When I shaved and had 'stubble' it would act like sandpaper on my girlfriend, kinda like dermabrasion which kept her looking young and even more kissable so it was a win-win situation! ;-) When I let my beard grow out the hairs softened for some reason but not quite enough for ladyfriend...thats where you can either A..use conditioner to soften the hairs or B some moisturizer. I have learned this from tried and true experience chaps so feel free to use this advice as needed.

The problem with shaving is after a 5 hours your face is more or less like sandpaper again. So then you are faced with the problem of shaving again or have your girl friend complain. I prefer to let them complain. Or with the beard you can trim it once and a while and still get complaints but "at least it's not like sandpaper." (it's actually pretty soft I just think women like to complain) It's a no win situation. Personally I don't care either way an let my g/f decide if I have one or not but the deal is I shave once a day only.

Beards are good if there are lots of mosquitoes though.

The answer is very simple, but I will break it down into several parts for your convienance.

First of all, consider the majestic bowhead whale. With it's massive netting of sinewy fibers, known as "baleen plates", it is able to strain the hundereds of pounds of tiny krill shrimp and plankton that sustain its thick layer of blubber in the subzero waters it calls home. I grow my mustache out whensoever I am in the mood to, for instance. strain the head from a frothy beer, strain the water from a delicious bounty of spaghetti, or devour hundreds of pounds of tiny krill shrimp and plankton.

Secondly, a robust beard provides the kind of insulation necessary to wether the elements. In cold climates, it is a thatch of fur used primarily for warmth. In the arid regions of the desert, a flowing beard filters out the blistering sand from entering the mouth and nasal cavity during a storm. In humid areas it absorbs the runoff of sweat from the face and forhead.

Lastly, and most obviously, it is indeed manly. I submit to you that if you were to picture a roaming band of Visigoths razing medieval fiefdoms across europe, as opposed to some ****, metrosexual emo kid wearing pants so tight they cut off the circulation to his genitals, then you will immediately be able to tell me which of the two categories is adorned by a 3 foot beard, perhaps braided down to some kickass antlers dangling from the bottom of it.

I'm told I look younger with a beard. Guess I just like looking old.

I must be lazy, because there's a hair place in town that will do everything (haircut, beard trim, shave) for $12 and they do a good job. I usually tip heavy afterward because I forget to give the woman a flashlight and a machete so she can do the job right!

It's evil, I know. But, every time I shave the weather cools off 20 degrees. If I shaved every day we'd be up to our eyeballs in polar bears and penguins.

Can you live with that?

i think older men grow facial hair because it hides their wrinkles....for me personally i chose to be clean shaven but it has nothing to do with looks or what women think (women hate my guts anyway) im a sick man in that i enjoy shaving...its very theraputic and relaxing sort of like painting i guess...i love doing it the old school barber shop way...with a steam hot towel and a brush all im missing is a straight razor but to me shaving is not a painful choir where i hurridly slap on some cheap foam and drag a dull disposable across my face and suffer all day from it. as for whether or not it looks manly or not well sure it does have you ever seen a woman with a beard? (i have but i live in saskatoon) but to me a "manly man" DOESN'T NEED a beard to look manly...i think a man with a strong jaw line and a rock chin looks more manly without a beard...but every 1 is different.

Sometimes I can't be bothered to shave, it might look more manly if I was 15.

Gals - What's with the leg and armpit hair? Do you think it looks more "manly"?

Here's how I see it. If a guy has facial hair when you meet him for the first time... get use to it. It most likely won't be coming off. But if he starts growing it after you've been with him a while, then you can comment on it. But don't ever try to change a guy's looks.

For me, I wear a go-tee during the summer months and a full beard during the winter. It just keeps my face warm while outside. I do keep it neat and trimmed back so kissing isn't a problem and you don't taste what I had for lunch!

If you don't like facial hair... don't date a guy who's sporting it when you first meet him! Plan and simple.

