| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 12/29/2007 10:15:20 PM | | As far as I can tell, America isn't a welfare state like Australia and the UK. There are wayyy too many single mothers on the dole, who don't do much but drop the kids off at school, watch Oprah and complain about never having enough money. | |
|
| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 12:23:59 AM | Ummmm where do you think the term "welfare mother" comes from leatheryman??? It looks like you don't know too much about American women to comment about the difference.
To use a gross stereo type on "All" Australian and British single mothers are sitting on their arses and watching Oprah is a miss guided view point, and may be the reason why you are still single.
However I give you points in posting your view, If I am any judge on the Australia female attitude, sir you are about to get a flogging! get em girls!!!!!

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 6:47:30 AM | Aaawww Leathery, don't get me started..... Wasn't the recycled water enough I raised my girl alone & worked my a*se off in horrible jobs that I'll bet you wouldn't have the b*lls to stick at & I know A LOT of single mums who've done the same all because the dropkick dads didn't want to help out. Single parents both male & female deserve a pat in the back not a slap in the face. I'm sick of aussies bashing underdogs, Howard's gone now & that stinking attitude should have gone with him! | |

I think you're falling off a pretty high horse there livewire. I know exactly where the term "welfare mother" came from, as well as I know Bill Clinton passed a bill in 1996 to get welfare mothers into the workforce. You can probably do some research on it if you like..no, no, don't get up...you could probably google it. I was merely pointing out that Australia and the UK hadn't adopted this policy. Something the OP may not have known. Remember the OP and the topic? Please quote the text in my post that says "ALL" single mothers watch Oprah all day. If you for one minute, think your fooling anybody by pretending this isn't an unfortunate social trend then goodluck to you, your "argument" is totally lost on me and plenty others let me tell you.
Sierra, I think that the fact that you worked your arse off to raise your daughter is really commendable and it's a shame there's people out there that think the world owes them a living. I'm also glad you know what recycled water is and I'm sure your balls are bigger than mine...but just leave me alone ok. I'm not really interested in you, your life or your daughter for that matter.

I find the truth hurts guys and if you feel guilty about sitting on your arse watching Oprah then I guess that's a truth you'll have to live with. Personally I wouldn't give someone that lazy the steam off my piss to warm their soup. But I give alot more than that actually.
I know plenty ...plenty of single mothers and nearly ALL of them have some form of income other than welfare. It should be obvious that these are not the people I'm referring to. But I guess some things have to be S P E L T O U T for others. Sorry for highlighting it for you.

get em girls!!!!! Perhaps you are only kidding, but I don't see the need for a lynch mob whenever this sort of topic is so much as mentioned. Leathery didn't say "all" as was subsequently indicated. Looking at the exact wording he used in the post in question, I agree with what he said. And I know some hardworking single parents who would too.
As for the difference between American and Australian women, I've never been to the US so my only experience has been with Americans I met while travelling and the handful of Americans I lived with in London. To me, they seemed the same general mix of personalities as you see amongst Australian women.

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 3:08:49 PM | If anyones interested check out this link, there are some Aust govt statistics re the no of single parents in our population, their average age, as well as details of how many of them work & whether it's full or part time, etc. http://www.aifs.gov.au/institute/info/trends.html
I stand by what I said, I'm sick of people bagging out those in our community who are already doing it tough, & raising kids alone is tough. Why make negative statements about single parents on a site where there are bound be be quite a few?

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 3:27:57 PM | ^^^Oh please...let me put this simply so you don't have to get all emotionally charged and defensive about my comment.
Single Parents who work--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Good
Single Parents with school aged children who make no attempt to work or study-----------Bad

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 3:41:06 PM | ^^Be my guest. Your weblink (with 7 year old data), if you cared to read it, expressed concern for families with parents without an income and the material well being of their children and their future.
In closing, I'd like to say that my comments above were my opinion. There were no generalisations made about anybody. As a single guy and as a taxpayer, I personally don't want to know any able bodied people who have no problem accepting welfare, without making any attempt at making their own and their children's lives a little better.

