I try so hard to teach my kids that we are all the same under the skin color...but how can I fight the racism they experience everyday?..They are white...they go to mostly black schools...they try to learn & do right..while the black kids get away with acting however they want & causing constant disruptions....they are picked on constantly...I've already had 2 attacked for nothing...just because they are white...one of my sons was standing talking to friends...when 5 black strangers threw him to the ground & began kicking him...because he is white...my other son was taunted to fight for months on the bus by several of them...why?...because he is white & has long hair...he would come home & say mom I don't know what to do...I'm not doing anything to them...he finally had to bust one in the nose to get them to leave him alone...
My neighborhood used to be really nice...now there are little gangs of them roaming around starting trouble....tearing stuff up...twice now we've had one of them bring a loaded gun to school...
I recently got through reading Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl..an autobiography written in the 1850's...it infuriated me...made me want to go back & help every slave that ever lived..
I'm from the South & I know for a fact my family used to own slaves...I've been to the plantation...I've seen the old slave houses...I think it's horrible...but it's not my fault...I didn't do it....I would never choose to do it...so why should we have to pay for it...why should we be hated for what our ancestors did?...are they not intelligent enough to realise this?....they aren't living as slaves now...they have all the opportunities we have & then some...& quite honestly I'm sick of the idea that I should feel guilty for something that I didn't do...& worrying about the safety of my children simply because they are white...my words sound hollow, when I say respect everyone..judge a person for what is in their heart...when they have to constantly put up with crap & have only been able to make a few intelligent black friends...no matter how hard they try...
now I'd like to add that I myself went to a predominantly black school...I was the only white girl on the bus...I was very shy back then...I was able to make 2 black friends on my bus...that's it...no matter how hard I tried...& if it hadn't been for them protecting me, I would have gotten my butt kicked every day....just because I was white....did I deserve this because of what my ancestors did...of course not...
I am also part American Indian & part Scottish....do I think I deserve something because of what was done to them?...Of course not...why don't ya'll quit trying to get a handout & the respect you think is automatically owed to you without you doing anything to deserve it?...If you want payback, then maybe it should come from Africa, the place that sold your ancestors to begin with...
I am so sick of the reverse racism...yet I constantly try to teach my children that we are all created equal...that that is part of what God wants us to learn...that we are all the same...no matter what we look like....but you guys make it really hard... | |

Well your first mistake was sending them to a black school. I find it odd that the black kids would laugh at your kids because they are white? The black kids should be laughing at themselves if they looked in the mirror and saw what they looked like. And it doesn't surprise em that they ganged up on your kid 5 to 1, seldom do they have the courage to fight 1 on 1. I suggest you get your kids out of there and put them in a school with white kids where the students actually are interested in learning. | |

Why do I think this should be in the politics forum?
Because politics has been the work horse for social change and reform. Did we abolish slavery in the US because of science? No we didn't. Back then many people actually believed that people of different races were also a different spicies. (As unbelievable as that idea is to me, they did believe that.)
Did Philosophy have an impact on racism? No, not at all. We had to enact political reform to force people to change. As much as we hate being told what to do, politics had to rear it's ugly head and save us from ourselves.
As long as racism, and yes I agree it is still with us, is shoved into the background, which is what happens when you discus it in a forum that has no power, it won't change. (This forum has no power for this topic only because it is not relevant to the subject.)
You want change? Put the discussion where it will do some good. Don't sit around and talk about it in a safe ineffective place where everyone pretty much feels the same, get out and do something about it. Talk about it in politics where others may disagree with you. Martin Luther King Jr and the many great leaders who made us open our eyes didn't sit and complain in their cozy homes, they went to the places that would make a difference. They stood firm, they spoke with honesty, truth and the moral dignity that we should afford one another, no matter who we are. They were leaders, they were heros!

Seldom does anyone have the nerve to fight one on one; doesn't matter if it's a gang of kids (regardless of race or colour) or a gang of klansmen.
Being that I went to a white school (in rural Canada, that's pretty much all you'll get) and was bullied by groups of white kids - sometimes...quite often in groups larger than five - I can tell you that cowardice has nothing to do with skin colour and to believe otherwise shows how little you understand human interaction at the conflict level. | |

Posted: 11/20/2007 4:37:00 PM | I try to only imagine a world without any racial biased whatsoever. Not being a history buff, I do respect the trials and tribulations it took to get to this point. However, I live in the now, a tangible result of that history. I simply decide to create new moments in history by treating all those I socialize with or encounter with respect and understanding regardless of race, gender, creed, class, etc. That is my contribution. Small, relative to the whole, and hopefully infectious.
I like to think I have gone beyond the issue of race. Maybe because I was fortunate enough to have grown up in a diverse community where we acknowledged each other based on our personality. But, unfortunately, my unbiased approach is often criticized purely because of my appearance. That's gonna happen. Fine. Fortunately, a lot of people I know have transcended the race issue and are now moving forward on the human one.
The OP indicated that this is not just a white or black issue. Of course, and I agree. Using the terms 'black' and 'white' are simply examples of the extremes in a color spectrum. The racial supremacy issue affects all races, and history has proved that many societies of races have had a whack at supremacy. History has proven unkindly to billions of individuals. On the other hand, it has proven to be quite abundant for numerous other individuals, race notwithstanding.
I do empathize with the participants of history. It's a shame individuals have suffered. I have experienced countless moments of suffering. I understand. However, I am learning from the past, from what I have experienced, and I am moving forward away from that past and into the future where we belong.
I do take responsibility for my actions. But, I would never take individual responsibility for the ill will or accomplishments of those individuals that preceded me. I don't know them. They don't know me. I am simply responding to the world they created. I would not have designed it in its present form, though I do appreciate much of what it has to offer even though I could have made better use of opportunity now that I think about it. I don't dwell on it. I'd rather move on away from the shortcomings of history after learning from it.
Taking priority in humanity regardless of race, gender, creed, class, etc is important to me. Color cannot be an issue when it comes to those I socialize, work, or even find distasteful. It's the personality that matters most, to me. Requirements may be different for others. I dunno. I'm just not on board with racial preferences, though the discussion of racial supremacy and bias is an important one to discuss... as educated concerned members of society, of course.
Please note, I say all this for the sake of brevity as I am indeed aware that there are many nuances and details to cover that I am unable to cover (much having been covered by so many individuals in this thread). And I only speak from my point of view. A single person in a sea of opinions. Ain't it grand.

No, I was pointing out that they have the same original ancestors as everyone else, Africans (can't ya just feel the colour flowing through your veins?)
Sending them there would be effective because the only reason their fear of colour hasn't already got them cowering in the basement is, like all punks, they can only have "courage" when they can't be met with equal numbers.
