Geordiebabe,
You have been down the road to hell and back and so you certainly know of what you speak. I can honestly tell you I KNOW how you feel to some degree... hang in there sweet thang and remember those small minded individuals have to sleep with their own conscience.... stress creates cognitive dissonance and that is really more debilitating for us than many other things. Practice random acts of kindness :) god speed

There are a lot more other signs and symptoms of a stroke. Ever heard of "DAN"? (Dysarthria, ataxia, nystagmus, etc.). I won't list everything here since they're easy to find on Google, but just be aware of this.

Also, about the tongue...be careful here- the crooked tongue in isolation could easily be a simple cranial nerve lesion (CNXII, hypoglossal nerve controls the movements of the tongue).

The point is to look at the symptoms collectively. Also, did you know that one of the early signs of a stroke is neck pain?

I just read this thread:

First of all, it's a myth that strokes are more preventable than they really are. There is *no way* to predict that certain people will have a stroke before others. Hell, simply looking over your blind spot can cause a stroke. *Sneezing!* can cause a stroke.

And about the half smile- it could be, and it could be something else. It could be Bell's Palsy, for all you know (Uniparalysis of CN VII, the Facial nerve). If this is in conjunction with a lot of other signs and symptoms, then rush the person to the hospital immediately.

Also, yes, the brain can survive for 5 minutes following ischemia (cut bloodflow). The heart can survive up to 30.
