80's Hot or not

The eighties were hot...what I can remember! LOL

It was my "party" decade... I think it was everyones party decade. There was some cheese... but it was "fun" cheese. I remember looking around one day and ALL the girls were dresses like Madonna...with the scrunchie and everything. All the guys were doing the New Wave look..well not all but a lot.

The music was very light, upbeat. lots of electronica, and for me being a punk/goth there was some really good music also. (umm...depeche mode, bauhaus, Patti Smith, ...etc...)
When I am down I still put on "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves! (ssshhhh...don't tell anyone) or "Whip it" by Devo.. they make me smile.

Hard Rock was a little disappointing however until Metallica got big... remember Ratt? Or Platinum Blonde? scary.

I still like "off the shoulder" sweaters...but I retired the acid wash jeans! And the excess of costume jewelry LOL

I loved the 80s. I agree with you OP. I loved the way women dressed and the "big hair" of the 80s was something I will always miss. The 80s was a special time to me, but I'm sure probably most people say that about there generation growing up. I think the 80s was the best though, the music was some of the best bands then etc. I have a jacket that is so 80s. Has all my favorite metal bands all wrote all over it, I wear it sometimes still. I don't wear it much though because a friend when I was in high school made it for me. He was great at making band logos and stuff and I don't want anything to happen to it because it's so old now.

I do wish women would put on the faded skirts and bring out the hair spray again and get that big hair look going on again. That was very sexy I thought.

I do miss the 80s!

Ah the 80's ...what I miss about it.

Softball at ps 208 field (now long since built over)

Building go karts, copper shooters, poppers and sling shots...trying to do tricks on my friends bmx. (I never had one)

Playing skelly from 9 am to 9 pm at night with the neighborhood kids in the street. (If you don't know...then you obviously aren't from NYC) ;)

Playing an early morning game of UNO with my class mates in JR High.

School lunch at my HS , Brooklyn Tech. Yes I said it! I loved school lunch! Especially those ice cold chocolate drinks that came in those containers that was just a gulp too small!

My Atari 2600 VCS.

Playing combat and pac man until my thumbs hurt.

My Atari 800xl (which I still have but it's destroyed)

Coding basic programs on my Atari 800xl into the wee hours of the night only to stay up even later debugging (and back then debugging was a serious ****..you had to go over EVERY line of code, no code trace!)

My Atari 1040St (given away to a friend years ago)

Logging in on my 5400 Baud modem (which I still own) and getting "online" with the Genie service back in 1989 (yes before Tim Berners Lee invented http)

I miss Night Rider, Hill Street Blues, Wild America and 3,2,1 Contact on PBS.

As for the music, well Hip Hop was born in NYC and I do miss the early clean fun seeking aspect to the music which has now been commercialized away into sterile materialistic /misogynistic oblivion.

Ah the 80's....definitely Hot!

80's - Hot in RETROspect! I wore the shoulder pads, the stirrup pants, and the button fly 501 jeans. I remember guys wearing eyeliner and I thought it was hot. My car was a two tone, blue 1977 Ford Maverick. I thought it looked smokin', but it certainly didn't have the "azz of a cheetah".

NOT HOT - What sticks out in my head about the 80's: the AIDS epidemic and the Persian Gulf War. I didn't know anyone with AIDS until the 90's and I didn't know anyone in the Persian Gulf War, but they both tilted the earth.

HOT - U2, Mellencamp, Prince, MTV, Atari, Smurfs, and Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I do not miss the time and money that I used to spend on making "big hair". Perms, and one bottle of Spritz Forte every six weeks really added up.

i LOVED the 80's. aids wasn't a worry yet. everyone pretty much went out just for fun. very little drama in those days. i liked going to rock concerts and not having to be frisked first.

and the cars, not the 80's cars, but the the cars an early 20's college student could afford. you could buy a 10 year old muscle car for a few hundred bucks. i had a gto judge, a roadrunner, a chevelle, a cuda. i loved those cars.

getting into bars underage was a snap, booze cruises every weekend, and those drive-in parties.

and lets not forget the best part of the '80's. those painted on jeans and the CAMEL TOE

80's Any one miss it.And or still dress like they would back then
The way Woman dressed and the Hair was great I think 80's rock It was a great time.Even my nephew thinks so.

