By the way, what do others think about your accent??
Just a thought.............

I have spoken and got to know a Californian man, I must say, his accent sounded gay
Prim, did he happen to be from around San Fransisco? I went there once and got hit on by an old homeless guy at Fishermans Warf, lol
I have an Okie accent (for those who may not know what the Okie accent is, think Garth Brooks, he's Oklahoma born and bread) mixed with a little Arkansas influence, which isn't much different from Oklahoma just with a few suttle differences. People from other parts of the country like hearing me talk for some reason.
I LOVE hearing Scottish and Irish girls talk. I'm like freakin puddy around them.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 10/3/2007 1:21:19 AM | I'm Canadian so I know the question wasn't *really* directed to me , but I love accents, most of them anyway.
I second the guy who says he loves the boston accent, somethin about that chowdah , oh boy!

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 10/3/2007 5:36:44 AM | I like the american accent, i don't have a preference on regions....but i have a soft spot for the southern drawl. I'm not English though, i'm Scottish....my opinion still counts right? lol. | |

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 10/3/2007 6:21:30 AM | Went out with a guy from Colorado for a few months and loved it when he shut up. He was a nice guy but have to say his accent was irritating to me. He used to flip over mine though, always used to get me to talk to his folks back home so they could listen to my accent (quite posh English).
Maybe it was just his voice in particular though, have worked with and known other Americans and the accent hasn't annoyed me that much although I really dislike that whiny voice some American women have.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 10/3/2007 7:22:05 AM | Everywhere I went when on my little jaunt over to England/Scotland/Ireland/Wales, people thought my friend and I were Canadian....I asked them what they thought Americans sounded like and was told "They say y'all and are loud and obnoxious"....so if I didn't fit that stereotype, then I'm glad to pass as a Canadian, eh? ;)
Cool topic, though - I've often wondered what we sound like to other people - that's weird to think that it's a sensation we'll never get to have...well, unless we move to another country for a couple of decades and then come back...
I'm in the DC area, though - and from the suburbs where accents aren't all that prevalent...so I don't typically have an accent, but I'm also highly suceptible to accent-influence....so if I'm talking to anyone from the north or another country, it goes a mix of Canadian/English....but if I'm talking to someone from the south - I'm soooooo screwed...fall right into the "y'all" drawwwwn out drawl...get me talkin like that for any amount of time and it sticks for days...have to run into a wall or something to reboot my brain.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 10/3/2007 10:59:09 AM | My ex and his family (all English) were fascinated with the way I talked.
I think they like to hear us because they like what we represent, not so much how we say Pall Mall.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 12:56:59 AM | Although there is more than one accent in Canada, many Canadians who I know have accents that are only slightly different from my accent. I'm from Southwestern Michigan/Northern Indiana originally.
There are some differences and they seem to have a tendency to sound more proper, but I don't want to generalize since I haven't met every Canadian out there.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 1:06:29 AM | Greeneyes, I love the Boston accent! Although there are different kinds I think. The JFK accent seems to be the one that many people consider to sound more "elite". Dropping the R's on certain words can sound interesting. | |

Being from Texas, where everyone speaks with a draw
If you were from Texas you'd know we have a DRAWL not a draw.
I don't know about the UK, but the girls in NYC like it.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 1:25:53 AM | Feisty,
I talked to a guy from California who lived in Australia for awhile. He said that some Australians told him that Canadian tourists get upset sometimes if they are asked, "are you from the U.S.?"
Therefore they ask, "are you from Canada" just to be on the safe side.

