Speaking for myself and only myself ... I didn't get married til I was 32, got divorced at 37 and this time in the dating pool I have determined that age really is just a number. I have limits, I don't really want to date someone that hasn't passed 30 - there's a lack of commonality there. I also have upper limits on age - If some one is closer to my dad's age than mine not gonna happen.

I find these parameters work pretty well, but I also learned volumes about myself between 30 and 37 so that may have factored into the willingness to date younger.

As for society in general, perception changes, the people in their 30's today were born in the 70's (for the most part) and are a product of a less restrictive view of relationships.

I totally agree GirlTexan.
If someone is younger than 30 or older than 50 (I'm 40) they're not usually compatible with me. That doesn't mean it is set in stone, but I have found that I relate better to guys just a little younger than me.
I still have a strong sense of adventure but a strong sense of responsibility - I would like to find the same. For me, that developed over the years.
I find that in general, your sense of self is better developed once you hit your thirties.
Women in their 40s now that are single are often very independent and don't need a man but just would like to have someone wonderful to share their life with.
When you are younger you often are happy with - he's cute and fun.
As I get older, I want someone who is intellectually and spiritually on the the same page as me. I do think that this is rare.
I was born in the sixties and have a much less materialistic and more creative side to me that is not often found in young professionals.
I guess what I am trying to say is that I have found a balance and seek the same.

I generally date men within a plus or minus 5 year age range. I like signs of aging in a man. Wrinkles when he smiles, some gray hair. Looks are deceiving though. These aren't always signs that a man is mature.

Even though I have an age preference, I still have to really get to know the man first. I don't want someone going through a mid life crisis.

I feel uncomfortable with "ways" he may try to prove his virility to his self sexually. And there may be a lot of "pretending" to be someone he is not going on.

I would rather date a younger man than to date an older man going through a mid-life crisis.

ZI tend to agree with smilestyle... 5 years is a pretty safe span... lol... however I still find that I am too old for some & not young enough for others... is it just men in general?... or am I really just that out of date with the dating times?

I am 44 years old and I find that men more in my age range (40 to 50) are more attractive, mature and sexier.

Maybe it's wishful thinking or maybe I'm hanging around a different crowd - I am noticing the whole "cougar" thing cooling off a bit and some women I know in their 30s and 40s are now quite adamant about keeping the young dudes away... Could be for this reason - While it's a great thing for women looking for "friends with benefits", the idea of a lasting relationship(or any relationship outside the bedroom) is rarely, if ever, there. As I noticed when I went after older women as a 22 yr old struggling college student still living at home, most young guys still look at older women for 2 things - sex(with no or very little strings) and support (It was great at that time not to waste a paycheck trying to impress a fellow 20 something!).

Another thing - Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore aren't anything new. Dinah Shore grabbed Burt Reynolds in the 60s and women used that as a rallying cry then(according to my mom). Just as we men can't expect Catherine Zeta Jones if we aren't Michael Douglas ... Don't expect an Ashton Kutcher unless you ARE Demi Moore.

Insurance and medical charts show that men live shorter lives than women. I've also noticed that I'm active and full of life whereas many available guys in my age group are emergent grandparent couch potatoes, many with health issues. My question: what do they want to build with me?

When I was younger, I was interested in finding a man who wanted to make a home life, and older men knew about cooking, house maintenance, conversation, and planning. I am still looking for that kind of guy.

Likewise, there's "being on the same page spiritually"...that is more important than age.

Kinda weird, I'll be 45 next month....everyone of my friends say I do not look a day over 34-35. Hell, I still ride my skateboard to my bank down the street and the women tellers think it's pretty cool. I guess all their hubby's are blobby dudes who are growing roots into the sofas as home. I can't relate to the "average" 45 year old woman...not into classic rock and I'm not stuck in the 80's. I relate much better to the 25-35 year old women. I'm not really into bringing another child into this world although adopting one at a later date is not out of the question. I'm soooooooooo screwed....LOL.

I want a man within a few years of myself, but got to say I met a guy recently who was 10 years old who looked my age so its all relative to the person. I have a difficult time when we get closer to my parents age and it weirds me out so never go any older than about 10 years older. As for younger, I found that even dating 26 year olds is difficult, but like I said before depends on the guy.

I tend to find that the younger guys are the ones doing the chasing,i have never pursued a younger man but am always being asked out or chatted up by guys in their early twenties, think its that thing about women in their thirtys not being needy, more confident and knowing exactly what we want out of life plus the added bonus of being more sexually experienced that the younger guy seems to find attractive. What can i say us gals have it all!!

Maybe it's because they know by the time they are 40, the men their own age will be looking for someone in their 20's, so they are just getting a jump on looking for a guy in the age group that will be interested in them then.

Well for me, like a lot of women have said before me on this thread, I don't have any age group that I look at more than any other, it all comes down to being able to click with someone.
However, me personaly, I wouldn't expect to click on an emotional or mental level with a guy that was a lot younger than me, (I wouldn't rule it out, just expect it to be other than the norm). Maybe the person that started this thread has mainly come across women looking for some fun times (on a physical level) rather than anything more meaningfull or long term?

