Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet?

According to this on-line test, there are no dog breeds with which I am compatible; yet, I am Dr. Doolittlette, a very good and competent dog owner, and also good with other peoples' dogs. Go figure?
When I was 20 years old I took a test at a job center that said I should be a long haul truck driver because I like to travel and like to spend time on my own. If you knew me, you'd realize that's pretty hilarious. I do like to travel, and I'm a great reader and introspective person, but I work with people, supervise around a hundred every day, and am always surrounded by them. Somehow I've managed to survive and even be fairly happy and successful with that environment. :)

I did a little searching myself, out of curiousity. Some of the dogs recommended for family dogs I expected, like Golden Retrievers and Labrador Retrievers. But on some lists there were types of boxers and bulls. I'd just be careful for what reasons those breeds were recommended, and be careful to get just the type of dog recommended. A great family dog is a great thing; a dog that can go off, snap, etc., when a kid gets rambunctious is scary.

I have heard of a fair amt of problems with labs over the past 10 yrs; & there is a VERY aggressive lab in my neighborhood. To the point where I have not been walking my dogs yet this yr- they run around the back yard. Prob should take them up to the lake- if it drys out.
Find a reputable breeder -- of any breed- make sure the dogs have been health tested & have correct temperment; socialize & obedience train your dog.. & dont let the kids tease or abuse the dog either.

by the way- the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of England has always been called the "nanny".. & it is a bull breed.. & from what I have been told; loves kids

I have standard schnauzers have never had or wanted a lab, golden or any bull breed

This runs contrary to the known qualities and reputation of the breed. Labs are used as guide and service dogs, in fact, are the first choice for dogs who do such work. This dog may be a mixed breed, has been or is being abused, or there may be another reason. In anycase, after years and years, generations, of this breed being the most popular breed among families in the US and Britain, it is more likely that this particular dog is the exception and not the rule.

full bred, is not being abused, has been obedience trained b/c the man has put him in a sit/stay when I used to walk my dogs past him. He would bark & snarl & show his teeth & try to "get us" by lunging at us. Has done it when I have walked by alone. therefore I dont walk my dogs in my neighborhood anymore.
Popular breed & overbred IMO- look in the newspaper there are always lab puppies for sale as well as other popular & now rare breeds.

In all fairness, therefore, it must be noted that:

¦Any dog, treated harshly or trained to attack, may bite a person. Any dog can be turned into a dangerous dog. The owner or handler most often is responsible for making a dog into something dangerous.
¦An irresponsible owner or dog handler might create a situation that places another person in danger by a dog, without the dog itself being dangerous, as in the case of the Pomeranian that killed the infant
¦Any individual dog may be a good, loving pet, even though its breed is considered to be potentially dangerous. A responsible owner can win the love and respect of a dog, no matter its breed. One cannot look at an individual dog, recognize its breed, and then state whether or not it is going to attack.

http://www.americanhumane.org/about-us/newsroom/fact-sheets/dog-bites.html

Breed-specific legislation
These alarming statistics have caused many communities across the country to enact breed-specific legislation that prohibits people from owning some breeds of dogs, such as pit bulls. American Humane understands that any breed of dog can bite, and as such, believes that breed-specific legislation does not effectively protect the community from dangerous animals. Legislation banning particular breeds can unnecessarily discriminate against dogs that are not dangerous, and does little to protect the community from dog bite incidents. Such legislation can often have unintended consequences, such as black market interest, indiscriminant breeding practices, and subsequent overpopulation issues. Additionally, there can be confusion when dealing with "mixed-breed" dogs, which can make legislation difficult to enforce. Therefore, American Humane supports local legislation to protect communities from dangerous animals, but does not advocate laws that target specific breeds of dogs.

^^^Possibly poorly bred or some other reason. I had a roommate who is a guide dog trainer. They used only labradors and German shepards. Sometimes the labs were a mixed breed. Always the puppies would be raised for the first year in special foster homes by trained people, and the dogs go through personality screening before being used for service. I'm sure there are those who are not suitable, but, in general, it is known as an easily trainable animal with a very high threshold for frustration and a very easy going temperment, as well as one of the most highly intelligent breeds.

