

It's almost the same as guys who post pics of themselves with their cars

either way it's LOOK AT ME!!!!

From my perspective I'm damned if I do and am damned if I don't. But I'm ever so slightly less damned if I do.

1. Women rarely message guys as it is on here from what I've read and experienced, so if I ever hope to recieve a message I've got to display something above the "norm" to get noticed, or even to get my profile read.

2. Putting up a regular face shot is as good as having no picture at all (if you are are a normal or even an above average looking guy). Unless you have the chiseled good looks of Wentworth Miller, no girl will click on your profile, let alone message you.

3. I realise some women may be indimidated/turned off/repulsed/take some sort of moral high ground - but the ratio of those attracted to those repulsed imho should be higher than if I had a "normal" profile picture getting zero views to begin with.

4. In response to the women thinking we are gym rat meatheads who think about ourselfs 24/7 - this could not be further from the truth. At least for me, in actuality, my effort into working out, bettering my physique and posting the picture has been done purely in the vein of attracting a woman and has nothing to do with my ego.

5. Being muscular does not automatically make a guy an idiot, or lack a personality. My motives behind the body are simple: the exterior is a "hook", so to speak, to spark a womens initial interest, so that she will hang around long enough to get to know what I'm about. If it were not for my physique, this would not happen, as why would she choose below average me when she could have something better?

- However this plan has not worked out hehe, so maybe I do need a rethink.

I hope this post has been insightful!

If guys wanna post pictures of themselves with their shirts off they'd probably be better off if they were actually doing something in it like playing a sport, or at the beach swimming or something. You get to show off your body chicks dig you because it shows you're athletic and you don't come off as egotistical or arrogant. flexing your muscles in front of amirror Derek Zoolander style looks well a bit tacky..

Ignite the Ibex

Good post.

It's here where a significant double standard exists. There are plenty of women on PoF that really get to celebrate their beauty and attractiveness and they are rewarded with attention. If a man puts in the time and effort into caring for his body internally and externally and has the ordasity to show that off he's suddenly a "turn off" to women?

If there are women with a lot of anecdotal evidence to support the theory that gym rats are meatheads then I want to know but I admire the discipline to get up and hit the gym or go running or Yoga or any physical activity that both genders do and I'd never fault someone for it.

Is there a tasteful way to show your athleticism? Sure but not every guy posing in a muscle shirt is arrogant or narcissistic. Frankly the larger you get as a male the harder your shirts become to purchase so I understand the catch-22.

Maybe it is far from the truth,
However, whether you are a "gym rat meathead" or not, you are giving people the initial impression that you are nothing more than a "gym rat meathead"

Being muscular does not automatically make a guy an idiot, or lack a personality.
But giving the impression that you like to show off your muscles, certainly may give the impression that you are an idiot who lacks personality.

Sorry for being truthful.
The original poster was asking what impression those sort of profile pictures make, and I answered honestly.

I got news for you Obsidian, this thing works both ways. I show a little cleavage and apparently that makes me a whore in most of the men's eyes on this site. Apparently cleavage is synonymous with ''I want sex with every man possible''. At least this is what I have been told over and over again as to why men always are hassling me for sex. Even had one guy say ''dress like a slut, and I'll treat you like one''. However, the sex messages are always there no matter what kind of outfit i'm wearing. But for the most part, I am not taken seriously. Because I have boobs. And you can tell they are on the large size even in the high neck tshirt shot.

So it's not a far stretch for women to think guys flexing their muscles and showing off their stuff are not really serious either. And some women do think, damn he's arrogant, or think you're going to be in the gym all day, everyday. And many women, like me, with less than perfect bodies are NOT even going to try to contact you because of the intimidation factor.

Ibex is very wrong. All women are not the same. The men I have met from this site, to talk to or to go out with, have all been men I have sent the first email to. Why? Because I know what I like as far as looks and personality goes. I don't care how hot and ripped the guy is, if he doesn't have brain cell one or anything in common with me, I don't want to talk or meet with him.

