| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 2/28/2008 8:34:20 PM | | I liked just being able to go to school and hang with my friends at recess, then go to someone's house and have an adventure. There was none of this working 8 hours a day business and none of this trying to find someone to date that's good looking, honest, etc etc. You didn't need to worry about that for a long while. You just had to worry about being a kid. That being said, as I got older I did enjoy the responsibilities of being older. I like working now and driving and being able to drink and get tattoos/piercings. Dating is difficult but who said it would be easy? Sometimes I'd like to go back to being a kid for just a day to relax and not have to think about things that are going on now. But eventually I'd have to come back to the now and deal with things again. | |

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 2/28/2008 9:41:38 PM | I miss playing in the rain (rain water is so damn cold here). I miss playing anything my friends and I can think of like sticks, stones, cans or whatever because there was no computer or Nintendo when I was growing up. I miss the time I can ride my bike without wearing helmet. I miss the peanut butter sandwich at school. I sometimes miss the singing of national anthem every school day.
I miss the wooden stick my mother used because I was stubborn I miss pushing the boy who had a crush on me and likewise. And what I miss the most is sleeping 10 hours or more without even waking up to pee.

playing in the ditches, looking for frog eggs, putting them in a jar till they hatched or stank so bad you had to toss them out finding a salamander by chance.......way cooler than frogs
I spent hours hunting frogs, toads and salamanders. I used to hunt for salamanders under our house, lifting bits of wood and feeling around under them in the dark for the telltale cold of a little salamander body. I once gathered up thousands of frog eggs so I could watch them hatch, and when they did my mom freaked out and told me to "get rid of those damned things". So I thought I'd put them in this clear pool that flooded every year. That way I could watch them as they slowly developed into frogs!
The pool was empty the next day. Guess the birds had a feast
I miss: Following the hay machine looking for mice nests. Pretending we were horses and just running all over the place. Believing the grove in the middle of our field was full of faeries living in the ferns. Hunting gophers with my black lab. Hearing my mom call me in for dinner. Pajamas with feet. Knowing that if a tooth fell out I'd get money for it and another would grow in. My dad teaching me to fish. Believing in Santa. Bringing home good report cards. School plays. Ignorance of my own mortality.

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 2/29/2008 3:03:32 PM | ^^^ reading those two stories with collecting critters, brought a memory to light. Back in Ontario where I first learnt to fish, we, well, I use to use mice as live bait for largemouth bass. Instead of trying to catch wild ones, I came up with the brilliant idea of raising white mice for my bait. Well, at 11 years old no one ever told me about the sexual needs of mices . I do know that one Friday before I left for a weekend fishing trip, I had over 60 of the little white guys. When I came home Sunday, notta one. I don't know why, but my mother seem to be the person that found them one by one, throughout the house. Some alive, and others, not so much.
I miss seeing my mother's face when she first discovered some of my different types of friends, bait, pets, or whatever in my little hiding spots. I also miss the distinct scream of her's.

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 2/29/2008 11:12:16 PM | Oh what a great question! There is so much that was good way back then (oh I sound like an old timer!). There are good things now too - but "good" was different back then. I miss waking up Christmas morning. Running (and I mean FAST) out of the school door on the last day of school. I miss being able to walk over to a friend's house to see if they could come out to play - now it's expected that we call first before showing up on their door step. I miss playing outside on a hot summer night - trying to get in as much fun as possible before having to go into bed. Oh and I miss my father - he died almost 5 years ago. I miss summer vacations - I didn't have to pay for them back then. But today I have the wonderful memories and the gratitude for having had such good times when I was a child. Thanks Trout48 for bringing back the memories! | |

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 3/1/2008 1:49:18 AM | the practical jokes the poaching trout from the mill pond the real friends without an agenda mud wresting with the girls before they knew they were different... and skinny dipping in the creeks driving cars and motor cycles without a license and when caught getting a spanking from the cop rather than a trial the cop walking us home when we were drunk from a beer and not telling the stories of our parents and grandparents on how it was int their old days the endless skies in the Hindukush and Pamirs Mountains, the horse, camel and yak caravans to find and see the Marco polo sheep and the snow leopards...adventures of the tales of 1001 nights of a culture and people now destroyed by world politics and war. | |