As I look at the title of this thread, a pitbull as a pet, that should lend some clarity to the debate. A pet. Dare I run over to my dictionary and look up the definition of pet?
Dope Boyz get pitties to protect the goods.
Some people get pits for fighting and making money.
If that dog is a pet, they are only going to be exposed to love and caring.
Babies and animals have no voice and they need people that care to speak up for them when they are being mistreated.

i absolutely would date a guy with pits and i have.... my ex and i had 2 pits (1 who was content laying on the couch all day and a great gaurd dog, and the other that was a hyper big baby-fullblooded american red nose devil known more for being violent but definately wasn't. and then those 2 had puppies which aside from watching a cow give birth was the grossest thing i've ever seen)

my parents also own 2 pitbull/boxer dogs (1's my mom's the other is actually my brother's) they r the sweetest and best behaved dogs i have ever seen. we have NEVER had problems with them and in fact my mom's dog is a major scaridy cat. my brother's dog is a beautiful white and brindle. both r great around my 7mo old daughter who likes to pull their ears and grab their faces.

any dog can b taught to b mean, they r just more know bcuz of monsters who misstreat these beautiful animals and train them to fight (because of the lockjaw). when u love and take care of an animal they can b harmless. dogs are man's best friend, i think more ppl need to b dog's best friend and treat them better.

*Remember dogs smell fear and sense danger, so be cautious around any animal u don't know and teach ur children the same and maybe less "bites and accidents" won't happen. too many children run up 2 and start trying to pet dogs that get scared because they feel threatened and bite. not always the dog's fault.*

u shouldn't base a relationship on what animal they have as a pet (except those who are allergic or own a cat or something like that) or just because u hear pits r dangerous. pits r beautiful and should NOT b banned!!!! those who train them to fight and misstreat them should b arrested, beatened and treated like the animals they abused.

much love,
tabby

guide dogs are very well bred & care is taken that they are highly socialized & exposed to a lot so nothing bothers them

labs are #7 in intelligence on this list
http://www.petmedsonline.org/top-10-smartest-dogs-in-the-world.html

and MY BREED, standard schnauzers- the dog with the "human brain" is not listed (maybe b/c we dont want them too popular & they are NOT for everyone )

Well, 1,2 and 3 come as no surpise. Familiar with those breeds. 4,5,&6 are a surprise. I would have thought, from observation, that golden retrievers are a bit less intelligent than labs...but anyway...all I know is labs are one of the smarter breeds and they are, at least with the company my friend works for, a company that supplies guide dogs nationally and internationally, one of the most common dogs they use. About equally, labs and shepards.

With those types of dogs the type of training they receive as puppies plays a big role when you think about how they will behave as fully grown dogs. A lot of my friends have pitbulls and they are friendlier than most cats.

Well granted I don't know much about pit bulls but I would say that the owner has more to do with whether or not the dog becomes violent than the dog.
If someone with violent and control tendencies raises a dog that may have some predestined genetic markers than you have a violent dog.
It's hard to know for sure what came first the chicken or the egg .

i dont think its the breed that is bad, its the people that own them. i have a american bulldog ( male ) and he is the friendliest dog, well as long as u dont mean its master harm. i would feel more then comfortable leaving my dog with a child

I have finally gotten to the exasperation that I correct people: He is NOT a ROCKWEILER, he is ROTTWEILER named after a city in Germany.
I am certain that if anyone tried to attack me, he would react defensively.
However, today, a man got off the bus, and at first Riley lurched towards the man until I told him to stop and apologized.
All was good. No negative interactions.
Rotties are also classified as viscious breeds. If you raise a dog correctly, I am a firm believer that they will be nice dogs.
If you could smell this dog's farts, they are probably worse than any bite that he could inflict. He sets off some major stink bombs! Flatulence Man is pretty powerful. But he is my dog, and I love him to the utmost!
I will reiterate that I think Michael Vick is an absolute piece of garbage that got off with a very light sentence for his crimes.

Poor Vinnie that was at the shelter at which I used to volunteer was completely hostile towards men. I would take him outside because he trusted me not to beat him, after having been abused by a man or men.
I am certainly not anti-men, but I am definitely anti-abuser.

^^^^ gota agree with that one. Dogs lick their own azzes

<div class="quote"> No I would not! I have a 3 lb. chihuahua and a shih tzu. Not a good mix!