Ever live in Alaska or the Yukon.
For that matter anywhere with a colder climate. It is not uncommon to work or play in -30,-40 or -50c. You grow it to stay warm. The women understsnd it, like it and live with it. Yes they can irritate. In the right moment its mind over matter. The complaints would take away from that moment. Look at it this way, for some woman it could even be a badge of lust. Something their friends could tease them about. At least they are getting it. As for the guy with the cheap and lazy statement. You must live in a small world. Beards have a very real use up here. Make that statement to most up here and they would just laugh at you. A few would push you in a snow bank just to watch you shiver and whine about the cold. Then you could go and hang with the girls and talk about panty liners and fashion.
karenrmj, if your encounters are truly passionate the whiskers and the result are irrelevant.

I have had my mustache for 24 years, a Dr. once told me not to shave it off. LOL.

Whatever your sentiments ladies I've never been chastised for having the courtesey to make my ride a padded one.

hey, if they grow the beard long enough i could plait it together with the toe hairs.. save on beads that way!

uh, that would be *his* toe hairs...

(my toe hairs are already joined to those underarm extensions, referred to previously by another poster, with pink shiny ribbons, naturally.. to keep things girly :))

I love growing my beard in the winter, not to mention it's almost a necessity since I'm a carpenter and work outdoors all year round. Makes a huge difference in keeping warm outside, love it! Plus I think it happens to look pretty good on me (shaved head, and I keep the beard trimmed to the same length as my head).

I have had complaints before, but that was when I was lazy for a day and didn't shave, the next day she was kicking my ass for it (she was doing her placement at a public school for teachers college lol, I think she had fun explaining it to her co-workers).

PS - I have pics on my profile of with and without a beard, let me know what you think ladies :) I grow it for myself, but I'm curious to hear what others think, thanks!

I love my goatee & I determine how long it stays as part of me.

A request to go 'barefaced' just because her 'exes' were?

Advance warning : it ain't gonna happen.

NO karen. We dont worry about being manly as we age. Or worrry about being politically correct, or finding our feminine side. And we don't exercise to improve out appearance but to improve our health.

We don't worry about if other people are happy with us. We are more concerned about being happy with ourselves. We have given up on imprressing the chicky babes becasue they are NEVER impressed.

Enough rant!

Our faces develop more lines and blemishes and our skins get more sensitive as we age. Shaving becomes more of a pain. Literally. (It's a bit like older women who dont wax even though their body hair is coarser than younger women. comfort before style.

We also feel the cold more so beards make a nice head scarf.

Finally we get kissed a lot less so the idea of shaving to get more kisses is BS.

Yup; it's the same in rural northern PA. It's unusual to see a clean-shaven man (at least in MY social circles). I've gotten totally used to seeing beards; I don't even notice anymore. But I DO hate it when men leave food in their beard ("to suck on later" as one of my friends says).

I work eighteen hour days sometimes when a project is nearing it's final stages.....I like that extra five minutes of sleep instead of worrying about the razor....... I start growing my 'project beard'....when the project's completed, the hair comes off.........

I have a 'thing' for stubble or beards or, well, facial hair in any form.
I think it is the contrast... soft lips, rough face.
eh, I'm into texture.

There's something to be said about that five o'clock shadow scruff! Certain guys can get away with it and I have no problems with it. I find it kinda sexy, in fact.

I've kissed a guy with a mustache and it never got in the way, but I DO favor a clean-shaven face.

having looked at your pics i'd say you look good either way, your beard is more like a five o'clock shadow/stubble and that can be v sexy ...but when a beard gets bushy or a mustache grows into an hercule poirot handlebar, that's something different, imo.. :S (...but i do understand about facial hair keeping the face warm - the ex used to grow his every winter to help keep his face warm in our harsh ontario winters.... so, i understand it.. doesn't mean i like it.. but i do understand it.. ...just never been partial to getting hairballs after kissing his cheek.... hehehe )
