| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 10/4/2007 3:08:02 PM | Do not make fun of drummers. They usually have more than two sticks at their disposal and higher than average upper body strength. If a stick should hit you in the back of the head on stage, well you know, accidents happen...
Never go on stage overly intoxicated. A quick drink before a show is fine, but know when to draw the line.
For rock musicians, if it at ALL possible, write your parts standing up. I'm constantly amazed at how many people can't play standing up...even when it is their OWN stuff. I know its easier to play sitting down, but seriously now.
"If you mess up again, I'll go all Dethklok on you." Do not say this. It is strange, confusing and just plain odd. Be supportive of others you play with and encourage them when they're having an off day.
Know your priorities. I know music is important to a lot of people, but there are other things in life. Family, friends, work...these things are a part of us as well. I've had band members skip out on all sorts of things to just jam. It shows dedication to music, but a lack of dedication to the other things that help make us who we are.
Stretch before playing for a long period of time. Especially drummers. Keep hydrated if you get a bit warm, make sure you've got proper posture going. You need your body to play your instrument and you know, other stuff. Like living and playing Halo.
Finally, dedicate some time every day (if possible...if not, make time) to practice. It always helps; even professional players still practice.

Never insult another player over the mic if they screw up. 7. Relax your ego..you are nothing amazing. 8. Always appear to have a good time up there. 9. Players with vocals always get more gigs...period. 10. Don't listen to yourself..pay attention to the band as a whole. Get in the pocket AND STAY THERE!!!

Posted: 10/12/2007 9:08:29 PM | | Always buy good gear, never cheap out on stuff and save your money until you can buy the better equipment. Worst case scenario is that you NEED it for a gig or something, just rent as it's a lot cheaper then buying something crappy that you will regret later, this is true for guitarists like myself especially.

networking is essential, and do not buy into the hype, Labels are leery of people who look sloopy, act uneducated are obviously use drugs and alcohol to excess. Be professional.
If that were actually true, then why is it that guys like Pete Doherty are not getting kicked off their record labels for that or who would sign people like that anyway?

I feel that if you don't understand what you are playing, than you're not a true musician. It's really pathetic when I start speaking the language of music with another person that claims to be a musician, and they don't know what I'm talking about. As my friend Joe would say, they're nothing more than just a "gig-er."
so you're saying people like jimi hendrix are not musicians because they didn't know music theory?
i think what's most important is to have fun with it. people take things too seriously in this world and a lot of musicians/artists have day jobs. keep the day job serious and let the music side of you be fun. enjoy what you do, enjoy learning, enjoy just messing around and making noise. do you think keith richards or pete townshend sit there and go 'fa la la! i can play an Fmaj7' no they don't. enjoy what you do and people will enjoy listening. make music for YOURSELF not for others because in the end it's your work and no one has the right to tell you it's good or bad.

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 10/27/2007 7:55:32 AM | very important things to keep in mind when you're a musician:
- you're labeled as a hero in bed. most musicians are. keep the stereotype that way and try not to ruin it for the rest of us. if you're not up to par, do us all a favor and just masturbate like the rest of the world. get rid of that sperm. it's no good for reproduction anyhow. do not try to live up to standard just because you think you can. simply just accept that fact that you suck and go play World Of Warcraft. the skin flute is the most important tool of any man and should be considered sacred.
- you MUST have image. ever noticed how the musicians who make it are good looking in some way or another? i mean, it really does not matter if you can play a mean riff if you're ugly as sin. it wouldnt matter if Roseanne could play Piano Man better than Billy Joel. she'd still be that fat **** who married Tom Arnold.
- you must be an ***hole to some extent. musicians are gods and we should act that way. who cares what people think? you can play a sick riff. they're still working at McDonald's for 6.50 an hour. **** 'em.
- you must eat a lot of cereal. i'm talking the fiber laced shit. **** the Reese's Puffs. go straight for the Brannies. this will help you keep that mean "i'm shitting my pants while rocking the **** out" stage look while playing a gig. old musician's trick. it's not just the face. we're actually crapping ourselves in those photos.
- throw hotel parties as much as you can. even if all you do is play in a local band who performs at bars for beer money. act like you own the ****ing city and destroy every hotel you party in, just for the reputation. keep that rockstar image burnin', my friend.

Only then can you see what the big bad world looks like as far as music goes. Believe in what you do. Don;t get down when you are stuffed aside... I was given "Canadian Composer" Status by the Royal Conservatory one year, and the next year, I recieved a letter from the same commitee asking me not to enter again into the music festival, as to give others a chance. I never entered to "win" per say, I wanted gigs, because cooking for a living sucks, and I pushed hard, but there will always be politics. Don;t get upset by the little set backs...if you have something to say, say it. If you don;t have the right gear for the gig, find it. If you have a chance on a stage, use it for whatever it's worth. BE aggressive. Polish your guitar or don't//just pull off the show however you can to prove your worth.

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 1/27/2008 7:24:51 AM | the most important thing to know when your a musician is to copyright all your work.
a cheap trick i have found handy to use is. put your work into an envelope and mail it to yourself through registered/recorded post, and obviously when you recieve it back you dont open it, put it somewhere safe.
this method will give you peace of mind, save precious money for buying equipment and also saves on hiring lawyers/ solicitors and other music industry officials on copywriting your material.

| What are some important things you should know when you're a musician? Posted: 1/30/2008 7:24:00 PM | 1. Learn how to continue on after a mistake, just like you MEANT to do that, nothing stops a show faster than having to restart a song. 2. practice #1 and realize that the majority of you audience doesn't notice every single mistake or missed note. Theres a whole band playing with ya and most of the audience are not musicians. 3. Rehearse until you can all of your songs blindfolded and on acid. When it comes time to perform it'll be easier to PERFORM, not just look like you are really trying hard not to screw up. 4. Invest in some decent home recording equipment, and record often. You have no idea how many good ideas that could have been classic hits have been lost just because they didn't get laid down as some form of retrievable data. 5. ALL musicians are only as good as their attitude. If you have a really bad attitude, everyone that hates you, will hate your music. 6. most important rule of all. If you don't have fun doing it, don't do it. just my 2 cents | |