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 3/1/2008 8:28:22 AM | ^^^^ Good catch Draxilla!
Back on topic:
Learning how to swim
Snorkeling in the lake shallows, sneaking up on suckers and once even a Lake Trout.
Having fun with a "potato gun" - straight piece of pipe, a piece of broom handle and supply of raw potatoes. No living targets were selected.
Going to the movie matinees on Saturday afternoon with friends, admission a mere 25 cents. I remember seeing newsreels too, don't miss them though.
Getting a Kodak camera for my 9th birthday. Photography is still a passion for me.
Coming home from school and chiseling out a mighty snow fortress from a huge pile of packed snow a bull-dozer made in clearing our back yard one winter. Took about 2 weeks to complete.
I don't remember my age for the following, might have been a year or two beyond 11, but maybe not. Being offered the opportunity to stay out at the lake all by myself. I was proud to be considered so responsible and mature. There was good supply of gasoline and oil for the outboard motor, lots of fishing tackle, great weather and good fishing. Yeah, I made my own meals and did the dishes... I ate a lot of Lake Trout. Other than the mid-week check by parents to make sure all was well I never saw another person. No worries, no life jacket, no people, nothing. Talk about freedom and care-free abandon. That week was certainly one of the biggest highlights of my childhood and was totally forgotten until this thread reminded me. Thank you!

judge not in haste
not every one grew up in your sandbox; the world is slightly larger than that. 90 cc kids trail bike are not street legal... we also had older siblings who would take out a car for a spin, and yeah sure we had a brew before age ten and a drag on a cigar... so what, bad ass kid...??? lol heck I wouldn't have wanted to have missed it and really I wish many kids today would have it that good, too bad there are so many uptight ass parents lol
Doesn't mean one does not know (learn) the difference between right and wrong, does it?

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 3/2/2008 7:59:53 AM | Playing Go… Go… Go… STOP at 9:30 at night cause we could.
What time is it Mr. Wolf… 1 o’clock What time is it Mr. Wolf… 2 o’clock ………. Does anyone remember?
Learning how to ride a two wheel bike by walking to the top of a hill then, peddling madly down it. Hopefully, you made it to the bottom in one piece…
Running around all summer in bare feet on hot, pebbly asphalt until September and then the agony of having to go to Army and Navy to buy those new “School shoes”
My platform tree house built waaaaaayyy up on the top of a huge cedar tree. I could see everything that was going on in the neighborhood from up there….
My dad and I making a skateboard for me out of a piece of curved plywood and an old metal roller skate….
Making a homemade boomerang and then trying to teach myself how to throw it.
My dad making Root Beer Floats with A&W Root beer bought in the big glass jugs, (it tasted SO different and better in those days)
My mom using a sanding block on the oil stove to clean it. Then, putting vegetable oil on it, and pouring homemade buttermilk pancake batter right on top of the stove. MMMMMmmmm, THE best pancakes in the world…..
My dad waking me up at 3 am on a Saturday morning to go fishing with him on the banks of the Fraser River. He and I eating honey and peanut butter sandwich’s, drinking coffee, and watching the sun come up as we were fishing, and, 9 times out of 10, never catching anything. It was all about being together and the serenity of the moment….
Slinking down the hallway on my hands and knees wwwaayy past my bedtime to watch Red Skelton, and getting caught by my mom when I started to laugh my head off…
Ed Sullivan on Sunday at 8pm followed by Bonanza at 9…. Mom can I stay up PLLEEEAAASSEEE
I think about my childhood and the memories start to FLOOD back (and that’s a good thing)
I think I need a hug…..**sniff**

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 3/2/2008 8:27:52 AM | It's been a long time since I've thought about being a kid.......hmmmm
going to the local candy store, with my basset hound...and he'd howl outside the door, until we came out, so the druggist would give us all our candy for free.
Popsicles being 7 cents.
Going to Birch Bay all summer and hanging out at the race track.
Driving golf carts, when no one was looking.
When we got out swimming pool...that was cool.
Canoing up Indian Arm and then not being able to get back home, because the water was too rough....so we had to hitch hike in the water.
Driving topless all the way across Canada, after graduating college. (spending the entire summer camping and doing hostels...all over our wonderful country)
Playing in bare feet and splashing in puddles.
ahhhh, thanks for the memories......

| What do you miss the most about being a kid again Posted: 3/2/2008 8:47:16 AM | driving cars and motor cycles without a license and when caught getting a spanking from the cop rather than a trial the cop walking us home when we were drunk from a beer and not telling
Under age 11, come on ML1 my sandbox has seen a lot of catshit, but I find that one hard to scratch a cover over, and yes we all had mini bikes or Tiger cycles we toodled on, trying to be evil Knieval at a young age, but the cops letting you drive on the road and doing virtually nothing about it?, don't try to kick sand at me because you didn't actually read the OP's original post. If I'm wrong, who cares, but don't take a dump in my sandbox, unless you want it tossed back.
And no offence meant or taken, after all it's only a F****n forum on the internet.

And no offence meant or taken none taken or intended on my part either, all friendly and good, and ..no dumping in sand boxes intended... we all take things too much verbatim at times... you made me think back, thanks ...and heck yup we did some real fun stuff, different time and different place and yeah the cop walking us home was around 13, who is counting...??? ...sheesh feel guilty again having a beer then was more like 1/3 of a can .. . nothing like what I've been seeing here in the past 20 year or so...lol maybe we sit at a pub, BS and swap stories some day....
