I don't own a VCR or a DVD player...I have an older computer, and still have the same cell phone for the last three years...I live by the example my parents set for me when I was a kid...I am "old school" in certain aspects, and up to date in others... I raised my children differently than my parents did...my kids turned out OK.

Just finished reading the whole Thread. WOW! for all the Poster
I was raised in the a small town area, yet lived distant from the Public School System. You know had to walk uphill both ways from the school bus stop, kinda distance.. No snow Just iced over pine trees The values instilled from my parents (both still with us) stick very well. We had to prepare for the luxury of living on a Lake. For years we used plastic milk jugs to bring potable water to the house. Did not have to worry about a remote. Only got one channel, and not very well. Having a front yard of water, and a back yard of woods, only one tv station, and EVEN TO THIS DAY ONE LOCAL RADIO STATION that somehow is able to block all the good RF int a 50 mile radius from making it to the receiver: meant we did a lot of family things together. Fish fries, camping, boating, hunting, venturing off to see the unblemished land, building the dream house, living good.
Technology to me then was so much different than now. I remember finding somehow on radio "The King Biscuit Flour Hour", I thought, wow nobody at school is going to believe this!
So from LP's, 78's, 45's, to 8 track, to cassette~DD, to laser, to CD, to MP3,to DVD, HDDVD, to BlueRay we go.
From party line tele, to VoIP. From keypunch to SixAxis Motion Controller.
From Rand McNally and looking for moss on the side of a tree, to GPS (which somehow lost itself)!
From Poloiod Instant to digital all your battery and mem card can hold pictures.
From rabbit ears to cable to satellite all the way back to rabbit ears HD.. some things are just fun to poke at.
From living on a Lake with the music of whippoorwills and the light of lightening bugs to living in a suburb with music of stray cats in heat and the lights of the LED's.
From one TV station on snowy BW to I can see you now on internet, on 47" LCD. From pong to commodore, to 5 PC's, cell phones, robotic weather cams, to personal weather monitor.
From get off the couch and turn off that TV, to get off the couch and find the remote, oh crap batteries are dead, crap no batteries, off to the store, have to get gas, forgot I needed WHOLE milk and coffee, what am i here for.. oh well at least I have coffee, back home, with the tv still on...
I was raised to think independently, nothing has changed, dad said go look it up in the dictionary. Tools have changed. Google it!
When my parents move to the new house being constructed, and the childhood castle and the dream of having a slide from my window to the deep water, is sold, the flood gates will open.. helping to pack them will bring back the memories, the values still stand. ...I still don't know how to eat a fish and not get a bone in stuck in my mouth..
Thanks so much for this thread.. lots of people got my pic in there shopping cart on this one.. You all have some very interesting life lesson! Warm Regard.

OP>>>*Byrd*

Do you have strong morals? Set in cement like our parents? Are you set in the old way of doing things? Do you have a computer? How old is it? Do you use a VCR Or have you moved up to a DVD Player? How about you choice of movies? Books? Music? How were you as a kid? "Dazed and Confused?" or All business, no pleasure? I'm just wondering how others are..When I was a kid I was a total stoner, they called us "Heads" Then I like cult films with artistic value and touchy feely movies "Hallmark" stuff..Music 60's 70's classic rock Books Bio's, something with good stories..some western, horror, mystery..I have a VCR, In fact I have 3..My computer is very old and haunted the original owner has recently passed..I am a mean old man set in very old ways very unlike my upbringing of HippieDom. But I still alittle. Ah h*ll I'm just wondering how much people have changed in their lives..

I also think I'm a mix of both. I totally embraced new technology, got a cell phone years ago, got rid of landline, been banking online for what seems like eons. Love the internet and the instant connection it gives you with far away loved ones.

I don't live in the past, my taste in music has totally changed in the past few years (Buddha Bar anyone?), I look forward to the future. I'm truly living my best years. But my values remain the same, that's unlikely to change. Why should it change because of technology?

On beliefs and principles, old skool. Respect others no matter how big of idiots they are, open doors for others, not just the elderly and women, wait for your date to pull both of her feet in the car before closing the door, no matter how bad it's going

On just about everything else, bleeding edge. I like to keep up with new things, actually wish i was born 100 years later, this world moves way to slow for me...
My main computer is less than a year old
My cell phone cost (way to much!)
I have 3 internet based phone lines, goodbye ma-bell!
My kid and nephew are surprised i know the games they play and music they listen to.
They even borrow my cd's!
I have 3 vcrs but never use them as such, i have 5 dvd players and recorders
My lights are controlled by my computer and another computer answers my phone and tells me when to go to bed! (Not that i ever listen to it!)

"No wise man ever wished to be younger."
Jonathan Swift (1667 - 1745)

You see? This desire to be younger has been around a long, long time.