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 3:58:20 PM | | I did read it, there are also some interesting statistics there about families & the aus work force if you follow the links. I'm sure the vast majority of single parents don't enjoy living below the poverty line. If there are times they aren't working or studying during the period they raise their child or children alone there may be very good reasons why. Some of them that spring to mind such as severe illness mean that these people are already in a pretty fragile space to begin with. Considering how many marriages end in divorce & that over 80% of sole parents are women; I think of all the single parents I've known over the years & only 2 spring to mind who were happy with their lot on welfare & didn't want to improve themselves or their position in any way. | |

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 4:03:57 PM | well, let's see LM
I've been a single mom, a welfare chick, a hippie girl, a back to the lander, a corporate executive, a wife, a newspaper reporter, and now administer a non profit association. I've raised two sons and a grandson...my sons have turned out to be self sufficient members of society. grandson is still a kid.
not sure how this compares me as an americun to aussie women, but I'd say the biggest diff between us is about 10,000 miles.

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 4:40:07 PM | A mother is a mother regardless of their nationality....culture......race or socio economic background............
And in all of the above you'll find An excellent mother, a good mother or bad mother or mother that shouldn't be a mother..........well not fit to be a mother. ......we blame the unfit ones and we despise them...I do anyway BUT have I ever got to know why they are who they are??? No...Unfortunately I have just been judgemental before getting to know their facts.
But what about the fathers ..........why aren't they part the equation of our judging
But what confuses me so much is.................how did the Original Post..that is talking about family values got into this mess.
My answer to the original post is...................unfortunately overall...worldwide family values aren't as strong as they used to be.....I suppose increase number of separation and divorces is a good indication of that....

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 7:22:10 PM | Well, both groups are part of the human race, so there are similarities. I think there is an overall difference in attitude between Australians and Americans, both men and women. IMHO Australian people are way more willing to enjoy each other, are friendly, able to laugh at themselves and at others (they have a wickedly wonderful sense of humour). Americans, in general, are uptight, unfriendly, and do not appreciate dry humour. They are paranoid and stressed out, overmedicated, and afraid to go outside and work in the garden!
Obviously there are exceptions and I'm not saying everyone in Aus rocks and everyone in the US sucks. I've been living away, in the USA, for about 3 years. When I went back to Aus on holiday, as soon as the plane landed in Melbourne, I felt like I had come home! People were smiling, friendly, and not all sour like they are here.
So I guess I didn't answer the question about the women difference. From what I've observed American women are total ballbusters! The men follow their loud-mouthed ****y wives around in a state of depressed submission.
In Australia, the women are more upbeat and happy, and so are the men. :) BTW I'm an Aus citizen but was born and raised in So Cal. Lived 10 years in Aus and I'm hanging out for the second half of 2009 when I'll be able to move back.
EDIT: Australians are usually up for a good debate too! ;)

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/1/2008 10:29:19 PM | | I have just spent 20 minutes reading this forum... my head is spinning but anyways here's my two cents worth... i am an Australian born with Italian parents ..who bought me up to work hard and not expect anything for free..i am a single mum and work hard and am fortunate to have a grouse well paying job.. I love being an aussie woman..very proud of it..also very proud of and grateful to my ancestors for travelling to an unknown country which they thought was covered in aborogines and kangaroos, over fifty years ago with nothing but a view of a better life. I love this place i could stand on a friggin rock and sing it to the world! Last year oops ..new year,.. i mean the year before i travelled to Italy for the first time, went on tour with a bus load of Americans, who my sister and i fell in love with ..they were great! we all had a ball.. we had the whole bus chanting Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi! Anway in answer to "is there a difference between American and Aussie women?"...i'd say... yeah Aussie women probaby love vegemite on toast more!! haha ... Lighten up people ...we are all gorgeous! Happy New Year!!! xx | |

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/3/2008 10:43:44 AM | Whew! I'm so glad I have some really good Aussie friends who don't compare me to other women, Aussie or American or whatever. They just accept me for me and for that I'm happy and grateful.
Not sure why everything needs to be an "either/or."
as popeye says, I yam what I yam. And if that's goodenuf for ya, cool. If not, well, that's your problem not mine.
I will be there in a few months and have enuf friends to party my way across your awesome country. I'll be starting in toowoomba and then heading towards sydney. And I hope the ones who meet me will say, yer, she's just like she is on the forums....

and no, I dont have a closet full of shoes and handbags even if they are cheaper over here... I'd rather buy shoes for my horses, LOL...
and as for nooners???? YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

| Is there a difference between American and Australian Women Posted: 1/4/2008 4:56:36 AM | I have no idea if Australian women are better actresses, or able to out compete their American counterparts in sporting events, and being as I have never had an American lady friend, I am not able to answer this question.
However, it would be nice to know if they are more loving, family oriented and loyal.
