Hello,

Why not make scented soaps, sachets, ,and scented candles? You could
also make like a mini scrapbook with all the trimmings and handmade paper...that would make it very personal...especially at the holidays we're all eating so much the last thing you want in a way is more food. When I am given food, I usually dononate it to a nearby shelter because I know they appreciate it and I don't need any temptations. Also a nice gift is a photo of s ome special occasion youshared with the recipent and make a nice handmade frame.

I like to make a basket I call "junk food junkie". I buy single serving packages of all different snacks. Everything from chips to marshmallows, microwave popcorn, candy, nuts, and fun fruits. I add one or two home made goodies. Some beverage mixes like special tea bags, gourmet hot cocoa or anything that would be good with the snacks. Sometimes I add movie rental coupons. You can go upscale or supermarket items. This is a big hit with anyone from 2 to 82.

I do give food for Xmas. Year before last it was Lasagna and Garlic bread, last year Moussaka and stuffed grape leaves. This year I am planning to give a basket of sausage (a local Lutheran church sells home made German sausage every year . . . and it is, with out exception, the best I've ever eaten) , saurkraut and brown bread.

I don't have many to give to -- 5 families. It is more practicle than giving something they may not like or be able to use and it gives them one night off from cooking without having to dress for going out.

Those family and friends who live in other states/towns get a gift certificate for Wal Mart (because they sell everything from electronics to tires).

For next Christmas, I might make up several of the home made liqueuers in fancy bottles and the flatbread from another thread. Maybe some of the homemade truffles, too! I wouldn't have time to do it for this year.

One of my favorite food basket gifts is Sand Art Brownies. They're really pretty and they turn out good.

Kixxie....can you elaborate on the sand art brownies? Is that something you make or a company that sells them? When I hear sand art I pictures those bottles you fill in different layers with muti-colored sand.

Another "themed" basket idea is the Movie Night basket, with popcorn, candy, etc..all the typical stuff you find at the concession stand.

You can do a chocolate lover's basket, with Ghiradelli, Godiva, etc. It'd be cool to also combine that with coffee's, or cocoa, and a couple oversized mugs.

I also make music, reading, gardening, and pasta baskets...a lil bit of everything. I used to make natural bath products and would compile those into baskets with soaking salts, milk bath, soaps, loofah, natural sponge, a nylon poof, and a candle. Those were very popular, as well as my kitchen basket, which included my kitchen bar (soap) a kitchen towel set, a kitchen candle, and salt scrub, another product for hand washing.

Happy Holidays!

For casual gifts.. ie. co-workers..etc. ....a special coffee mug, perhaps from th Disney store if they are fans,( or whatever suits then individually), several individual ground coffee varieties, some chocolate covered coffee beans, a chocolate dipped spoon or 2, flavored to match the coffee..and a small packet of home-made cookies or candies. It all fits nicely in the mug and cellophane wrap with ribbons makes it very festive.

If they are close friends they get a basket with expanded ingredients....a pair of mugs, extra coffees, flavoured non-dairy whiteners, baked goods and chocolates or candies. For the tea lovers, I simply switch it up with tea samples instead, hot, cold flavoured, herbal, healing, etc.

Another idea that I have used, for a " first supper in your new apartment/house" type of gift, is a package of disposable deep soup bowls, with spoons and a container of home-made chili, with cheese bread. As long as the microwave is unpacked, they are good to go. A small pan of brownies and a thermos of coffee...no dishes to wash . It has always been well received...

My nephew has 4 little girls and last year I made them a baking box.. aprons, measuring cups and spoons, mixing spoons, mixing bowls, cookie sheets and several packages of boxed cookie mixes. Canned frostings and sprinkles too. They were so excited. Mommy was also thrilled, as they love to help bake and this gave them their own "stuff".
Edit.. so much more "grown-up" than the the Easy-Bake Oven supplies...

Last year I went down to the Dollar Store and purchased some gallon plastic containers for beverages. Inserted a plastic bag with fresh homemade caramel corn. When the corn was gone they had a handy container for the kitchen.

Also this time of year I'll build a fruit basket. The citrus is in season right now so I'll purchase different colored apples and put them in a basket with fresh oranges, grapefruit and lemons off my trees. Then wrap with colored saran w rap. Absolutely beautiful this time of year and a welcome snack alternative when all we seem to have sitting out are cookies and sweets!

The breads are a good choice. I bake nut bread, a family Christmas bread, it's a spice bread loaded with nuts and raisins. I add to the basket many items, different cheeses, my favorite is Cabot brand from Vermont. Home made apricot jam and strawberry jam. If they love making big breakfasts, I put bagels, gift cards for dunkin donuts and a pound of dunkins coffee. My favorite pancake mix with Vermont maple syrup. The Vermont items are included because my sister lives across the road from Cabot Farms and makes her own maple syrup. I also add a cd that I burn with music I know that person likes. I love this type of gift because it's not expensive and easier to put together.

I lost my faith for awhile, but I think more because of excess than anything else. This type of gift giving is something I can do.

I am in the process of doing up Christmas baskets for my 3 sisters. I started this years ago and now can't get away from doing them each year! I put in homemade dishcloths, (knitted), homemade preserves, a nice bottle of wine, chocolates, perhaps a good cookbook. Anything and everything. No two are ever the same. The girls simply love them! I get the baskets from everywhere. Garage sales, on sale in the stores. Stock them all year. Then at the dollar store, they sell the basket cellophane bags. Makes doing it up really easy peasy!

Sand Art Brownies is made up of the dry ingredients that you put into brownies. You layer each ingredient by color and it all goes into mason jars with a a decorative lid. They're real and you can empty the jar, mix the ingredients from the jar with the liquid ingredients that you list on the tag and bake them up. They're actually pretty good. I'll dig up my recipe today and post it.

I am actually making some this weekend. I am making miniature banana nut bread and pumkin bread loaves. Miniature cheesecakes. Cookies of several varieties, spicy pecans, my own bbq sauce and meat marinade in mason jars. Also jars of hot chocolate mix. Depending on the person, a gift or two that is non-edible (specific to the recipient)

My divorce has been pretty nasty both emotionally and financially, so last year my one sister made a basket with snacks and spaghetti sauce, pasta, dried soups, and other stuff. I loved it! My son attacked the Tastycakes first, but that fed us for a couple of weeks, now I use the basket for my dog's toys. I like baskets, and could also use them for yarn. Sure get more use out of that gift than the candle my brother and his family gave me. (Go figure, they're the ones with the money)
