I frequently use garlic and herb, it is mixed in a big container. I buy it at our local Sam's Club......................I use it on almost everything I cook.

I'm amazed that so many people use garlic powder. Surely fresh garlic can be bought in most places? Garlic powder is about as close to the real thing as instant coffee is to fresh ground. I would opt for cumin, cinammon bark, cloves, cardammon seed and chilli (but only for when I can't get fresh). Salt is a given of course, but that's a mineral, not a spice.
Msg 56, I prefer the cumin seeds to the powder. I get these at a rock bottom price from an Asian shop near work - a fraction of the supermarket price. Lovely sprinkled on meat when fried or added to soups, stews and curries.

Technically spices are seeds and herbs are leaves. Since you seem to mean anything found in the spice section of the local grocery store -- these are spices/herbs I could not cook without. I am not counting salt as it is neither nor garlic and onions as they are actually better fresh and are aromatics like celery and bell peppers.

thyme
basil
oregano
cinnamon
cumin

I would sorely miss

cloves
fennel
caraway
turmeric
bay leaves

Message 16...reposting it for all you "nitpickers" out there.

Okay............seems we have a little problem here, things are getting a little spicy.
To me......if it is in a little jar and in my spice rack, I consider it a spice. Now to be politically correct here and not confuse spices with herbs or even with veggies............let me reword my original question.

If you could only have five different "things" to flavor your food with, what would they be?

A lot of "spices" have been mentioned that I have never used before. I guess I should start experimenting.

Thanks for the posts.