America and Americans never cease to amaze me....we are such a country of extremes....we either go too far to the right or too far to the left.

What's wrong with taking the best of the old, and the best of the new, and staying right in the middle? That's what I like to think I do....

Good topic byrd! (turn turn turn and all that)

then: morals? what are those but outdated standards set by those in power to control us. now. yep there is a god and there are rules and rules are not always bad.

then: stoner, sex drugs and rock and roll. now. at least the rock and roll is the same but i kinda like ragae and caribian music too.

putor: desktop

dvd: nope, vcr

movies: then, no interest really. now action flicks, sci fi and super hero movies (hey some things never change)

some things have not changed though: i still hate country music

others have: i like school now (good thing since im a teacher) and i like westerns. (after reading dee brown back in the 70's i hated all things cowboy)

anyway good topic. gives you some things to think about and makes you aware that change is possible and therefore there is always a reason to hope!!!!!!

Am I 'old school?' In some ways, yes. I have deeply held morals, I don't believe that wearing "backyard bar-b-que" clothes to work is appropriate, I don't think using slang in everyday conversation says much about the speaker, and I believe in looking as good as possible. However, I am a techno-dude, own more iPods than I need, have just purchased a new iPhone to replace the other one I bought in November 2007, I would never go back to the days of my youth, I don't relive my Viet Nam war experiences every day, and I think that folks that continue to "live in the past" are depriving themselves of a terrific life in the here-and-now.

I'm not so sure that holding onto the old "things" of the past makes one "old school." I think it makes one old. No matter what the chronological age. And admitting that one is "a mean old man set in very old ways" is indicative more of some deeply-held fear than of holding onto old morals and such.

^^^^^^

I'm old school morals, but I too love technology. At work my younger than me boss is incredibly impressed with my computer knowledge and calls me when he has problems with his. Of course with age comes wisdom; I'm smart enough to have the cell number to this great 22 yr old computer geek. I draw the line at sodering motherboards. :)

how old school?
not very.

like the lady before me, I'm often called upon to help others at work....and I'm quickly approaching 58. I'm also almost the oldest at my workplace. lol
I love my cell with all it's bells and whistles (music, pics, etc.), I wish that I could learn photoshop...sigh, I don't listen to the music of my youth much, but my tastes are all over the map--not stuck in the 60's, and in this-- my golden years of dating, I have grown up and have learned a thing or two about what makes me content and how to "deal" with that that doesn't.

life goes on....and so do I.

I think that I have very strong morals, discounting a few disastrous mistakes along the years. I think I might be set in the old way of doing things, Just because there is a new way, I dont necessarily think it is a better way.. Still like the adventure and action movies; don;t care at all for the blood and guts scary movies nowdays. Like the books, dislike the music exccept rap. As a kid, I was very serious and studious. Do NOT like the Hallmark or weepy stuff. Do not like to cry. Have Dvd, super fast computer (my son is a software developer and keeps me in the latest and greatest computers), But, moved out to the country as city life has gotten a little fast and anonymous. You feel like little ants scurrying around. I prefer the slower pace of the country.

You can. It's just a computer software application, not astrophysics. It takes time, but you can.

This is an interesting phenomena that I have seen recently. Many folks don't use the personal pronoun "I" as the subject when writing sentences. I wonder why? Why not say, "I still like the adventure..." and "I have a DVD and a super fast computer" and "I like books but I dislike the music exccept rap." (spelling is another issue, isn't it?)

Curious.

Hey, Byrd! Great topic! I guess I'm pretty old-fashioned in some ways. I was dragged into the computer-age kicking and screaming. My (then)husband got one in 1995 and I never touched it until two years later. Once I learned the basics, I never looked back. Now I couldn't be without it. I'd rather give up TV than my computer/internet. But I do not have a cell-phone. I dislike talking on the phone anyway, so if someone calls my land line, I'm either home to answer it (if I don't have the ringer off ) or they can leave a message and I might check later; I usually forget. Yes, I'm a technophobe. I don't have a Playstation, Wii, or other gadget like them. I have a VCR/DVD combination player, but have to ask one of my kids how to set it if I want to watch a DVD. I had to get a new computer a few months ago, because I just love my (legal) on-line music download service so much, that the old harddrive just gave up the ghost.

I don't live in the past, my taste in music has totally changed in the past few years...

It's so very rare to find a person like that. It seems to me that most people get stuck in one decade, music-wise. Like most people around my age listen to little else but '80s classic rock; stuff they must have heard a million times by now! What's up with that?? My taste in music also has changed a lot over my lifetime. Most songs I liked when I was in my teens and 20s, I no longer care to listen to. I'm very slow to embrace new technology, though, and my ignorance about it is sometimes embarrassing. But, I figure, if I've lived without (fill-in-the-blank) this long, I can live without it, period.
