| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/21/2007 1:08:27 PM | Having gone through the Russians, Filipinas, and Nigerians, almost forgot the South Africans, on various dating sites. All of them claiming to live nearby but in the second or third email temporarily abroad, I put a tracking device on all my personal emails. It reports back when and where the email was read. If it wasn't read at a location near where they are listed, I research their town, tell them I have a friend who lives there, and ask about their experiences at some local get together, or I get down to basics and ask them the name of the main hiway through town or what their phone number was when they lived in the that town. Some have given phone numbers, but never with the correct codes. Now that most people have cell phones its more difficult. Still there are web pages available that list email, names and "pictures" of people who have been caught scamming and to whom you can report your cases. Sometimes I wait a few months and then write to them again as a "newby" from an email address created for the purpose, just to see if their story and location have changed. Finally a few of those "Nigerian" scams are operated out of locations here in the US. Anyone wanting to track their emails should sign up with sites like readnotify.com. I've found it marginally useful. But some scammers now are more sophisticated blocking the notifications. I just assume if they reply without my getting notified that they read my email, they are a scammer--though they could be a sophisticated security concious internet user. | |

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/22/2007 4:34:47 AM | I always ask the "women" from Nigeria, who are really men working at a job, if they know what the initials FBI stands for. I have had a few actually answer and say "no". One "lady" thanked me so much for the compliment, then repeated how she was stuck in Nigeria because her boss in England had deposited bad checks, and if I could only send a few dollars....
On the other hand I just had a date, first one in a year after a self imposed exile, where she did show up at the restaurant, ate half the meal, then cleaned the table off down to the salt and pepper shakers, tossing it all into her take home box. She looked at her watch and said that she had to rush to a neighbor to check on her kid. Our romance lasted an hour and ten minutes. lol When making the arrangements to meet, she stated --much too business like-- that this is how she "worked" with all her dates from this site. Well, I did my charitable act and fed the hungry. This reminds me why I didn't date for year.

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/22/2007 9:54:50 AM | (A): Stop contacting anyone in Africa
(B): Contact the FBI and pass on the womens' email addresses to the FBI. They have a file on such things
This is the biggest racket around these days. Most of the 'women' are men, who make plenty of money running guns, stealing/selling blood diamonds, dealing drugs, and pimping out local hos. The internet lady in need scam is a twist on the old 'Spanish Prisoner' scam of the middle ages, and is just one more way to con money out of suckers.

or they want your e-mail address to send you links to sign up for "PAY" porn sites, or other "PAY" dating sites..

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/22/2007 10:16:58 AM | | There is a site that everyone should go to called romancescam.com This site has tons of pictures of both men and women, the Russian and Nigerian Scammers, and a whole lot of useful information. These scammers are on all sites, and everyone gets a ton of them. After a while they are easy to recognize, just from the spelling and grammar alone, but this site will give you pictures. If you think the person writing you might be a scammer, go look there. Hope this helps someone before they get hurt. It's not just POF, believe me, lol. They are everywhere. | |

| Romance Scams Posted: 9/24/2007 10:22:09 PM | | I too have been getting a flurry of suspect attention via a famous IM program since I signed up for a paid service associated with that famous IM program. In the last 72 hours I have been messaged by 6 "American or UK women" that are mysteriously located in Nigeria. Also I have been getting e-mails from a "Russian Woman." The Russian is evidentally a new ID for the scammer, because, I can't track "her" down anywhere. I almost forgot to mention the woman that claimed to live nearby, but, in reality lives in SE Asia. | |

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/24/2007 11:35:33 PM | | I have reported the saem profile at least twice as being a scam, but they've never deleted the acct. The same picture and profile witha different name claimed to be from my city... some hottie claiming to be an auto mechanic. Please, do I look THAT gullible? Anyway, we have an infamous mayor, who is on the news like EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, and since she couldn't name him, she knew she ws busted, closed down that profile, and opened up a new one. | |