What a great thread. I'd give up this hair for 3" of bangs in a heartbeat. One-hit-wonders. Big Hair Bands. Even Paula Abdul had appeal back then. Oh my God, I had forgotten about so many things ~ Stretch Armstrong, the stuff inside his arms was so incredibly odd. Music videos with music. Pre-Bobby Brown-Whitney Houston not on crack. (Sorry, that wasn't very nice, true however.) The Vega. The car all my friends "just had to have." Dating ~ you'd meet, he'd come to the house, have a drink with the folks, go to dinner/movie and home. No background checks, no "how many people have you had sex with" blah blah blah. I'd go retro in a minute if someone would find me some blue/green/orange eye shadow and give me a Flock of Seagulls Concert tee-shirt. On the flip side, we had the first HIV/Aids death (giving 70s 'free love' a new meaning.) Skud missles, not hand to hand combat. Pricess Diana married Dork-boy when I was 16. The space shuttle blew up. In hindsight, I'd still go back without any reservations whatsoever.

Remember the great music videos? Most of the time, they had some narrative going on - an actual storyline...not just scantily clad girls shaking their booty while badly dressed guys pose and act like pimps.

me first people? there was never a worse time for "me first" kind of people than NOW!....the new generation of ppl youre lucky if they dont step right over you...and god help you behind the wheel they'll run you right off the freakin road....at least in the 80s there was still a few old school values left among the average person and if there was ever a fight between young ppl....it was 1 on 1...there was a touch of integrity where as today its 6 or 8 on 1 with knives...and as for bad music and bad styles...at least in the 80s ppl didnt wear pants you could fit a family of 9 in them and you didnt have f uckin eminem and ja-rule.....no i say if we're goanna pick on the 80s we oughtta pick on the 2000s too because this decade has its share of embarrassment too.

"Me First" gen probably was a bit conceited. But this new gen of "Group Think"
is scarrier. No individualism is just a conformist socialist herd mentality.
They don't think outside of anything. They text message away at each other
and they're two feet away. Same way with the phones....I can't make my own
decisions but I still want choices. Let's all decide what I'll do.
Damn ...I gotta go spew...."barf"
Give me the '80's over these meatheads anyday!

well if your my age the 80's were the best, the music had ska, northern soul ,reggae, punk, new wave, disco, funk, now theres covers by the sugarbabes for instance my niece thought was a top tune, till i moderately told her tubeway army beat them to it 29 yrs ago.i dont think i could go through my spandau ballet tartan trouser look again though.the women did have the big hair then too,itd take you 5 minutes to get noticed at the bar cause they had 3 tins of harmony on their head

80's gave us one of the best movies every made.....Breakfast club....

what makes this movie so great, it depects high school life too a tee.....and you can apply it in ANY generation...

lets not forget molly ringwald....every movie she had guy problems....

madonna got me thru puberty in the 80's....

NWA....one of the great rap groups ever...they talked about REAL shit in the streets...

now you just have posers who claim they are from the "street'...all I ever hear in any rap song is

"im from a town...b town...c town...h town...g town..bla bla bla...

"i got bling, I got b i t ches...bla bla bla....every rap song is the same crap over and over...

Some of the styles were crazy and all I wouldn't say the 80's were hot. But
I remember them well being a child of the 80's. Here are some of the things I remember

Thundercats
Transformers
He-Man
The Greatest American Hero
A-Team
Def Leppard
Van Halen
Michael Jackson (when he was black)
Culture Club
The list can go on....

So you actually know what skelly is? ;) I think there was (I've not confirmed by looking at any stats) some sort of mini baby boom in the early 70's after all the Vietnam soldiers started coming back home to settle down (though my father wasn't a vet), might be why there were so many 80's babies like us then aye?

Atari forever!

Right on man! I have a Atari 2600 also and yes I still do play it. Atari 2600 proves that you don't need fancy graphics to have great game play.

A few of my favorite 2600 games.

1. Robot Tank
2. Barn Storming
3. Sky Diver
4. Mega Mania
5. River Raid
6. Pit Fall
7. Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
8. Asterioids
9. Outlaw
10 Breakout

I could go on with many more. Those are some of my top games though. Yes, the 80s was a very special time indeed.