Well I still prefer men exact same age as me or I usually have the best luck with 2-3 years older than myself...but I think with some it is all about sex...the younger guys have great physiques, but for me...I like to match someone on intellectual level....no matter how nice a younger guys body may be they just aren't on the same life experience level...Also as a mother of a 16 year old son...when we are out and I see older ladies maybe 10 years older looking at him...it kinda gets to me...b/c i do not think it is appropriate and would not hesitate to enforce that law if some older woman tried taking advantage of my son before he turned 18 ( like a teacher of something very inappropriate)....sorry if that sounds horrible, but i am a mother and it is my job to keep the vultures away....I really don't like this trend and do not think it is good for society in the long term

Ridiculous. What does age matter? And why do people care so much more when its an older woman and a younger guy? Pointless.

I'm going to premise this by saying there are exceptions to every rule.

That said, my experiences with men over 45 has been absolutely horrible. In fact, my friends are experiencing the very same thing, so it's not unique to me.

The men over 45 that I've dated would rather sit on the couch most nights and watch TV. If they do want to go out it's usually dinner or a movie, but most of the time they're satisfied sitting at home.... which is fine, but I don't think you can live a life from a couch. Men a little younger seem to like to keep more active.

The men over 45 that I've dated have been very impatient, condescending, made rude or controlling comments, and seemed to prefer a slave to a partner. I have a theory.... maybe it's because men my age had their moms home and doing everything around the house and for them. They grew up believing it was "woman's work." I've even had older guys tell me they hoped I cooked, because they don't and they would prefer the woman do the domestic chores and they would take care of the cars and yard work. (sigh)

Younger men seem to be a little more forgiving of physical flaws. Every single man over 45 that I've gone out with thought I was fat and didn't mind tell me that too. A lot of younger men seem to prefer a woman who's a little thick.

Most older men believe my preference for a younger man has to do with the whole "boy toy" theory, which is ridiculous. I'm looking for the whole package... someone who can keep up with me, doesn't sit around all the time flipping channels, and likes me for who I am. I don't date younger men unless I'm absolutely sure older women are their preference. One guy I lived with for a while who was quite a bit younger than I was, had been married to a woman who was 14 years older. Every one of his girlfriends or women he dated were at least 10 years older than he was.

I think the preference for a younger man also has a lot to do with having raised our families, put everyone else before us, and now that our kids are grown, we have some money to play with, and women my age are a whole lot more active than women my age used to be.... we're ready to have some fun in life. We want someone who appreciates how we've evolved and wants to be by our side as we sometimes feel we're experiencing life for the very first time.

After dating someone who was 26 and 3.5 years younger than I, I realized that it provoked my motherly instincts to be with him more than it aroused my inner natural woman.

Although I don't judge a person without knowing them, I do have pre-concieved notions about a persons character just by their circumstances. At a time I preferred dating someone who didn't have children-- especially young children to women they were never married to or entirely divorced from. Once you hit 30 and beyond, it's hard to find men who fit that profile AND have many of the other qualities that are attractive to me. So I found myself with someone who is younger-- and much less experienced in life. The lack of experience was a turn off for me.

I haven't reached an age or a financial status where I only want sex. I think older women who have stable, self-sufficent lifestyles can declare a 10+ year age difference as fit but not for me. I also don't want a man who is much older than I either. I'm too jovial and busy-bodied at 32 for someone who is too 'old' for an ocassional White Zombie live show and drinks only for dinner.

You will find different "trends" dependent on the "trend" of your focus.

Few women make trends ~ they follow them ~ good women , follow mother or grandmother or become trend setters of their own.

are you looking at trends or tend setters ~

this hollywood glamor buch ~ set trends ~ and young ones follow

if they are dating mulicultural ~ they will follow

If they are dating cows ~ everybody wants a cow ~

It's real , it's silly ~ and I'd pay it no never mind. ~it'll pass

we find a friend where ever we find them ~ period!

it's whatever shape of form they may come in.

young women offer me more attention then I can handle,

and I'm not so pretty as just together and complete ~ I know how to listen, laugh and visit with someone ~ ub2 ~ dar

I like younger guys! Generally I have had more fun with younger men than men my age, but maybe that is because I like the same music, share some of the same interests, and yes....it makes me feel younger.......more energetic, more motivated. Hmmmmm recapturing my youth? Maybe....but its soooo much fun!

I don't really take all that much account of age when it comes to dating - it's a bit cliched but I really do think it's just a number. I have met men older than myself who are incredibly immature, and men younger who seem older than me. It's all relative. I look for personal qualities in a man. And I think the comments about women's independence are very true - I don't need (or want) a man to 'look after' me. I am my own person and want a partner who will enhance my life. In my experience (and again many will disagree), looking after a woman can mean controlling her also. And that's just not going to happen :-).
