OK i got to chime in on this one because i think that ALLOT of the art out there is shit. yes i understand that much of it is conceptual to the artist and the viewer... but a pile of confetti GET real... I'm a blacksmith artist mostly i make knives and i know there is a hell of lot more thought and skill that goes into a properly forged knife than throwing a bucket of paint at a canvas on a wall. my 2 year old daughter can do that for gods sake!!!

Don't confuse talent with art. You may be a very talented blacksmith, but talent is just talent, it is not a prerequisite for art. Art is an expression. Another way humans communicate if you will. Nor is 'esthetically pleasing' a prerequisite. Furthermore talent is something taught and learned. Art involves manifesting something in your mind for the world to experience. It has nothing to do with skill level and talent. A pizza maker who flips around the raw dough is also talented. Is a pizza art? No, because its form and purpose is pure function, to hold sauce and cheese and easy to eat. See Criteria 4. Now if the pizza took on a form that was something besides just a doughy disc to hold and cook ingredients on, then it would be art.

Form follows function. But if the form doesn't follow function, like a fancy perfume bottle, then it must be art. A bucket is a bucket, but if the bucket became something else (intentionally warped and coloured) as well as being a bucket, then it is art.

Who cares if you think the bucket is silly? It has no bearing on whether or not the bucket is art. Others may see something else in it. And if nobody does, then the artist still did and maybe in 1000 years somebody will see something in it.

You may say Pollock had zero talent for throwing paint at a canvas. But guess what? He was the first to do it. You didn't think of it, neither did I. To think it took humans 100,000+ years until someone thought about doing that. Pollack was brilliant for that! And he was a talented painter as well; he's just not famous for those paintings. But he could paint like Bateman if he wanted. So could Picasso and many others. In fact anyone can take a course and learn techniques and paint like Bateman with some practice. That is talent. Pollack, Picasso, Dali etc just didn't see anything creative about painting something the same way it appears in real life. Just look at photos of a wolf if you want to see exactly what a wolf looks like. It's boring and says nothing. That's why critics don't like Bateman. It's high school art class painting.

One of the most valuable things art does for society, is it marks a point in our social awareness. That is, art historians can look at an art piece from the past and determine many things from that time. We can determine what was revered, what was reviled, what values, fears, pleasure etc that that society represented.

If I was an Art Historian in the future and I had to analyze this time through our art; I would look at the last quarter of the 20c and beginning of the 21c and say, "modern western society possessed very little creative and abstract thought, they valued function, and were overly concerned with esthetics and beauty, they were, for the most part, shallow and scientific in their thinking. For all the "thinking out of the box" talk, they were very much in the box and couldn't see past the walls."

Criteria for art.

1. Was it created by a human? (it can't be a random natural occurrence; a sand dune for example is not art)
2. Was it intended to be experienced; seen, heard, felt, tasted, smelled, that is, shared with other people to experience it? (as opposed to creating something and hiding it in a closet forever)
3. Was it intentional? (a pile bricks that exists because a building was torn-down and the rubble was stored there, is not art. However a pile of bricks that someone created with the intention of creating something, is art)
4. Was it intended to be more than purely functional? (a pencil for example, its only purpose to be a writing instrument, not art. A perfume bottle that was intended to be something more than a container for perfume is art. Even if the purpose was for pure commercial gain – Commercial Art).

OK well i forgot to mention that there is a museum in Tennessee that deals with the hand made knife as ART and you as a commercial artist and a I'm assuming educated one should know that

a story about paint on a canvas one of my favs... there was a artist from NY don't ask his name i don't know who was totally over looked by the art community for his realistic pantings...
he got really fed up with the whole ART seen uppity socialite snobs!!! his revenge he gave his GF a enema with watter soluble paint had her squat over a canvas and let it rip......guess what he started selling paintings......so i guess if YOU want a piece of shit on your wall ill shit in a shoe box for ya and you can sling it where you want

so then would a sculpture of a 5 foot butterfly made of steel be art....seems the local art galleries around me think so but maby they don't have a refined taste as you

reason i make knives primarily because i can make 1000 bucks off of one knife and have it out of my shop in less than a week

whereas the butterfly took me 5 weeks to do and it still hasent sold

and if there is any doubt to if blacksmithing is a art or not just look at ABANA
Artist Blacksmith Assn of North America

and as far as the pencil comment being art... ever seen any hand made pens???

To me, art is simply inspiration. If give me the ability to think, create, gives me the imagination and thought of what I want my artwork to look like. It's like this, you want whatever it is that you are doing, to look its best, be grand, look awesome, whatever. Simply you want to give it life and a meaning. Whatever that may be. And you are passionate about whatever will come of it. Art to me is pretty awesome! If you have a talent, use it!

art these days, so called modern art, is adult people pretending to paint like little kids... I wish it was a little bit like before, more effort in their work and actually seeing what it is they have painted

The fact that art manages to sometimes elicit a "negative" response is proof enough that it is art. It's not meant to make everyone happy, it is however meant to elicit some kind of response. e.g. I'm not too thrilled by Picasso ... does this make him less of an artist? I don't think so. mho.