That's too funny! Back when I had my Pitt (around 50lb), a buddy of mine had a Yorkie (3-4lb) and one day when they came over, Goldie (yorkie, female) jumped up on a chair while Luthor (Pitt, male) was waking up. From the side it looked like Goldie was trying to dive down Luthor's throat as he yawned. After she got past the "OMG this dog is huge!" stage, they would play together in the yard. At times I'd tease him and say, "Goldie's here!" his eyes would light up and he'd start looking for her outside, running from the door too the window and back again. Just because a Pitt is so much bigger than your dog doesn't mean they wont be friends given the oppertunity.

I have four dogs. One is part rottie, one a lab mix, and two chihuahua mix. I also have Bezelbub - absolutely meanest cat you have ever met do having been abused horribly as a kitten. My dogs are afraid of him as is every dog in the neighborhood.

I have loved and owned three pitbulls. They are great. They are like everything else in life - treat it well and you will get goodness. Treat it meanly and you will find it returned.

I am sorry, but it is like all the domestic battery cases (sorry, guys, I am going to pick on you here, but woman are just as capable of this). A lot of men hit their wives or girlfriends, sometimes these same women are killed. Should we get rid of men due the propensity of them committing violence?

I love pit bulls!they are great dogs and if loved and trained enough they are one of the most loyal pets!.There other breeds of dogs who are just as aggressive but they don't get all the bad reputation as the pit bulls!I've come accross some very cross dogs of a supposed family kind of dog!,but they were just as mean as a junk yard dog!

Any predjudice exists , and is perpetuated by ignorance - and this is one of 'em .

Scary dogs - with the exception of some very inbred individuals - are a product of their environment and the people who raise them . It has far less to do with what particular breed the dog might be .

I've worked with animals professionally for a long time . Granted they're much smaller - but I've met a couple chihuahuas that would readily bite without warning - and mean it . Along with some poodles, a boxer ot two , and assorted others - even a golden retreiver - known for being big teddy bears. I've also met pit bulls , dobies , rotties , and shepherds that were absolute sweeties , and showed no signs of aggression except towards home intruders !

Some folks make their dogs mean on purpose , with training and conditioning , and then use them to bolster their own very poor self image . " Look at ME , and my nasty 'ole dog !!! - who will only listen to ME "

Just like the humans you might date - there are mean ones , and nice ones. It's up to us to find out which it is BEFORE we get involved !

I am the owner of a vicious Rottweiler. Neighborhood bully. He is actually a gentle giant am I am flattered because he is such a great dog.
My dog was purchased to be a drug guard dog, but to his good fortune the houshold got arrested a few days later.
Only with people I know, when I let the dog loose I command, Attack!" He doesn't know what that means.
I was conversing with a good friend and pointed and said, "Attack!" My dog ran up to him and licked his fingertips.
When we rode together to the corner restaurant, everyone wanted to come out and say hello to him. I truly do have a tremendous dog. I just wish he were more obedient because he can never be a therapy dog until he learns to listen. He is good with children, people, cats, other dogs, but he just only listens when he wants to.
I guess I am a bit goofy, because I have been chased/attacked by two German Shepherds and also bitten by two dogs (matching scars on each ankle) and I still love them. I have never been bitten by a pitbull though, but did get a couple of kisses from one that was very grateful to be treated with love.

a pitbull is just another dog with a bad reputation. i used to have one up until i had to have her put down (couldn't afford the vet bills, she had a tumor the size of my fist on her left leg and her hips gave out at the age of 6), my ex boyfriend had a pure pit and a pit dane mix, and we also shared a pit pup before the break up and move. i wouldn't ever not date a guy that owns a pit...just as long as the pit wasn't trained to attack.

also, when my nephew was little he was bitten by a pit pup that got carried away (my nephew was 4 and the pup was about 3 months old). my mom was turned against pits until she was introduced to mine which was take from an abusive home and given to me only to find out that they're not all mean. my pit was very affectionate...just wasn't animal friendly and that was the old owner's fault.

I worked my way through business school doing door-to-door sales. I encountered literally hundreds of allegedly vicious animals (Rottweilers, Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, Chow-chows, etc.), most of which were subdued by vigorous ear-scratching or playing tug-of-war with their favorite toy (you know it's their favorite because they bring it to you). Only time I got bit was by a @#$% weiner dog, which caused serious damage to my dignity but little else. The main thing about dog attacks is that once an animal reaches a critical mass (about 70 lbs or so), they become physically capable of killing smaller humans (notice that most fatal dog attack victims are petite women or children, and the perpetrator is never a Shih Tzu), if infinitessimally likely to actually do so. Humans or honey bees are far more likely to kill someone than any breed of dog.
