Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet?

i had a male yellow lab.best and smartest dog i ever owned........he wasnt the friendliest lab around...but outside he was fine.....in the house however......you had better live there or else..he did NOT like company......even the neighbors in the other half the house...who he knew his entire life......were growled at when they came over.

on the other hand..my daughter has a rather large male pittbull...........friendliest dog you ever saw....big baby..........and he had it rough as a pup.....pitts dont scare me much.....in fact.the only breed tat i'm a tad leery of are full sized collies..........yes..lassie dogs....most are very friendly....however they are incredibly loyal.........and should you do something that they see as agressive to one of their "family".........they will attack

Yes, I could. Pits are very nice dogs if raised right. I know a guy who is friends with a breeder. His dogs are the sweetest dogs you could hope to meet.

I see no reason not to. Ive known some of the sweetest pits around, worse they would do is lick you to death.
Yes there are some vicious ones, just like any other dog can be vicious if trained to be that way. Most chihuahuas Ive known are mean ankle biting SOBs, but I own one and had a chow too.
Dont blame the dog if its the owner that made them that way. Could tell you a lot about the owner.

no, i wouldn't feel comfortable around someone with a pitbull or a rottie or a doberman, based on personal and general information gathered... or any dog that wasn't well trained, for that matter

my kids are worth more to me than being PC in the matter

it may well be the owner or history of owner's fault for 'making' or breeding a dog to be a certain way... but it doesn't make the bite or savaging any less painful or deadly, no matter who's to blame for it happening

I might date them, but that's it. I have a Pekingese dog, 4 cats, and a horse. My pets should be all he'd ever need. I've been bitten on the face by a dog (not mine) and I'm permanently scarred, so I'm not looking to pair up with anyone who has a dog known for being aggro (even if his isn't). I also don't want my friends to be frightened by any dog associated with me.

Mind you, the dog I was bitten by wasn't a Pitbull, but I've known people who were riding their horses in a provincial forest and were attacked by Pitbulls roaming free. Of course, that is a owner-problem, and I know that the Pitbull ban does punish many dogs for bad owners. But since you apparently "can't ban the deed," you may have envoke a breed-specific ban. It's not about giving every last dog a chance - it's about protecting the public. Yes, sometimes you do have to treat a Pitbull different from a Lab and different from an Akita and different from a Yorkie. People who claim otherwise are disillusioned and divorced from the facts.

The sad fact is the many Pitbull owners have them because they make a statement. I've no objection to meeting up with someone who has a well-trained dog of any breed, but the reality is that a great many Pitbull owners don't fall into that category. That old argument that it's actually the Pitbull owners who are bad doesn't translate well to Pomeranian owners, Lab owners, Shiba Inu owners, etc. It is a description that often fits, unfortunately.

Be well......

So what's your point? ^^^^

Need more animals to look after? Go ahead and create your own distopian "Animal Farm." A dog, 4 cats, and a horse is more than most people can handle already.....

^^ totally agree with message 256! Tho I am not fond of pits, I dont believe in breed specific legislation. It hurts all ethical breeders & owners of good dogs.
Its all about correct breeding & training & temperment. There are certainly pit mixes or other mixes that can & are labelled as pits that are also a problem.

see if you correctly spot the pit bull on this site- you may be surprised http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html

Again, so what? I already have a menagerie of rejected, and often dysfunctional animals that nobody else wanted or was willing to care for, except me. Those that can do it, will do it. Those that can't, will just whine about it.

It's my perogative what types of animals to introduce into my household, if any. Anybody who doesn't like it can hit the road, and best of luck to them in their future endeavours.

Pitbulls aren't the problem. As an owner of ANY pet we have a responsibility to socialize them, teach them and restrain them. Some of the most territorial dogs I have
ever come across was a poodle and a chihuahua. I would definitely trust my sister's pitbull lap dog before I would my own Jack Russell.

Probably not, but then again, I'm a pretty bonafide cat person. I usually don't seem to get along so well with people who are into dogs, so it all works out. I'm currently holding my little kitty in my lap as I type. Cute, huh?

Watcht he sarcasm:

Yes, I would definitely date someone who owns a pit bull. I have already three pets, and if the Pit is well-brought up, had its own nanny and went to a French obedience school, and has O level geography, then he is welcome to my world, together with its owner. My three pets will keep him cheerfully shaking in his boots. I own a crocodile, a Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.

Originally, and all my life, I wanted to own and train my own gladiator-lions, and tiger sharks. They can be the nicest pets around if you train them well. And keep them muzzled and permanently tied up to a post, and drugged to subordination. Same with the West Nile virus and with man-eating wild liechens.

I think anyone who is afraid of pitbulls is either the pits, or what he's saying is bull.

Indeed, I don't mind a pet that needs to be well-bread and well-brought up and well-socialized to keep it from tearing anyone into small bits, at least keep it down to a statistically low enough significant number. It is fun to own a pit bull and take it to the local amusement park. A little gambling, like Russian roulette. If you take a well-trained chihuahua there, and he growls and tears someone's handkerchief apart, people laugh. You don't want people to laugh at your pet. But if you take the best-bred pitbull, and you've spent your entire life training him to behave around people, and still he goes berserk and tears limbs off people (very low statistical probability, but it exists; as much as berserkism can happen to any chihuahua as well) or kills them instantly -- now, that's entertainment, that's why I take my pits to amusement parks. They are real clowns, those pitbuls.

