No, your job should not necessarily be a huge factor in determining your value, one needs to look at the whole person. Your job just so happens to be one of the more obvious aspects of you that people see right off the bat, like physical appearance. So if someone only has 30 seconds, they're only going to see the obvious things.
I think your post is ironic though, since I have seen a number of posts by guys under the "Ask a girl" section querying women whether or not the guy's job made a big difference. A large number of the responses were along the lines of "Damn right it does, I don't want to date a 7-11 clerk!" I find that revealing to say the least.
