Hoopdog!

My goodness. Maybe you should re-read what I wrote. I'm not knocking anything. The truth is, I paint and my work can even be seen in different venus around my small town. I have studied art. I understand the masters, expressionism, realism, modern art and every other ism but, I am still allowed to have my own opinion. You may not share it and that's okay... individualISM is what makes the world go round. You say potatoe I say potato.

We all have the option to express our own thoughts and beliefs, through art, through words, through music, through whatever medium you choose. There is no one answer or truth when it comes to a topic as subjective as this. You don't have it and neither do I. To believe you do is a bit egotistic and a lot arrogant.

My last post was about MY thoughts on all creativity, not just art. I'm sorry if you are offended by that interpretation but, I am not swayed by you or Mary McCleary. Thank heaven there are people that appreciate your talent, and even some that appreciate mine, but I have never met an artist that didn't bite their nails at a gallery opening wondering if the masses would understand the work. Not everyone applauds every piece of art they see. Some find it mundane while others call it genius. I say again. "I stand in awe of ALL original thought...I appreciate craftsmanship" The operative word in that sentence being "I".

Art is capturing the magic of Life.

Many people think Art is just paintings and sculpture, but that's only because those things have survived wars and destructions of Man.

Dramatic art and Music is the refinement, the compression, of Life. There is seeming movement, kinetic visual forms in the still arts as well, similar compression of some of the key essence of Life.

A theme from Music stands on itself on a piece of paper, a few notes with a start and end. Dramatic art does not have to be looped or repeated. Motion in Art is eternal. Some of the greatest performances in film and music were only done once and recored on a plastic medium, forever. We can hear the wood squeak in the floor at the last note, the last words for eternity. Like Glenn Gould or Leontyne Price, or Maria Callas, or Emily Watson. The greats leave a mark on the soul of the world.

A great dramatic line in film is said once and it is remembered. A great musical phrase is played once and you never forget it from the first listen. Some of the greatest lines from Dostoyevsky are open sentences... ad libs, almost questions. Unfinished phrases from Schumann. Shakespeare asks us questions. The tragedies of Euripides ask us moral questions many of us can't answer until we live life.

Art captures the Magic of Life? Great Art whether it be visual, musical, written or dramatic makes you, forces you, to change the World for the better. It changes your perception on a profound level.

Art is the distorted expressions of the real world, sometimes going beyond what is real. It's an imagery, driven by creative energy and vivid imagination. The antithesis of truth and knowledge. It give the possibility to think above and beyond the confines of reality.

Art is the distorted expressions of the real world

Yes. All art is manipulation, of the physical world as well as psychologically.

The antithesis of truth and knowledge.

But that doesn't mean the above ^^ is correct. Truth, the most profound truths, can paradoxically be discovered through so-called "fiction".

Art is anything people do to make something appealing or attractive... to themselves or others... from the way they look to the way the speak or act to things they build or decorate... from auto upholstery to ceramics to music or designing cars, planes, pens or skyscrapers. Even loving is an art when some people do it.

art is a way of expressing your self that gets others thinking. there must be passion for it to be art...some kind of driving force that reaches from the work and affects people.

my inspirations are simple. rooted in curiosity, travel, politics, emotion and psyche...
it comes out in my writing, my painting, my sketches and, little by little, my music.

What art is...a physical representation of the emotional

What art is to me? Don’t have an answer for that one. Would be like trying to describe what it is to me to be able to see, hear, or feel.

Art to me is a breath of fresh air. It has been a long time since I did some art work like painting. I do crocheting, and sewing. When I here someone speak of art I think of Van Gogh, Modigliani, Vermeer. The masters. For me viewing their works whether reproductions on the computer or in person cleanses my soul and gives me a fresh new peace.

Pure Heaven!

Art comes in all forms from the catogories of painting, sculpture, photography, design, graphics, animation, and one thousand other areas. It is a way of expressing yourself without words spoken, a way of leaving the earth that we live on and travelling on a journey that takes you to heaven and back again. Without it this world would be a very dull meaningless place to be, as it designs cities, entertainment, our way of life. It can make the dullist of days a shinning horizon.

I couldn't myself live without it, as it helps to make me whole.

ART is what seperates humans from the animals and possibly the only real link to God.

Art is the consideration, admiration and injection of aesthetics in life.
You need not create the art but you do need to recognize it ... hence ... found object art.
one of my artistic mottos developed in the late 70's is...
"Life is kenetic sculpture" [God's great work of art]

with this in mind ... absolutely anything anyone does can be art as long as they consider the aesthetics of what they are doing and inject some of that consideration into it or as in abstract expressionism ... they later admire the aesthetics of it after its random momentary creation.

and yes ... it has been done .... chicken scratches have become art through aesthetic consideration and admiration of humans. [ we are a strange lot ]

Real artists can draw or paint well, all in freehand.
I don't like some of the weird paintings or junk that is considered art, I think preschoolers can do that.
Also an artist can draw things with precise detail and make the drawings come to life!

What art is to me ... not just a 'word', that's for certain;

art, to me, is not about pleasing the masses, it's about one's soul; it's a personal expression.

Whether or not art, in any form, moves me personally ... is irrelevant. Someone was expressing themselves ... that's what I believe it's all about.

Johngt6, you're confusing the medium with what art is, and coming across as rather elitist while doing it.

A previous poster had it right. Art is something creative that stirs a response. It can be something you see, hear, taste, feel or smell. Close your eyes and open your other senses man.

Huggablehottie...... the question was ....
what is ..... art ...... to you ...
not what is a ... real ... artist ... to you.

I assume you think that real art is only realism. [drawings and paintings]

that makes me assume you don't think music is art?
or writing is art? etc. through a thousand mediums.
[hmmmmmmm? I hope you can expand your ideas a bit]

I'd have to say art is the reflection of the soul, or at least a small expression of it that the body can't do. To me it's something that you can't explain through words or gestures or even peices of writing, its a gradual expression throughout your life.

I developed a simple criterion to determine what is art many years ago in an essay I wrote. I'll try to remember it. If the piece answers 'yes' to all, then it is art. Whether or not it is aesthetically pleasing is irrelevant, as is skill level. Something skillful is talent, not necessarily art. Although most art involves some degree of talent, it is not a prerequisite for art. Talent can be learned. Creativity and art is human expression.

1. Was it created by a human? (it can't be a random natural occurrence; a sand dune for example is not art)
2. Was it intended to be experienced; seen, heard, felt, tasted, smelled, that is, shared with other people to experience it? (as opposed to creating something and hiding it in a closet forever)
3. Was it intentional? (a pile bricks that exists because a building was torn-down and the rubble was stored there, is not art. However a pile of bricks that someone created with the intention of creating something, is art)
4. Was it intended to be more than purely functional? (a pencil for example, its only purpose to be a writing instrument, not art. A perfume bottle that was intended to be something more than a container for perfume is art. Even if the purpose was for pure commercial gain – Commercial Art).

I made sure about the last point, because my day job involves developing and creating commercial art.
