Oh, way back in the farmer and lumberjack days; they never missed a drop.
We still had to wash dishes, just the same ;-).

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/23/2007 1:51:14 PM | Hi Tony,
Having a very strong Italian upbringing this is something my grandparents showed me and which my Mum learnt from them and I too from all of them.
I reckon it goes back to the days when we all ate with our fingers, that is why so many of us enjoy finger buffets.
I guess you either love eating with your fingers or you don't.
If you don't then things like carpet picnics would not be for you and they are so much fun
So Tony just be yourself on a date.
If a woman has a problem with it then I guess there would be alot of other issues they would have a problem with also and they would be alot more serious then the odd bread roll being broken and used to soak up the yummy bits of sauce left on a plate.

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 5:59:10 AM | Actually, if you guys were to take an ettiquette class, you would find that cleaning your plate with your bread is why there is bread served in the first place. I personally find nothing wrong with it as I do it myself. Also, its much better than my younger brother's rendition of it, which involves using his tongue instead of the bread. . All joking aside, I tend to be considerate of the people doing dishes in the back and like to leave an easy to clean plate for them. I used to do dishes for a restaurant and hated having to scape off gravey or coleslaw... *Shudders* its really gross and I loved it when people left a cleaner plate. | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 7:56:13 AM | | I might clean the plate off with bread if I were at home..alone..with nobody else around. In public though. Especially in a nice restaurant. Especially especially with a new date. No way! If we agreed we were going out for wings and beer then the standards may be a bit lower, but even then I try to be on my best behavior when on a new date. | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 9:17:29 AM | No, there is nothing wrong with eating/using your bread in that manner. As I have come to understand proper table manners in latter years, most Americans (myself included) hold and use their utensils improperly. I figure if anyone is going to freak out over any of my manners/mannerisms then they're too freaking uptight for me. | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 9:24:44 AM | Awww...Tony -- I feel for ya. My family is also Italian and I'm no stranger to what you described. And the women do it too. I don't find it disgusting. Some people just have nothing better to complain about. And I don't think it's something that's necessarily confined to one ethnic group.
I say sop on, my ginny, WOP, dago friend

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 9:53:58 AM | Heck I do it, was the way I was brought up and Mom was a great cook.... However I have traveled enough and been exposed to enough different cultures, to learn when in Rome... For example with some cultures you always leave some food on your plate, to show you have had enough to eat....

Were you at a five star restaurant in tux and evening gown, perhaps? Did you embarrass her in front of all the other uppercrust patrons in the establishment??
I, like many other posters here, grew up with hardworking men in the family. They ate heartily, and cleaned their plate with bread. It is only in the days of plenty when anything on a plate is wasted...there are few of us who have ever wondered where the next meal was coming from.
We've become such snobs. *chuckling* Dev

seriously, what the hell is the bread there for if not to clean off the remnants of sauce from a good plate of pasta?
I'm of this thought too. Why have toast with eggs, if you can't soak up the yolk?
And my other train of thought is, leave the prissy b!tch behind and find someone who's also a pig and knows how to have fun!
Manners are there so that you don't offend people. Chewing with your mouth open, no one wants to see that - Offensive. Elbows on the table, not offensive. Drinking from the carton, offensive if you share the carton. Acceptable if you live alone. Using the correct utensil in the correct hand? Not offensive. Soaking up gravy with bread...who is offended by this? Certainly not the bread, gravy or the plate. Food is meant to be eaten, and I would see it as less offensive since it's not wasting food and you're getting your money's worth.
But, some people are "stuck" on their manners. I'm a spirit of the law kind of guy, not letter of the law.

Bread? Naww sop away it's not like you are licking the plate clean or anything! All that good gravy (sauce) deserves a big hunk of garlic bread.
I once was on a date with a Doctor no less who blew his nose on the dinner napkin gag..gag...now THAT is disgusting ewwww!

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 3:45:14 PM | You guys are awesome!
So now I'm self-conscious about My eating habits! I went to California Pizza Kitchen and ordered a)some Hummus and b) a bowl of split pea and barley soup. I was totally cool with using my bread as a utensil but I *did* notice something odd about my own behavior, something that I do all the time but never noticed before. I folded a piece of bread and wiped My spoon on it!!!! I don't know if that is gross or not, but it's kinda weird.. hah hah!
Anyway, I think that I've found the source of this behavior... it was an oatmeal bowl I had as a kid. It had Mickey Mouse at the bottom and the only way I could see Mickey is if I finished my "mush". Today I have a similar bowl but instead of Mickey it just says "VANGOULA"! :D

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 3:47:38 PM | | OP, no, not at all...I do it all the time...it could be sauce, gravy, salad dressing, or simply oil with herbs...but I could happily live on fresh, warm, crusty bread and something to dip it in...and I don't know anyone who *doesn't* sop up the gravy, sauce, etc. with their bread...I'd think they were strange if they *didn't* do that. | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 4:21:42 PM | Not at all. I won't even date a guy that won't "sop'" up his sausage gravy with his biscuit.
And believe you me, I observe his plate with a keen eye when bread is involved.

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/24/2007 4:47:32 PM | I would hate to see this chicks reaction to fondue....
No not the same thing... but same concept
But anyways, the reason why they give you that breadstick is so you can soak up whatever sauce or gravy that comes with the meal. Eating the breadstick by itself just completely kills that idea.... You should have lifted the plate to where it was level with your mouth and just tipped it down so you could have slurped it off, she'd pissed herself