What attracts me most on a man is his great smile. And Obsidian, I saw a post you made the other day in the forums, and that was what I noticed about your photo, that you have a great smile. It got my attention. If I were browsing through photos, then I'd more apt to click on your profile than Ibex's.

Oh and I'd skip by both of you for Zain because I'm really into Indian men big time. So it has to do with personal preferences, not who's flexing their muscles, or who is the hottest guy. Unless of course I were 21 and then my priorities would be completely different I'm sure.

I have muscles, but I'm not exactly the most tanned guy in the world. I was thinking of photographing myself topless flexing to mock all the dumbasses who photograph themselves in the bathroom doing just that. Hopefully any woman interested in me would be smart enough to know I'm pulling a Chris Farley and not serious.

OH yeah ....one photo i really hate is the standing in front of mirror holding a cell phone up to take the photo....you know they make timers on a lot of cameras these days. oh i hate the cell phonein the photo pics...grrrrr

but frankly I dont think they'd get your humor...I've seen lots of guys out of shape, or guys my age or older flexing shirtless and I think...''yikes put your clothes back on''. I can understand if you got it, flaunt it...but if you don't, keep it under wraps and highlight your nice features.

Ferruginous I totally get what you are saying, and as I have pointed out I will be limiting the amount of girls that will view my profile. But greatly increasing the overall number of views to my profile than having a bog standard pic that warrants no profile views.

i.e. 50 pissed of girls and 5 interested girls as a result of topless pic vs. 0 pissed off girls and 0 interested girls as a result of a normal pic.

raiderfan18 - you are probably quite an exception to the norm (in a good way). Girls my age tend to go for the "***hole" type, therefore I will give them what they want, at least visually, maybe I'll get a a rude up facial tattoo to really badboy it up! lol.

This is a numbers game and I will do anything I can to maximise the chances of someone viewing my profile and if that offends 50000 people in my quest to find "the one" so be it. It's better than finding no one so that it may please people whom will never contact me to begin with - who have it easy due to their gender and daily inbox flooding of emails, and ultimately will never know the perils of being male on an internet dating site!

I also hate the shirtless cell phone pics. If a guy is shirtless and flexing because he's a bodybuilder or a swimmer or something, and he's posting the photos to give you an idea of his interests at the same time, I don't really think those pictures are odd.

The shirtless bathroom mirror photo just screams, "I'm in love with myself shirtless, but I have no time for shirtless hobbies" -- and that's just dull.

Ibex,

I don't put you in that category, because at least it looks like someone else took a photo of you flexing, which means you might have friends. Or at least one.

It's the bathroom mirror "lone gunman" that puts me off a bit. I assume the same guy would laugh out loud and talk to his tv.

Ibex remember that a lot of women are in stealth mode, meaning you can't see when they view you. I had to go into this mode because I like browsing profiles (yeah i know boring life) but i want to see what's out there. But sometimes I click to view, and then after reading the profile I'm not interested, or maybe the guy had a cool photo and i wanted to see the rest...or maybe he looked cute til closer inspection. Whatever the reason it doesn't mean I'm wanting that guy, but some guys just assume because you look you must want them. So I made it where men can't see that I viewed them.

I'm thinking a lot of other intelligent women who have a lot more substance probably do this too. So you may have been getting viewed before, you just didn't know it. And then again you may be getting tons of views now but are missing out on a lot because they're not letting you see that they viewed you.

bottom line is dont' take ''views'' seriously. they mean absolutely NOTHING. Just like the ratings, and just like the adding to favorites.

I'm not going to divert my eyes away from a photo of some hot buff man. It gets my attention and I'll mutter something to myself real slow like "sweet" If there isn't any substance to go with that body my attention will quickly be lost after I'm done muttering.

But now the question is do you find yourself overemphisising attributes he has like men do with gorgous women, i.e. "she's so sweet and funny?" What I'm asking is do women fall in the same trap men do with making up reasons to be interested beyond the physical?
