Utah's Escalante Canyon system. I was just in Zion NP....amazing place with some scary hikes! The Grand Staircase will be on next years trip, along with Brice Canyon and much, much more.
Telescope Peak in Death Valley is a great hike.....camp at 8100 ft....hike to 11,033 ft....in one direction you can see the lowest point in the U.S., make a 180 degree turn, and see the highest point in the lower 48....and...needless to say...a whole lot more!

| World's Most Beautiful Hikes Posted: 12/17/2007 5:50:51 PM | I agree with a previous poster, New Zealand has the best hiking network in the world. The trails have well maintained huts every 4 or so hours walking distance which saves carrying the weight of camping equipment. My fave hike there was an 8 day loop in the mountains of Nelson Lakes Nat Park...spectacular scenery and hardly another soul around.
For a one day hike, the climb up to The Amphitheatre in the Drakensburgs of South Africa has been one of my most memorable.

The trees grow so big (too wet for forest fires!) that a couple of them have their own parking lots. All the sword ferns and such, and the sweet, mossy dampness of the place can make you think a dinosaur will come crashing through at any moment. It's a joy for novice daytripper and expeditioner alike.
And Ruby Beach is on the way!
Cheers!

| World's Most Beautiful Hikes Posted: 7/3/2008 2:58:12 AM | it's funny that skudger should mention elfin lakes - there's a pic of that hike on my profile! actually anything in and around squamish or whistler is a breathtaking hike and you can make it as long or as short as you want. usually to get to those summitous glacial lakes require an overnighter though.
if you live in the lower mainland (vancouver) british columbia, there's a huge hiking group called wanderung that lists their own experiences with diff trails/conditions, organizes hikes (its members do all the work so no fees, etc.) and also helps organize trail maintenance. they also evaluate guide books and the accuracy of the hikes listed (or not listed).

| World's Most Beautiful Hikes Posted: 7/5/2008 1:39:01 PM | | Landmannalaugar to Porsmork in southern Iceland. 4 days of the most diverse and jaw-dropping scenery. Lava fields, fumaroles, hot springs, ash deserts, glacial rivers to ford, a glistening mountain top covered in obsidian, a gorge, a dwarf birch 'forest' [a rarity in a country with few trees], all surrounded glaciers, lakes and rhyolite mountains painted with a mix of gold, brown and rusty orange. | |

If you're after something hard going and rough, try Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea.

Start out at the bottom of the canyon and end up 1200 feet above the canyon. Only a 3 hour hike round trip though.
But there are other hikes at the park you can do.
BTW my profile has a pic from near the top of Angels Landing so you can get a sense of the view, just amazing.

| World's Most Beautiful Hikes Posted: 7/17/2008 7:54:17 AM | The Bruce Trail in Ontario is fantastic. It goes from Niagara Falls to Tobemory on the Bruce Peninsula. It's a long trail, but it runs through beautiful, lush conservation areas with forest, freshwater creeks, birch, poplars, maple, pine, spruce, orchids, trilliums, iris, waterlilies birds, deer, butterflies, chipmunks.it runs along the Niagara Escarpment part of the world Biosphere and through the boreal forest. It's a great network of conservation areas.
Ontario has lots of beautiful conservation areas, just check out conservation-ontario.on.ca, Pelee and Rondeau are beautiful in the south with nice marshes, and waterlillies, beaches, and boardwalks. The Georgian Bay shoreline is always really beautiful, Killbear offers a preview of the Canadian Shield. The Sheffield Conservation area is beautiful, and Lake Superior Provincial Park offers amazing vistas. Frontenac is also a really beautiful area.
