Are guns/ hunting a turn off for most women?

What, if anything could a guy do to portray these things in a more positive light?
I vote for 'Nothing'.
Sorry, but I personally would not want a man that is able to kill animals ( unless it was for self-protection); even fishing ( an release) disturbs me.
A pistol , I could understand,if it is for self defense and there is a reason for it. But still, I would want it to be locked away.

Try Stalk-style bowhunting. It's DIFFICULT. You have to scout for weeks/months in advance, be a human-scent-free as possible and use cover scents to get close enough to make a shot. Add to that the effective range of a bowshot is between 5 & 40 yards because those dang deer will DUCK under your arrow if you are farther out than that. Not to mention how hard it is to sneak up on a deer instead of sitting in a treestand and hoping one will pass near you...

Oh my god I have never been remotely close enough with my bow because the deer are smart! D:<

To anyone who says it doesn't help with population control, you should try and look up your facts first. In Pennsylvania, it is a necessary way to control the deer. There are far too many for the space that they have. Want to get angry over it? Get angry at Toll Brothers Co for overdeveloping land and buying up all the farm space. The deer have no space, no predators, and breed like no tomorrow. That and they taste yummy. :D

I also fail to see how this is so horrible compared to what happens to livestock.

Right now at Eglin AFB in Florida, there is a HUGE population of feral Spanish Hogs that were imporperly released in the 1950's and have basically completely screwed up the ecosystem...there are some black bear that do take a few, but for the most part the pigs eat the Bear & Deer food, starving them out. We don't have deer, we have coyote with horns! Anyway, you are allowed ONE hog a day and TWO deer a day in Florida. (However, some Game Warden's feel that since the hog is not indigenous it falls under feral farm animal and will allow you take as many as you can carry out...on Private Property Only! ) I prefer to take hog with a blackpowder rifle...it gives you a few more weeks hunting time...and then we have BBQ pork for the whole Neighborhood!!

Eat whatcha shoot. Anything less is a waste. And with Gas so dang high & rising, I REALLY am gonna be hunting hard this year...cheaper to fill up with deer & hog than it is to go to a grocery store.

Livestock are killed primarily with pnuematic tools these days, but when I was a kid at a Tennessee Milk Cow farm, you would finalize a non-producer by imagining an X that goes from right eye to left ear & left eye to right ear...and then hitting the X with a sledgehammer. Things have improved since then...thank God. Oh, that X works on other things as well...it's also handy for stopping a Pit Bull gone berserk with a ball-peen hammer.

I grew up hunting and fishing. Guns don't bother me at all. I won't hunt anything I won't eat. Frankly, I don't have much respect for the anti-hunting crowd unless they also happen to be vegatarians. Factory farming is much less humane than hunting.

I have wanted to go hunting for years to no avail, I do like wild meat it is the best. I have no issues with rifles in my home. I do believe it is in how you are raised and knowledge of fire arms. GUNS DON''T KILL PEOPLE TALKING ON THE CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING........

Since I am a vegetarian, you will probably be surprised to learn that I am in favor of hunting. I know that other people are not going to stop eating meat because of my feelings. Animls that are hunted are treated much more humanely than those raised in factory farms to become steaks. When people buy meat from a store, they don't have to think about where it actually came from. I think children should see how animals are turned into food and be able to make decisions for themselves about if they want to eat it. I think if most people had to hunt and process their own meat, they would think it's more trouble than it's worth. I have a number of friends who hunt, and thay all do it very responsibly and humanely. I don't like to hear the details of how they killed it and gutted it though, and it upsets me when they say that they shot a deer but it ran off and they couldn't find it to put it out of its misery.

Phoenix, that's one of the more reasonable posts I have seen from a vegetarian. I highly respect your logic and reasoning. It is amazing to me that so many don't understand the process of what goes into putting food on their table. I am a meat eater and was raised a hunter, but never a trophy hunter and I always understood the process of where food comes from. As an adult, whenever my finances allow, I purchase free range milk, eggs, and animal products. It's not a perfect system but I think we all should do what we can to improve conditions when we become aware of them. Again, I applaud the thought you have put into this.

I'm not a hunter but do own some firearms including Class 3 weapons. If anything, that should make me stand out as someone who hasn't had anything serious as far as criminal activity or anything else that would prohibit me from owning them. Class 3 weapons require extensive FBI and Interpol background checks for approval and take anywhere from 3-6 weeks to complete. And you have to pay the government $200 on top of it for a tax stamp as well.

Phoenix, you just set the high water mark for vegetarians everywhere. Not sure why any hunter would find it important to explain to a non-hunter the gutting and killing details. As you know, any good hunter takes pride in accuracy and prefers to take an animal as painlessly as possible and would never take a shot where there was a strong chance of wounding an animal and making it suffer. Anyone who bashes hunting and has ever eaten a morsal of chicken or beef is living at the peak of hypocrisy

Hunting/guns aren't a turn off for me personally, but I don't want to have to go with a man to the 'woods' to do said hunting. I will even partake enthusiastically in his kill if he's of a mind to share with me.

I don't, however, agree with trophy kills like the big game hunts in the mid-western states that lure wanna-be hunters from all over the country. If you want to kill to eat, fine. If not, leave the animals alone.
