Michigan is closed for business!

There's the problem. The governor of that state is an old woman. Standing it the way of progress. Old women are usually set in their ways. Years ago Toyota and Honda built plants and still are in Tennessee and other places near. Michigan was their first choice but the state made it impossible for Honda and Toyota with high taxes and Union demands so they came here. Other states offer incentives. Tax breaks brings businesses in. Last week ABC World news covered the short lived GM strike thoroughly and went into details of job losses in Michigan. Including job gains in the health care, retail, manufacturing and food areas. The numbers were over 355,000 in each of those job sector. The point was made that Michigan is slowing divorcing itself from the Big Three auto and new jobs in high numbers have been created. Maybe not where some of you live but those numbers covered the state and World news went only for one commercial break for that special segment.

Yes, Michigan does need to get away from auto manufacturing and is slowly building new businesses. The key word here is slowly. I keep seeing people who do not live in Michigan telling us that job growth is being created by leaps and bounds and that the situation is not so bleak. Now I have been given figures, again with no verification, of over one million new jobs spread over four sectors. I beg to differ, as does Jennifer Granholm.

From the Michigan State of the State Address 2007
02/06/2007
http://www.stateline.org/live/details/speech?contentId=180409

You know the new reality. Our auto industry – the anchor of our economy – has been battered as never before. Jobs have been outsourced by the tens of thousands to low wage countries.

Together, we created the new 21st Century Jobs Fund and in this year we sparked 67 cutting-edge companies and projects with the promise of over 3,000 new jobs.

We placed 112,000 workers in new jobs across Michigan and trained many of them for new careers.

My trips to Japan and Germany have resulted in more than $230 million worth of new investments and more than eleven hundred new Michigan jobs.

We have 84,000 job vacancies in Michigan today. Most require some kind of training or degree.

That is well below one million new jobs. Well below. It is actually 197,100 new jobs and a promise of 3,000 more. Do you not think if this woman could somehow take credit for over one million new jobs in her tenure, she would?

The State House also disagrees with all of you:

Michigan Employment
Job losses in Michigan over the past year were concentrated in the manufacturing and
retail trade sectors, although the construction industry also experienced declining
employment. Service sector growth of more than 2.6% over the past year was not
enough to offset the loss of more than 40,000 manufacturing jobs.
Michigan's
manufacturing employment losses accounted for 70% of the total nationwide decline
in manufacturing employment over the past 12 months.

http://www.house.mi.gov/hfa/PDFs/rev_1-07.pdf

There may be service sector jobs available, but they are NOT offsetting net job loss. According to the Michigan Department of Labor:

In May, the number of unemployed in Michigan was 348,000. The total number of unemployed in the state has hovered around 350,000 for about four and a half years.

· From May 2006 to May 2007, total employment in Michigan declined by 28,000 or 0.6 percent.
· Since May 2006, statewide unemployment increased by 12,000 or 3.6 percent.

Payroll job cuts were widespread throughout a number of industry sectors, but were led by decreases in construction (-6,000) and manufacturing (-6,000). Lesser declines were recorded in leisure and hospitality services (-4,000), trade, transportation and utilities (-2,000), and professional and business services (-2,000). These reductions were offset slightly by a job gain in education and health services (+2,000). The remaining major industry sectors were little changed over the month.

So 18,000 jobs were lost, while 2,000 jobs were gained. The number of unemployed people has been steady at about 350,000 for four years now.

According to our own governor, there were 84,000 job vacancies in February. I guarantee there has not been some miraculous influx of a million jobs since then. And if there were one million good jobs available, don't you think people would be flocking to Michigan? They aren't.

New population estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate that Michigan's population has been essentially unchanged at 10.1 million for the past two years.

The biggest factor holding back Michigan's population growth has been net migration out of the state, which has been increasing gradually since 1999.

Based on the Census Bureau's new estimates, Michigan lost an estimated net total of 115,000 residents through migration from April 2000 through July 2006.

As Jennifer Granholm said, those of us who live here know the new reality.

The problem is not NAFTA auto industry had free trade ageements on automotive production since the mid 60s. The state of Michagin lost the jobs because of UAW demands for wages at up to 40 dollars an hour, and then add in that American goverment did not slap tarriffs on Japanese cars that are produced back in the 1970s under production costs. I figure good idea would be to require forgien automakers that dont build cars within to pay for a tarriff to ensure jobs like assembly which are vital to maintain manfacutering capbility. South Korea uses nontarriff means to keep out foreign cars, and American, Canadain politicans better not vote yes for a trade agreement with South Korea or Japan becausee they are lot worse than the Latin America, or Europe when it comes to the term of trade.

I think that the Auto industry is struggling with both the high demands from the UAW and the high bonuses that the upper management of the Auto companies.

