I actually agree that people in the States don't know as much as they should about the rest of the world. Even Canada which is just north of us...it's right there, but we never go.

simplelady66,

Sorry, I didn't mean to stereotype. There are alot of nice people here in New England. (I go to college in Vermont). I was thinking that maybe the people I perceive as "cold" aren't even really trying to be mean.

For example, in NY near Albany I was paying the toll on the Thru Way, and the employee told me the price, but I didn't quite hear him so I asked "how much did you say?" and he goes, "Just what I said, three dollars," in kind of an annoyed tone.

I'm from Massachusetts and I'm very conscious not to speak with a Boston accent.

My college president at a college on the west coast was from Boston. The way he mutilated my name was "awful." Literally. I learned quickly to stay away from the Bostonian accent. On the other hand, when we lived in Australia, my daughter got quite a bit of attention for her "accent."

there are significant cultural differences across the US even with the slow decline of regional accents brought on by national TV. The east coast tends to be less mobile and so it takes a long time to not be considered an "outsider." A west coast neighborhood practically renews itself every few years. On the west coast friendships happen far more rapidly but tend to be less deep. The midwest is somewhere in between. I remember when I went to graduate school in Indiana and then later in Iowa, I would ask for directions to the library and get a wave of the hand and an "over there." I practically fell in love when I returned to the west coast on a research trip and asked directions to the library. The couple grabbed each arm and took me to the front steps exchanging pleasantries and introductions along the way. Similar differences seemed to happen on just about every trip to the west coast but I hadn't noticed them until I had settled in to the midwest.

My ex had a British accent. Let me tell you, it gets old after about 20 years. Between being cussed out with a Liverpool cocney accent and the ash tray bouncing off my head, a couple of decades was all I could take of it.

Atleast they get to move from culture to culture and country to country.
Oz is like USA in that regard (we're close to the same size area-wise but with less than 10% of your population)...and you can drive for fricken ever and still be in effectively the same place.
Thats assuming you dont end up dead whilst crossing the desert.

I have traveled extensively in the USA. I've spent time in all but two states on the mainland and I can tell you that the difference between New York city and Atlanta is VAST. Los Angeles is like going to another planet and Memphis is a breath of fresh air.

And I'm a little offended that people would think we have nothing to offer culturally. Have you not heard of Jazz, Blues and Rock and Roll?

Obviously USA does...but difference is your definately not reknowned for it.
Not food, not music, not wine, not art, not anything really...all we ever hear about are guns, your crime rate, how everyone's in therapy...yadda yadda yadda.

Have you not heard of Jazz, Blues and Rock and Roll?

Jazz, Blues & Rock 'n' Roll...here's the thing;
USA doesnt get the glory on that...the black slaves do, the Africans.

You sound no different than Adolph did when he spoke about the Jews
Umm...yeah that makes sense.

Maybe reconsider the stupidity aspect on that?

Anywho...unfounded not. This isnt prejudice, I adore my american friends....its giving you guys an insight into how other countries generally view you (especially a country who's primary input is from the USA).
Whether you feel its true of who you are as a people is irrelevant and I already stated as individuals you are wonderful people. Annnnnd I made it fairly specific if you care to reread.
But feel free not to perpetuate the stereotype with another dumbass comment.

They werent...they were a race of people stolen from their own country/continent.
Just because I carve, paint and throw a boomerang doesnt mean I had anything to do with the creation of it.

Nothing worse than bandwagon jumpers cos we all know they rub their hands of it when the going gets tough.

They were slaves in their own country, sold and brought here. America was not the first country to have slaves and we weren't the last. It is an ugly part of our history. But, today we have a Black man running for president. We are trying to leave it behind and grow.

They were slaves in their own country, sold and brought here

Doesnt matter what they were in their own country...another "people" took advantage of that.
You think another abuser is more admirable because they put the victim in a different situation?? Or does the admiration go to a person who takes one out of a disgraceful situation...gets them back on track ...and walks away without any recognition?
Perpetuating the abuse and advocation of abuse makes the "rescuer"/"user" an abuser too.

It is an ugly part of our history.

You're absolutely right, as much as "ours" when it comes to the degradation of a race of people (altho thankgod we dont have your history cos Id be embarassed rather than attempt to take any honor in what was stolen by "me")...
Its exceptionally atrocious for a "Super power" & supposedly a nation who knows better...is smarter...is more "together" than anyone else.

But, today we have a Black man running for president. We are trying to leave it behind and grow

The fact that a "black man" is running for President...shouldnt even be an issue, its irrelevant and you dont get recognition for "doing someone a favor" when you f*cked them initially.
Now you want glory for letting the historically oppressed be finally equal?
Oh puhlease.

ha ha. He has a Texas accent. Everybody knows that we talk the best!!

And kyn, if you think that the US has failed to make a cultural impact on the world--ESPECIALLY when it comes to music, even if that was hugely influenced by the American legacy of slavery AND racism AND black and black-inspired jazz and rock--you are WAAAAY out there.....

AMERICA and its influence are NOT "white"--and you aren't being racist by acknowledging that.

Hey, didn't like... some 600,000 Americans die in a war to end slavery? That's more than both World Wars combined. And those wars were to... what? Free people... we've fought amongst ourselves even.

America is about Freedom... and I'd say that we've made huge strides in accomplishing that dream. A lot of *us* have died to change the ways of those that came before us. When our fore-fathers came here, it WASN'T JUST a matter of writing the Bill of Rights. The idea of the of the Bill or Rights is still being persued today. You can't just flip a switch and *click* we're all equal!

Take it easy on us. We're working on it and many have died for it... for complete strangers to have a taste of FREEDOM, and we're closer everyday.

Proud to be an American! Yes I am... =)

Is that right? If it was an off-the-cuff comment and you didnt really mean how it came across...then say that but dont offer an example then withdraw it because...as I said....

But, today we have a Black man running for president

There is absolutely no f*cken relevence to whether or not you have a black man running if race pays no part in 2008 USA elections or in ANY case point.

KITES...There's 300 million people in America.
600,000 is a .002 shitty fricken percent %.
Gimme 99% and I might remotely listen to what you said.
The number of World War I casualties, both military and civilian, was over 40 MILLION
The total estimated human loss of life caused by World War II was roughly 72 MILLION
World war 1 and world war 2 were NOT about slavery.
Jesus....What fricken school did you go to....?!!?
Shit...next minute you're gonna tell me invading Iraq was about stopping Bin Laden, terrorism and 911 *unfuckenbelievable*

What happened to this thread? lol.......

As a "dirty American", I can say that there have been countless, yes COUNTLESS times
when a European or Canadian has been sighted for being quite boisterous and just a bit
obnoxious while visiting. And the stories of the Americans being loud outside their
homeland are true too.

I'm gonna pencil it in as an excitement for being where they are, in the moment!

I think it's hard to just pin one country down as being overly exuberant while visiting another.
Maybe it's just that "home away from home" feeling and letting loose?

Yeah, out of love for all the visitors, that's what I'm going with.

OT: I can't understand accents due to a hearing disorder, so I just tend to listen to the
lilt and tones... and nod my head occasionally. LOL!!

The US stayed with slavery longer than any other western nation..

& the death toll from WWII was the wrong side of 30 million..

Jeeze this thread is going down the crapper fast..
