There is nothing wrong with it. In my humble opinion, that is why God created bread. I do it sometimes myself if the sauce, soup, etc. is fabulous. As long as you are not a Neanderthal at the table, I don't see a problem. It is just another way of enjoying your food.

Am I the only person in the world who is not Italian?

Well, yes. You are at least one of the few who are not Italian with wit.
Perhaps your Grandmother had an Italian Milk Man ?

I've seen people use bread to dip into a sauce or gravy but not really clean up trace amounts of sauce or gravy from a plate. It is really such a small thing but if it turned her stomach the wrong way, then she cannot help it. I do not like the smell of ketchup so I do not use it often. I dated someone who used a ton of it on their food and finally, I had to leave the room when they ate because the smell made me sick to my stomach and so did seeing all that ketchup all over their plate. If something turns our stomach, it just does.

I went to charm school and if we would have used bread to wipe across our plates to get the food left on our dish, we would have gotten into trouble. Not saying if it is right or wrong. We also were told to leave some food on our plate to show that it was good.

Agreed. And that stomach-turning thing for me is ketchup as well. I have no idea why, but I can't stand the smell of it. I've been that way since childhood.
If something turns our stomach, it just does.
And, OP - the bread thing wouldn't bother me unless we were in a fancier restaurant. I'm a fan of table manners, but not a stickler by any means.

Thats great for you Carrie but in the Italian culture leaving food on the plate is not exactly a statement that the food is good but somewhat of an insult.

I don't think it would bother me...what does bother me is a man who picks at his food and can't enjoy it.

Yes, My Dear... I am Italian! LOL! And You called it "Gravy".... You're just a girl after My own heart!

hey, piasono, if you're hanging out with the italians then you learn that it's not called sauce, it's called gravy. even though the stuff that you buy in the stores is called sauce, different countries, different nationalities say things differently. i just wished i knew how to make the gravy from scratch, put it over my pasta and have a nice glass of dago red to wash it down.

oh and ummm, when my neighbor had dinner here over a month ago i asked him "how much gravy would you like over your pasta?"...he looked at me as if i was nuts and going to put some kind of gravy over it like beef or chicken.

That is not true countygrl....Depends what part you are from. Growing up my parents called it gravy and I married my ex and his family was from Italy born there and everyone called it sauce we use to tease about it all the time. So i guess its just where you come from. Now i am calling it sauce!..Gravy is brown..At least that is how they explain it!....

Slopping your plate with your bread to get every bit of goodness should be used with discretion in public.

Depending on what part of the country you are in might be another factor. The type of dining cuisine and ambiance would be another.

As has been pointed out. Customs are different depending where your heritage lies.

My mother, being of Parisian descent was scolded when she first came into this country. It is an American custom to clean the plate. The cleaner the plate, the bigger the compliment to the cook in this country. In France -- at least back when she lived there -- it was the custom to leave something on the plate. In France it was bad table manners to clean the plate. Considered vulgar.

By using bread to clean your plate is an old American custom.

I embrace both the American and European customs. I eat with fork and knife in each hand european style and -- with discretion -- have been known to use bread as a tool to get every bit of goodness off the plate.

It's "Gravy" to *most* Italian-Americans, not "Sauce" if it's red and made out of tomatoes. Immigrants translated the Italian "Sauce" (sugo) into American "Gravy".

This is more common in the older neighborhoods that still have their roots, especially on the East Coast centered on Ellis Island. My Great-Grandmother called it sugo and my Grandmother called it Gravy. Go figure...

By using bread to clean your plate is an old American custom.

And a much older European custom.

Cleaning one's plate with the bread ALSO has roots with financial situations where bread was a "Filler" with a dinner. It's also a "Don't waste anything" mentality as well. There's two sides to this tradition.

The cleaning one's plate with the bread tradition as a compliment happened far later.

I'm glad to see so many paisano around, Ciao a tutti...

I call it sauce and I'm Half Sicilian. Thing is though, My Grandpa never spoke english. In fact, the only english I ever heard him speak to me was "big big John!" as he straddled me on his knee when I was but a small little thing.

I would have no problem with it. I'm in the south and live in the country. My parents were born and raised in Florida. It's something I see here at home or at my grandparents. My papa and dad always clean their plates with bread if there's bread with the meal. If I were you, I just wouldn't worry about it. You'll find yourself a woman who won't mind you cleaning your plate with bread.