^Awesome post.

Who wouldn't want to own a pet that was specifically breed to be a killing machine? Best of all, I would love my future children to spend as much time as possible in front of a pitbull.

I frequent dog parks daily and see quite an array of different dog breeds. There have been fights sometimes and a few regular canine visitors are just more aggressive than others. Boxers, labs and golden retrievers (shocking, huh?) to me appear to be more apt to start something than pitbulls, dobermans, rottweillers. And then there are those little yappy ones... ehhh... don't get me started.

So would I date someone that had a pitbull? Yes.

A dog is a dog.
The OWNER is usually the problem.

Exactly.

The ones that attack are the ones who's owners think it's fun and enteratining to make them fight other dogs.
My sister has a pittbull pup, and this dog is scared of it's own shadow. We had two mini pomeranians that we recently gave to my sister, and Yeti (the pittbull) cowers in the corner from one of them. He's cool with the bigger one, but the smaller one is barely bigger than a chihuaha and he runs from her. You would think he'd stand his ground considering he's 10 times her size, but he's a timid little thing.

If animals are subjected to abuse and cruelty, they are going to attack without notice., because all they have ever known is violence. If they are in a loving environment they are not likely to attack unless u are doing something to make them feel threatened.

While I would generally agree, the dog that attacked me was known to me. I knew him and socialized with him for 2 years. I reached down to pet him one day and he almost ripped my nose off for no reason whatsoever. This dog was not treated cruelly or inhumanely by its owners. He was always affectionate with me until that day. As a result of the bite, his owners were reported to the health department, and the dog was placed under quarantine.

Now, I wouldn't risk my life by petting him, even though he still lives next door. The law that deals with dog bites is called "scienter." From an insurance standpoint, a dog is allowed one bite. After that, he/she is deemed dangerous, and the dog owners cannot deny their knowledge of his danger after subsequent bites. This dog is no longer covered under the homeowners insurance policy, so subsequent lawsuits will have to be paid for out of the owners's pockets.

Words to live by.

As long as its not a violent pitbull.
My experience is that german shepherds and pitbulls tend to be violent.
Labs on the other hand, most friendly dogs I know.

Omg..this is so embarrassing to admit, but I'm gonna do it. The humility will be good for me.

I posted on this thread when it was just getting started, months ago. I swore I would never date a man with a pitbull and I had very good reasons for not doing so.

It would seem that I now have a pitbull. I took him in about eight weeks ago now. He's a pit-mix; I would say pit and German Shepherd. He's beautiful and very friendly. He's also very protective of my daughter and I. I can't imagine him turning on us and he's excellent with my other dogs as well. The only problem I've seen with him thus far is that he's not cat-friendly. I heard that he could be trained in this regard..

I've also heard that male pit mixes that are cut make better pets. Thoughts?

Trained in this regard? Ach, ja. To make him start to sh1t on cats, instead of biting them.

southernlass:

pits like many other dogs have a fairly high prey drive- so you may not be able to do anything about cats- if they run the dog will chase & catch & possibly harm. This can also happen with herding, working & terrier breeds. Herding is a variation of prey drive, it is a controlled prey drive so the dog stops before harming the goats, sheep , cattle etc.

If you are asking if its better to neuter a dog esp a pit; yes, if you are not a breeder, breeding dogs for the betterment of the breed; it cuts down on the roaming & possible aggression (this is a terrier breed after all & many terriers are dog aggressive; thats just the way it is). No reason to keep a dog intact otherwise. Dont add to pet overpopulation esp in this economy where so many have taken dogs to the pound b/c they cant afford them. Sounds like this is a puppy- how old is your pit?

If this dog is great with other dogs- that is the main thing. keep him socialized with dogs & people & get some obedience training; you will then have a pet that you can take anywhere

Personally,I think pitbulls should be banned.
then you just proved you're abysmally misinformed on the entire topic.

I have met men with pitbulls as pets, and it's a turn off for me.
ohh, poor baby!!! well then DON'T DATE THEM. problem solved. see, wasn't that easy?

Am I the only one who feels this way?
undoubtedly not. but let me ask you this, do you require more ingorant opinions from reactive, unknowledgeable people to justify your own choices in life?

Would you ever date someone who owns a pitbull?
yes i would. and i have owned pits in the past and someday, i probably will again. yes there are problems with the breed, but guess what, there are problems with other breeds as well. but the thing is, pit bulls or something that even looks remotely like one make for very profitable media bias and media frenzy, whereas a thousand other dog bites happening every day are un-scary, un-noteworthy, and therefore un-newsworthy. BSL (breed-specific legislation) DOES NOT WORK. and every single problem with a pit bull or any other problem dog for that matter, can be traced directly to stupid, ignorant people. so instead of taking it out on the poor dog, let's go right to the source and ban stupid, ignorant people, okay?