Art to me is beauty.
Art is emotion.
Art is reality of life whether consciousness or unconsciousness.
Art is happiness it is happiness of being involved and the fullfillment of creating something.
Art makes you feel good it makes others feel good or sad depending upon the work.
The happiness of seeing a smile a pleasant scene the reality of war,
It can be sensual and perfuming the senses with delight.
and colours pervae the eye with their majestic beauty.
It is sensitive, relaxing, exciting, my therapy.
Physics can be art, as they create from natural resources, wonders or woes,
A dressmaker or taylor is creative as they create lovely clothes.
No one has the manotoomy on art,
and here ends my little peom.

Personally i think if a person cannot draw or paint at all,its a bit of a con to call yourself a painter. Alot of modern art is about ideas. Alot is very good, and the artists are good at drawing and painting.
If some fool is willing to pay an enormous amout for something like a pair of knickers on a washing line just to look cool thats their buisness, all the fool them. Personally i like to take pride in my work and admire artists with talent who work hard at it. Put alot of thought and skill into their work. This type of work is inspirtational and long lasting, You only have to look at history to see an example of this.

You know...I cant exactly say what art is to me..I mean I cant seem to explain it. I am an artist as well and am currently drawing faeries. I am framiliar with Brian Froud, his art is so enchanting. Im also a huge fan of Lois Royo. I am a very limited artist and am trying very hard to let myself step out of my comfort zone. Any suggestions to help me do that?

I as a Blacksmith/knife maker have read allot of books written by other knife makers and blacksmiths artists on technique's and possess .
The best way to get you out of your "comfort zone"... play with your medium ALOT find your own style don't try and copy someone else's work . your style will start to emerge as you gain more experience and confidence in your medium. Then your style will be as distinctive as your own hand writing

I think anything that moves you or makes you think is art. The tool and the art are just like the yin and yang, you can't have one without the other, so anything(even natural occurances)can be art if they move you. For example-- a bird flying is what inspired man to fly himself. The art here being the inspiration itself.

I see art as a personal projection of reality, transformed by the soul, emotion, intellect, and talent of the artist, and not done with the intent of making money or getting fame. Those things may follow afterwards, but in the true artistic moment of creation they do not exist (in it's purest form).

At it's best, it's the artist alone with his medium (or in a group effort, like a band) and completely lost in the process of creation. The world ceases to exist, for that brief moment, and the art is done for his or her benefit - not anyone elses.

That can be expressed in a wide variety of mediums, but I believe the magic of the moment of creation is a constant in the best art.

I think the purest artists are those that almost awake to find their art revealed to them, after losing themselves in the process totally.

montreal, i think thats one of the best answers i have ever heard, but i think it goes one step beyond that......

i don't think that it is enough to merely create...in any form. i think it also has to have the ability to touch and evoke emotion, be it negative or positive.

i and probably many others have often gazed at visual art, read books, listened to music, or watched a performance that left me cold. neither the creation, nor any technical ability in the execution alone can elevate anyone's creation to the status of art in my eyes.

but again it is a purely subjective opinion, because without a doubt almost everything that is created artistically has the ability to touch someone....

Art is reality as we see it and everyone,s reality is different, different artists reflect this. Art can bring out the inner subconscius world. It can reflect our hurt, anger, love, happiness, despair, confusion, beauty, injustice, art reflects our experience of living and our thoughts about one another and the world in general.

Art to me is a form of expression, it is a way I release my feelings. Sometimes you can see my feelings in the art long after it was created.

I agree with wrye...

Art is communication. In terms of my own work, I like to think of myself as a translator. I take what I see and think and translate those things through a chosen medium, be it pen and ink, charcoal, clay...

I tell my students that, as we work with a material and learn about it's characteristics, we are ultimately building a vocabulary of marks, forms, color, etc. with which we use to create the stories we want tell.

My own tale doesn't have to be representational, overt or even understandable to the general public for it to be successful. I am my own gauge as to it's success or failure.

Then again, I've always been fond of Andy Warhol's statement:

"Don't think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide whether it's good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they're deciding, make even more art"

Whatever works, right?

i agree w/superfun guy,

art is based in INSPIRATION, or INSTINCT...

the act of choice in any endeavor, from setting a table, to setting one's
hair, relies on the mysterious "inspiration" of the creator...

so often we hear the phrase:"so artfully done"...

from the medical world, to the financial world, it is the "yin and yang" of art and
science combined....

science and facts are the lynchpin of progress....

art, is what makes us sing....

jacqueline...

When I create art for me and not because someone has paid me to it is an expression and outlet for emotions. If I can look at something I've created and be satisfied that I've communicated an emotion then I'm satisfied. If someone else looks at what I've done and it receives and emotional reaction then that's icing on the cake.

Trey, I beg to differ on your "pencil" comment. A pencil is certainly a means to create art...so is chaulk, so is pastel, so are pencil crayons even.

"Art is very powerful because it captures emotion for all time.
A work of Greek drama is as moving today as a work by Shakespeare or Tarkovsky.
Art transcends style and times. "

Spot On! Totally!

It's the timelessness of it, yet it speaks of a time. That emotion, Idea for that time. And it's that moment in time that is crucial in the making of that emotion or Idea...

Making sense???