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/25/2007 12:28:15 AM | I use the mail notify from readnotify.com to find out where they are really coming from and they are all from nigeria so far.I had one that was on romancescams.com several times and I confronted her with it,just for kicks. she claims that she is now at this address: here is my home address of where i do live in USA. ok 3232 Collins Ave St Luois MO 63114.. That's what she wrote and the tracking comes from Nairobi, Kenya . I asked her for a picture of her holding a sign with my name but she came up with excuses so that was even more proof, not that I needed anymore but wanted to see how far she would go.
Good news, some of them have been disactivated from since I sent the information to the site.I guess it's just a matter of time before they get a new account.
I listed Essy Samuels on romancescams.com if you want to have a look, she was the smartest one and she is really who she claims.

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/27/2007 8:46:01 PM | The key phrase in your post is "too good to be true". Best advice of all, trust your gut. If something doesn't FEEL right, it probably isn't, even if your mind tells you you're overreacting. In relationships, I look less for looks and other superficialities and more for shared interests and outlook - the stuff that lies below the surface.
You also mentioned 'falling in love' after the second or third e-mail. I wonder how you can truly fall in love with someone you've never met or even developed any kind of meaningful, reciprocal relationship with. Ann Landers says that "love is friendship that has caught on fire." People can pretend to be whoever they want to be on the internet, so two or three e-mails isn't much of a foundation to build on.
On another internet dating website , I got an e-mail from a woman who said she found me very attractive. A little warning light went off in my head because:
a) I'd just joined the site and my profile was in a somewhat unfinished state, and b) women never tell me I'm very attractive. No joke, it's true.
My looks are below-average, and average if you're in a charitable mood, so I tend to be somewhat suspicious when people behave towards me in a manner I wouldn't normally expect.
I e-mailed her anyway, because I was curious. The reply I got back was from a very attractive looking girl who said she worked in a nightclub. Big non-starter right there, because I don't drink, and said so in my profile. What I noticed more was the structure of her writing - it was fractured, and the grammar was a little off. In fact, it read the way Russians or other Eastern Europeans write when English is not their first language. My best guess is she might be a Mafiya moll. So I ignored her subsequent e-mails rather than get in any deeper.
As a rule, I won't approach Russian or other foreign women, particularly those from countries where poverty and crime are significant problems. Usually women from these countries are either looking for a meal ticket in a well-off country, or are working with scammers, extortionists and other con-artists to try to extract cash from their too-trusting marks.
Another woman (on POF of all places) rated my pic very highly and so I thought I'd respond. She was eager to meet right away, even though she lives in a town four hours away, and wouldn't tell me anything about herself - her profile lacked meaningful detail to begin with.
I wasn' t trying to pry into her life, I just wanted to know who she was, what she liked to do and from there determine if we had anything in common that would justify getting more involved. God only knows who (or what) I might have met up with if I had agreed to meet without trying to check out her bona fides.
The sad truth is that if you're a man and having trouble attracting women in your home country, getting a 'mail-order' bride isn't going to solve your problem. In fact, scammers target homely guys because their desperation almost always clouds their judgment.
Bottom line - approach all relationships with a healthy dose of skepticism - at least in the beginning.

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/27/2007 8:49:12 PM | My point is: I met women i like but they looked too good to be there, maybe that's my problem. How do you know they were really women?
Stick around long enough and you'll get more.

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/27/2007 9:39:38 PM | Guys aren't the only target for these scams. I met a guy in Yahoo that had great English writing skills, said he owned property in GA (the reason he was in GA room) on and on. Long story short.....he wanted me to buy him a phone and send to him. Evidently the situation is so bad (the history of their scams) that most business won't attempt to sell to them. This man, Fred Lumey, wanted to send me a present. I gave him my office address after telling him that I would accept no gifts but maybe a small token of something specific from his country. Next thing I know, all sorts of stuff starts showing up. Watches and electronics. He also sent me a check via DHL. My banker assured me that this was to avoid mail fraud. Bottom line, I managed to get him to agree to my sending all that crap to him via UPS (his account) and got him off my back. But I was suckered for the moment. He had some interesting stories, etc. But these people are in a big office (almost like a bookie set up for illegal gambling) and they work these scams 24/7. One of the worst I've heard of is the purchase of cars, etc from Ebay....they get the seller to agree to front the shipping etc. ...they send the bogus check and the seller is out big bucks plus the cost of dealing with a bad check. Be warned! Becca | |