If you'll look around, all of the new auto plants are being built in southern IN, IL, KY and TN. The reason for this>?? The Auto Industry has learned from Detroit in what NOT to do.......they want to be a very comfortable distance from the reach of the UAW.

As the Big 3 goes....so goes Michigan.

Well you folks may want to try Ontario,

Yeah Ontario rocks !! I won't go through Detroit unless I absolutely have to. Detroit is the filthiest place on the planet and I've been to almost every state there is. If I drive to Ohio I keep the windows down and hope the pot holes don't break my truck till I hit toledo and then it's smooth sailing :) West Virginia is my favourite state though. Washington is a close second and Florida is the bomb !

we care about what the people want and what they need (just ask Daulton Mguienty(SP?)

Please oh please oh please tell me you're joking. McGuinty is the worst we've had since...Eves. Which is quite a stretch. Let's start with how he buggered the Ontario education system by reversing an action by Harris (one of his few good ones) that made the unions answerable to the school boards.

The man is all talk and no use. I hope the next provincial election we have I'll have an opportunity to vote for people I actually would like to see run the province and region I'm in.

That said, sorry to hear about Michigan; MOst of the surviving members of my dad's family live there. Out of curiosity, has the federal government made any steps to intervene?

My dad started working at fords many years ago making 2.75 A hour it has not always been a great paying job so you need to be very thankful that its up to 30plus an hour I wish I lived in the time where 2.75 a hour was enough but really what is enough the more you make the more you burn. Remember all you really need is food ,shelter and clothing and good health . He left fords and got a watch and a clock he loves that old clock and yes hes on medicade leaving him to pay for his cancer care.
So we really do need the UAW to hold onto the higher paying jobs for us or we all will be making very low wages made by the state what is it now 7.25 min wage.

I am with the OP 100%, and

What many do not know is this is the welfare-to-work deal, she took 112,000 welfare recipeints and trained them for jobs in the government. SO instead of paying them 4500 a year in welfare benefits, she spent millions training them to do jobs she made up directly on our budget. This training, cost of labor, cost of benefits, PLUS the many new Supervisors, along with requisite governmental Positions to run these new jobs is costing Michigan BILLIONS, for jobs that didnt exist, yet we got along fine before.
Granwhore. A Canadian liberal, educated at Berkeley, PLEASE find the nearest bridge, and jump.
Heres a great IDEA! Lets TAX CANADIAN GARBAGE!
Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana. Illinois, All charge $12-15 per ton of out state Garbage, yet Michigan is taking in ALL of Ontarios garbage, with its environmental hazardous waste hidden inside, and its less then $2 per ton. I say we could charge an $8 excise tax per ton of canadian trash and still be the cheapest.
Canada I dont care where you dump your trash, but this is NOT your dump!
Canada has laws against exactly what they pay us to do. I say go into your pristine wilderness, dig some holes and POLLUTE YOUR OWN DAMN LAND.
IF the International trade feild was level in all Aspects, we would have no problems competing, BUT its not. Almost every country has vastly less tax base, and face virtually none of the taxes US companies face. I say we make every county that imports here PAY EQUAL TAX, AND DUPLICATE THEIR IMPORT POLICIES TO THE LETTER.

i have a sugestion:

stop voting the same 'ol dumbo-crats back into office over and over and over and over again. haven't you guys had enough?

why don't you vote for someone who has a business background?

we have the same problems going on in crook country chicago. the dumbocrats have been running that city unchallenged since FDR. people sit and wonder why the city is soooooo corrupt. it's just laughable. that's why both parties are important. whether you are a dumbocrat or a repube-icon, both parties need eachother. who wants to live in a state, or county, or city that is controlled by one party only? what if our nation were controlled by one party only? not I! the two parties check eachother. that is what keeps the massive corruption, chicago style corruption, out of your own city or state.
if you want leaders that don't take your vote for granted, then start voting for the other guys. they'll start shaping up pretty quickly once they realize that they have to earn your vote.

just a suggestion... throw the bumbs out... and hold your nose and vote for a repube... that way you at least have a balance between the two parties....it's the only way...

C'mon now, let's at least _try_ to appear to have some connection to reality when mindlessly spreading partisan agendas.

Michigan is one of the more politically balanced states in the nation. Republican John Engler was Governor from 1991-2003 and should probably receive much of the credit for Michigan's current economic situation (it didn't "profit" as much from Clinton and early Bush years as the rest of the nation). Republicans currently hold 21 of 38 (55%) seats in the State Senate and 52 of 110 (47%) seats in the State House.

This thread was started in large part BECAUSE of the balance between the two parties in Michigan. Government services were shutting down in late 2007 because of a budget deadlock between the Republican controlled senate and the Democratic governor (and state house I believe) ... the poor economy was a factor as well.
