If your spirit needs to be released by useing a Bottle or massive amounts of drugs then that spirit isn't truly free.
As others have said. a true free spirit is someone who listens to their own song. Has convictions and strives to stay true who they are. It isn't easy in a world that demands conformity. But the life you gain is rich and full, filled with rewords.

WildGreenWitch, a "free spirit" was a term women often used in the 70s and 80s to mean that they liked to have fun, and just move from man to man. It was women's excuse why they used to play the field. Don't blame men for copying the definition. It annoyed us men when we heard it and didn't understand what it meant. Now you're experiencing the same thing.

In future, stick to non-creative lines, and when guys get creative, ask them what they mean. Leads to less confusion.

A free spirit in my mind is someone that lives life by their own rules without regard for the labels society would place on them. Someone that has a free spirit has an awesome energy.

Your free spirited guy probably falls in to the same bin with all the self proclaimed gentlemen and nice guys living in this pond.

Well, call me a nutbar, but I didnt realize that online "free-spirit" refers to someone who is sexually promiscuous. Wow...maybe I did the right thing removing that from my profile...lol.

Wait, free spirit. OP either you dished someone or someone dished you, so you just had to justify some concept of free spirit with this diatribe about Free Spirit. It hurts? Right? Talk about that, don't mask into some bu!!sh!t about free spirit.

Sounds to me you already know what a free spirit is...

Well my idea of a free spirit is like some here have described.
Like me someone who will go climb a mountain just at random so i can see the wonderful view on the other side
Yes ill swim naked in a lake on the moors under the starlit sky
I like to work freelance or go temping rather than be tied to one job where i get bored easily.
I love moving to new locations, getting to know new people and places of interest. I easily get bored though and like to move on again.
I love art, dabble in it myself, mostly contemporary stuff.
Im into alternative health and therapies.
I have my own sense of style/clothing, dont go with the trends, no one tells me what to wear.
My friends think im a little bit loopy and away with the fairies sometimes
I love doing things at random, getting on a train to a place iv never been before just for the hell of it to find out whats there, have some free time, take a weekend away that iv never seen before, go abroad and not speak a word of the language, get myself lost and have to find my way back using a phrase book.
I like to think of myself as a bit of a free spirit, im single, i flirt a bit, i feel young (im 40) im energetic but id never let people down, purposly hurt someones feelings, though im honest i am tactful. Yes i guess im a bit of a hippy but i dont see this as an excuse to shit on my friends who go out of their way to do things special for me.

I consider myself much the same, call it being a free spirit if you will, although I didn't put that in my profile as such. I just figured anyone who took the time to know me would figure that out, but one statement pretty much summed me up to a "T"...

...they are
the artists, poets, and creative thinkers around us. They are
the ones who might be deemed "eccentric" by the uptight
conformist clones. But, in my experience, a free spirited person
would never intentionally harm anyone physically or emotionally,
And, the free spirited person would be distraught, if they ever
accidentally harmed anyone in any way.

...as did the following, which also describes myself and both my children...

the classic example of a "free spirit". He's artistic, imaginative, funny, physically beautifuly and yes, sometimes what people might call eccentric. And, every time I see him, I feel like I'm getting a present...just because. His thought processes are unconventional, to say the least; but what he DOES believe and think is very real to him, and he embraces it fully. He OWNS his personality, and doesn't just project it.
People assign negative labels to free spirits because they can't pin down who they are. That's because people like my son are EVERYTHING. They don't necessarily have what we call characteristics...they have essences. They don't DO...they CREATE. They don't learn the lessons, they teach them. And that part of it can be hard for the people who love them, because subconsciously, we all want to assign "duties" to other people that will make US feel more comfortable and loved. You'll never witness a free spirit become jealous, competitive, petty or fearful. They don't buy into that because they REALLY don't need validation from other people...and thus, don't understand why we DO.
having a free spirited child is an amazing experience. It was a bit "difficult" when he was growing up because he never fit any conventional mold that the child development books talked about...
just always ahead of his time...an "old soul". I have been blessed with a truly "gifted" child who has the ability to see beyond what's in front of him...to what's INSIDE him. I can say with all confidence that I've learned far more from him than I've taught him...kinda like he's been able to tap into some sort of "intrinsic" knowledge.

There were so many other really good descriptions listed here by others, but they are all basically summed up here...a free soul is just that...someone not bound by the thoughts, feelings, dreams or wishes of others, but very sensitive to them and accepting of them still.

To me its someone who likes fun, likes to enjoy life to the full, take chances, be a little bit rebelious and enjoy challenges and new experiences, not be tied down totally and a bit flirty.

