In France as well as many places in Western Europe, it is actually expected - it is rude to leave anything behind on your plate. Just look to whom you're dating - I doubt it's a guy or girl thing.

Yes the accent is great here huh lol. Im originaly from california, moved to texas, then oklahoma, and now here in memphis tn. Hell i had a hard time at times understanding some people in texas, now here, oh my god. I work at a messenging service, some people their accent is so damn bad i have to ask them repeatedly what they said. Which of course pisses them off lol.

Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? .....No way Hosay! Society once again raises it's ugly head. You are entitled to enjoy your meal. I cannot believe the 'prudes' here tonight.....bet they scream when they see a spider (I catch them and place them outside), except for the red back spider's, they are a mean lot. Most true Aussie's clean their plate with bread, geez they ate bread and dripping in the old day's. If your at some fancy resturant, I guess you can 'fork' your bread, then do the soak, but finger's are better!

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/26/2007 8:13:13 AM | It's not disgusting. I will say it isn't something I would do at a fancy restaurant. I think it is fine if you do just a little bit. If you're starting to look like Jethro Bodeen soppin' up granny's possum pie, then I'd have to say it's a bad thing. It really is something not acceptable, though under any circumstances.
When at home, I wouldn't hesitate to do this and wouldn't think anything of people doing it at the table. It's kind of like when I have ribs at home versus ribs at a restaurant. At the restaurant I don't go for every morsel off the ribs. At home, well...let's just say it's a slightly different story:)

that cleaning a plate with bread was in fact, disgusting,
Oh good grief !!!
I'm nauseous now. We have bigger issues than sopping up gravy with bread on a date. The lack of manners and general overall moral decay is evident in every aspect of our society today.
I'd say if you want to get righteously indignant over an issue. Pick one less shallow. !!

I'd say with your personality it wouldn't matter what you were dunking or wiping!!!
aaww! What a nice thing to say! You're sweet!!!
I went to this Ethiopian Restaurant in Adams Morgan, Washington DC. They serve You and all of Your friends Your dinner is a large bowl. Everyone eats with their hands and dunks these peculiar pancakes into different stews and gravies. This place was definatley not "Low Class" or "Redneck" !

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/26/2007 7:45:34 PM | I don't understand the woman...the bread is food, the stuff on the plate is food...how is that disgusting? Okay, if you were cleaning HER plate off with your bread, I'd think it was rude...but I think she's just a little too nitpicky. I can't even imagine what else she would be bothered by.
in the home She grew up in, the behavior would not be tolerated! That's when I'd say "Well, you're all done growing up and we're adults, so how about you lose the uptight attitude?"

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/26/2007 7:50:51 PM | I see absolutely nothing wrong with it. But then again I come from an Italian background myself and Italians view this as being second nature. Especially when you have that delicious summer salad made with freash tomato's and cucumber from the garden and dunking fresh bread in the dressing ... you know what I mean OP? It's too yummy to let that home made dressing go to waste! I say it's ok OP but that just my 2 cents. | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/26/2007 8:03:07 PM | Forgot to mention OP ... the best is wiping the plate clean when mamma makes the delicious pasta dinner with home made tomato sauce .... sheesh I should have saved responding to this thread for tomorrow because this topic is making me hungry when it's really time to call it a night! Anyway, on that note buona notte a tutti ( good night to everyone). P.S. The redneck comment is sooooo uncalled for ... talk about being uptight and oh so prissy!!! Give me a bloody break!!!!!! | |

Be sure to use your fork instead of your hand though.
I only get repulsed by watching my partner masticate.

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/27/2007 5:25:04 AM | As someone else said, I think its a cultural or how you were raised thing. My father used bread to mop stuff up, so did my mother (and she was miss manners). I use to eat at a friends all the time, they were Sicilian, you mopped. rofl. Makes me wonder if it's cause you used the bread with your hand vs taking a piece and using a fork to do it that was the issue. | |

you clean your plate with bread ...then you might as well scratch your arse while your at it.......because you've just broached redneck territory.
In that case, I didn't know we Yankees could be rednecks ;) Frankly scratching one's arse is a bit more crude than wiping sauce off one's plate with a slice of bread. Considering that some places look at it as an insult if you *don't* do that, that it's 'manners' to push food onto one's fork *with* bread for food where a knife isn't used...which means the bread gets sopped into what's on the plate and then eaten anyway, and in medieval times not only did they use their fingers but their trenchers were made of bread...which was eaten after it soaked up all the juices of the dinner laid on it...I'd say there's more tradition for wiping than not...and regardless of where I am or who I'm with, if the stuff on the plate tastes good and there's excellent bread on the table, then they're both going to be put to delicious use ;)

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/27/2007 12:40:24 PM | Ah honey - go ahead and be yourself. We love you that way. Quite frankly, try and stop me if there's a good sauce on my plate - gimme that bread! How about that thick, juicy steak that's just oozing juice every where, and they give you a thick crispy slice of good ol Texas toast? WTH do ya think that's there for? Go for it - if you didn't, I'd think there was something wrong with you. ---- But in a restaurant, try a LITTLE tact - don't lick the plate, and don't make a 'sucking' sound when you lick your fingers. | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/28/2007 4:02:35 AM | My Nonno Giovanni said if you're eating 'out' simply break off a small piece of bread and push it around with your fork with the soft side down, to get the very last goodies . | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/28/2007 2:24:10 PM | I don't know how to feel about this.........
Because on weekends, im all about the beer drinking, cooking out, burping out loud, eating bbq with my hands with all my buddies! Half the time I forget to eat, because ive drinkin so much.
But if we were sober and out on a date and you did this I would be embarrassed, and I couldn't help but stare at you, and wonder why in the hell you were doing that.
Very Weird! | |

| Is cleaning my plate with my bread disgusting? Posted: 9/28/2007 4:11:21 PM | If he's that appreciative of just gravy.... my mind boggles....
If you use a knife and fork to push the bread around soaking up the gravy - is that against the charm school manners?
I think your lady friend is too petty and sweating the small stuff, but saying that I'd have to look away at the jam and peanut butter thing getting cosy on the same slice of toast! I think all of us would have to have some small hang up - thing is - are we going to let it rule our life?
