| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 3:44:03 AM | | I've never been to L.A., but in alot of big cities there are classless people. In much of the midwest, southern states, and rural America, people seem very friendly, though. In L.A., New York, New England, and most big cities, however, you'll find people who have pretty cold attitudes in my opinion. | |

This is off topic but something I'm intrigued about.. The company I used to work for was worldwide and sales conferences would always go on in Tampa so all our UK salesmen would go over there once a year. Partners were welcomed on the trip too. My colleagues would return and tell us bout the trip..one thing which seemed really wierd is that they would say some of the wives of their US counterparts were really unknowledgable about different cultures around the world. Some of these people didn't seem to know that the Dollar wasn't used all over the world and that there wasn't a Wallmart in every town in every country. They had never travelled abroad and had no passports (fair enough) but it was the lack of knowledge of a world outside the US which struck my colleagues as odd.
This is only hearsay..but it seems amazing to me.

Wow, that's amazing...are you sure they weren't just trying to be silly? Then again, there are some surprisingly uninformed people out there. Not just in the U.S.
I have a friend from London, and we were talking about history. He seems to not know much about anything. History, politics, etc.
I don't have a passport either. I was planning on maybe getting one soon. We need them to get into Canada now. Many Americans don't have passports since our country is so big and we're separated from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia by vast oceans. I guess travelling from state to state for us would be like travelling from country to country in Europe.

I have a buddy that took motorcycle trip across western Europe. It sounded really cool until I realized it was like a trip across Texas miles wise.

| Do Engilsh girls swoon over American accents?! Posted: 4/4/2008 4:29:37 AM | The cold attitude is over here to an extent as well.
I can understand the not having a passport..like you say..the States is a big place!
Well..I was shocked and from the stories there were quite a few who weren't really aware of a life any different to theirs. Like I said it was hearsay but my colleagues came back so stunned by it that there must have been some truth in it. Like you say about your friend in London though..maybe it was just one or two who thought the same.

Atleast they get to move from culture to culture and country to country. Oz is like USA in that regard (we're close to the same size area-wise but with less than 10% of your population)...and you can drive for fricken ever and still be in effectively the same place. Thats assuming you dont end up dead whilst crossing the desert.

TolsmaLMC sorry to hear you have had that experience in New England. I was born and raised here, and truly you are not meeting the right people.
I live in a town of about 5,000, and while we are wary of "outsiders" since we have to put up with a lot of rude tourists who invade our town, but once you have been here you will not meet a nicer batch of people. Most would give you the shirt off your back if you needed something.
I agree with you on the point about US schools though. That is why I homeschooled for so many years (still wish I was).
Kyn- Sorry to hear that Oz has such a poor opinion of us. We really are good people, and while we have some messed up things in our country (healthcare system, education system), there is a lot to be grateful for.

Blueskies123:- Funny you should say that about your colleagues as it is a bit of a joke here how Americans dont know there is life after there coast. True story, while on holiday in America and meeting some locals who were fascinated by my accent I told where I was from and they had no idea where Australia was and then I said I was going to Canada and one said is that near Mexico hahahahaaha

For me it's got to be either Geordie or Irish. There's something about the way an Irishman says 'darlin' that just makes me go weak at the knees.

Jeeze, what a den of depravity that place was....

I've lived in the US for 18 years & the level of ignorance among Americans about the rest of the planet is absolutely staggering.

Hehe...LOVE an Irish accent. A few years back...I used to have an Irish apprentice, a Kiwi dish-hand, an English apprentice & a coupla South Africans.
Listening to the lot of em talk...was like needing fricken subtitles.
I also remember years ago, a neighbor coming to the door. My ex answered (I was in the lounge)...and could hear the conversation (my ex interjecting with the odd "Yep") and it went ... on and on and on... Finally I got up, went to the door & basically "took over" the conversation & my ex left me to it. Afterwards, I said to him...You had nfi what that guy was talking about do ya? He looked at me, cracked up laughing...and said Nup. Irish I can understand with ease...but Scottish takes a bit of work.

Maybe that's why people find accents charming.
But then again, some people don't like strangers.

Umm...yeah that makes sense. Thank goodness I pasted that before it was edited. Realized how fricken dumb it was eh?