Unfortunately, I am really attracted to free-spirited women. Boy, have I ever had to deal with some heartache because of it.

Your description is accurate. The only addition I've found is that the flirtiness carries over to being free to sleep with any guy who strikes their fancy. Trust is a bit difficult with the free-spirited women I've met.

Good thread...
Christopher McCandless was truly a "free spirit" in that he believed we must live our lives according to what we believe that is...he was not concerned for what others thought of how he lived...he was more concerned for what he thought of himself about how he lived. His story has been immortalized in the movie directed by Sean Penn,"Into the Wild".
The moral of the story is that we should not become too comfortable with our lives if we truly want to 'live'.

A free spirit does not follow the trends in clothing or fads and often takes a different path mentally or spiritually. Instead of being a part of the puddle they are an individual raindrop.

Being a free spirit doesn't mean you are a flake although some perhaps are. I think it means you can be very down to earth and dare not to talk about the politics or celebs or be driven by the acquisition of stuff.

Its easy to flow down the path with the rest of the raindrops instead of landing in a flower petal and inhaling.

I'm sure that sounded flaky.

in my experience, people who define themselves as free spirited often just have an inflated self image. It may be true that the "free spirits" really do whatever they want... but when they make a point to call themselves free spirited, I take that as a warning as some kind of instability. Just like I take it as a warning when someone says they aren't afraid to "tell it like it is".... because often times that just means the person is rude and confrontational.

I think it mean's someone that doesn't want any " commitment's " and sometime's hurt the one that they love ? : They feel like doing anything and everything they want { Don't really care how you feel about it } : If you get jealous over it , they do it more : I had a boyfriend like that , that's how I know : But I really don't think these so called free spirited people are really happy ? { That's why they keep bouncing to relationship to relationship } :

I cannot believe what I'm reading. If I took all this seriously, I'd go around calling myself a "free spirit".

I dress how I like (I've NEVER followed fashion). I listened to everything from Bix Beiderbecke to Bronski Beat to Rhianna (I'd LOVE to know if anyone even knows who those 3 are). I have my own opinions on just about everything (just check the forums, if you don't believe me). I just go wandering sometimes to explore. I've read books and talked to people and tried loads of religions, philosophies, alternative medicines, alternative science. I have climbed mountains just to see what they looked like from the top, or what it looked like on the other side. No-one has EVER been able to completely pin me down. I seem predictable, and then one day, I just do something completely different. I hardly ever do the same thing twice the same way. I'm always looking at things from a new angle.

At best, I've been called extremely eccentric. Most of the time, I just get called weird. Free spirit would be a step up.

Based on what I have read here, "free spirit" is a term that has a largely negative connotation. That really surprises me. I have always thought of it as a positive thing.

free spirit means free thinker, free doer, free being. They do not conform to society's norm, think outside the box, can be eccentric. You would recognize a free spirit, they carry certain charizma (IMO), often beautiful, but not in Hollywood term, unique in their appearance (IMO). Free thinkers. They are free, because they are not chained by rules in society, they can be challenging and at the same time misunderstood as aloof or selfish. You won't find them in certain professions like bankers, lawayers or engineers, accountants, but rather they are artists, thinkers (philosophers), musicians, writers, ...often feel ostracized by the society, unable to fit in. An average person can feel threatened by free spirit, and also fascinated by them at the same time. In my mind free spirit also implies certain life style. Plato's 'Cave' describes society's attitude, servitude ... call to examine the state of osociety, he (Plato) for egxample, is a free spirit, the thinker, he questions what has already been established as norm in a society, examines people's beliefs...Majority Doctors (traditional medicine) would not be described as free spirits, as they are chained by science, but I see Einstein (a scientist) is a free thinkier, a free spirit.

A free spirit can be so many things. I used to think i knew what it meant, but now it can be interpeted so many ways.... reguardless the meaning, it usually comes down to this :

Just because it's in a profile, doesn't mean it's who the person
really is. It could be who they wish they are, or who they want to be
seen as to create a false illusion

thats my conclusion nowadays. most ppl i've met who say they are 'free spirits' say it either cause they like how it sounds when it rolls off their tongue or they say it out of confusion of themselves and who they really are vesus how they want others to see them as.

it's profile 'filler' / fluff

Free spirits? Where are they serving them?
I see living people!

Seriously, a free spirit is a free thinker or a free doer? Spirit, Mind and Physique?
What does that imply re sexual behaviour? Are free spirit more liberal sexually, and is that in practice or in spirit (or theory or ideology)? Are free spirits compatible with other free spirits or people without a spirit of their own? Seriously!

Do they brainstorm more than others? Or do they storm your life?

PS. Were hippies "free spirits"? Ex-hippies?