Do English and Australian guys & girls think the same about the American accent? I dont think much about the American accent. Its clearly distinguished from other accents in Oz (and we have a massive immigrant population)...but all the Yanks (sorry if that offends anyone...its a term of endearment)...are pretty damn LOUD, attention seeking & generally annoying.
Or do we just sound like a bunch of un-educated hicks?! Umm...yeah kinda. Well...Sh!t...Hate to say it but you guys really do.
I know us Aussies have the Croc Dundee thing to contend with as an introduction for most of the Aussie population to the USA...but its waaaaay off base on what 99.99% of Australians are like.
We however...are influxed by approx 90% American television and News/Information so we have a pretty good idea as to the diverse broad spectrum of the 300m nation. Yeah...Yanks in general...hmm...although I dont like to say this cos Ive got alot of American chat friends; you generally (as a whole) come off sounding atleast as simple as the dumbass outback hicks portrayed in the Croc Dundee movies as representative of Australians.
Kinda like teenagers...with all the pretend knowledge and experience in the world...overtly self important...no common sense ...and no humility. The butt of jokes.
Apologies to anyone Ive offended it isnt intentional...the question was asked, I answered honestly and will atleast give you insight into how others see you as a nation.

Sounds like you're mainly referring to tourists who visit Australia. Even more specifically, of the younger generation No unfortunately. Id say 30-40ish. Anyway...I was specific. We will rarely come across an american tourist.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 2:10:13 AM | I've worked with a lot of Americans and so far haven't liked the accents and it's basically down to loudness. There is something though about an American male tourist...usually middle aged...heaven help you if you are in a restaurant or a closed space and they are there at the same time. You can't hear yourself think and they all seem to bragg about this that and the other. I prefer an Aussie accent as so far those I have met have been more softly spoken.
Sorry if that upsets anyone. I don't mind accents on tv..as I have a volume control.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 2:14:59 AM | Unfortunate :(
I actually heard similar things from an Aussie just yesterday. She noticed I typed properly with capitalization and punctuation, and she figured one of my parents or both must be from another country. She was shocked because I seemed pretty knowlegeable about the world, cultures, language. As she put it I seemed pretty "cultured". She said it was surprising for her because she has a bad impression of American schools.

She said it was surprising for her because she has a bad impression of American schools. Okay I know this is a little offtopic/digressing but also in reference to my initial post which was continuity of thread.
Yeah we do have a bad impression of USA schools...AND... USA work environments. USA welfare system. Racism...etc etc etc. The inhouse fighting and ridiculous expenditure on what is unnecessary as opposed to looking after your own first...is really quite sad.
As individual people...you outshine the stereotype. But as far as America the Free...America the beautiful...America the *whatever*....its hmm... America seems great when you were born with a college fund & good looks or exceptional sporting ability...otherwise...you're life is pretty well set. *Gets on soapbox*...Australia isnt called... the Land of Opportunity for nothing.
You can be anything you want here...you can get sick & not spend your life paying for medical that should be free and not have to bloody well negotiate it when looking for a job. Your neighbors dont care what color your skin is & would be horrified if someone did...or what religion you're practising. Update your education any time you want. Get paid decent wages. You dont have to worry your damn ex wont pay Child Support because the government will hunt them down. We dont worry about guns in schools and really...who should have to? All small things...but its quality of life. Its astounding that such a rich nation...wastes soooo much money on self defence when there's so much more to fund of importance... than that.
As she put it I seemed pretty "cultured". Culture is not something USA is reknowned for. Fads...yes. Making a quick buck if you fluke something or wanna scam people...yes...but Culture and good taste...No. *disclaimer...read my previous posts*

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 3:32:52 AM | I've heard some American accents that I love and some that really grate on me, I think it tends to be the more southern states with the drawl that I don't like, not sure though. Canadian accents on the other hand...
Kind of off topic but my friend and her husband have moved out to LA, they're both English. She has said that when they're both out together women will push her out of the way or stand with their backs to her while they hit on her husband, all because of his accent. It's probably a good job that she doesn't have a violent bone in her body!

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 3:36:30 AM | Well, my mother was a single mother and I wasn't born and raised into a rich family. I'm actually going to college on loans, but as for the idea that you're pretty much stuck in whatever situation you're born in, I beg to differ.
As for education, I support vouchers. Everyone should have a right to education, and parents should have a right to decide where to send their children to school. Personally I think state-run public schools are a joke in the U.S.
Racism exists everywhere.