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/28/2007 12:57:44 AM | | Please dont tell me there are people in this world that would send money to someone just after a few emails. Just wow..... | |
|
| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/28/2007 9:55:29 AM | Loneliness and being single can be a terrible combination and definitely leads to poor judgement... these scams wouldn't exist if people weren't falling for them head over heals.
I'd like to add that I've gotten bucket loads of IM's from women from South Africa on Yahoo's IM system... all claiming to be American's working in South Africa. I don't get as many Nigerian IM scam messages anymore, but I still get lots of Nigerian e-mail scam messages claiming they need my help to move millions of dollars out of foreign bank accounts.
Lastly beware of genuine mail-order brides... there was a news story in Houston not too long ago about a man that had married a Columbian woman he'd met on some personals website (devoted to matching Columbian women with American men)... he paid for all her expenses to come live with him here in Texas, then within 3 months of her moving here and living with him she went to the police and claimed he had abused her, filed for an annullment, had him arrested and though she is no longer a US Citizen (since the wasn't married to him long enough) she cannot be deported because of a law against deporting a battered woman. Ergo she most likely used this guy as a free ride to get into the US in such a way that she cannot be deported now, and he's still facing charges for something he swears he did not do!
It truely suxs to be a single guy. The number of ways to get taken are just limitless I swear!

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/28/2007 9:18:12 PM | wow!!! I started to check out dating sites, just out of curiosity and somehow got caught up in these stories.I guess i was looking for some attention but instead got people emailing that I do not want.
As soon as love you comes in to my email by someone that I just contacted,I know it's a scam, especially after one or two. You are right,I'll stick to locals and hope for the best. I just received yet another one in my email and I don't even know where this one comes from!!!
I guess I should start concentrating on the more important things.
Thank you all for your responses, I will limit myself to my state.

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/29/2007 6:45:17 PM | I am not sure here folks. I am still working on my English and I try the best I can. . To Mr. Alain: Yes, I do claim I am from Russia ( because I am). I am 5-11 because I am. I do have very often broken English because I teach accounting and my students know that I am a number girl and not a language girl.
I have been in this country for only 8 years I try the best I can. It is at least diminishing for me to get this discouraging level from people only because I am Russian and I were trying to meet U. S boys and my written/oral English is not all good and I was crying when I was in graduate school and my English teacher was telling me that :"I would make it and get it. It will take a lot of timeā¦". I am not shy about being a tall blond with an accent but based on your criteria I am a scam. How many languages do you speak? I still take my English classes and do my home work. But I know I am not as perfect as folks who were born here. in terms of English.. English is my third language.

| Scams from women on dating sites Posted: 9/29/2007 6:57:48 PM | I guess I forgot to add my 2 cents in here. I do not think that quite a few foreign ladies desrve and suspicon (spell check) on your part. You are Americans by born but some of us by choice with all this effort toward English ( even it is not perfect). I do proud of my herritage but nothing by thankful for an opportunity to explore this country and learn this language... At least I am trying...
Dear prof who posted above (I am also in academia) I would assume that you have an undersating how your foreign students writeand struggle about cultural differences? I know my grammar does Not match our APA standards...Where is your dedication to your profession? As your collegue, Sir, I do find you postings very strange. I do have a bunch of international collegues and we call ourselves :" Memebers of the university".
Please feel free to trash my English and run your soft-ware on where the posting/e-mail coming from and confront me that I am Russian/Nigerian scam. Your brilliant software will show you that I am in FL about 20 min. from my office. And yes I was there yesterday night for the Bull Game. They indeed won, the game was sold out but faculty could got those extra tcikets...
