| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/6/2007 9:40:11 PM | | It's a male ego thing to have a potentially "bad" pit bull bouncin around the back of their pick up truck. I see it all the time. It's a "look at me I'm a bad man with my badass dog" thing. It's mostly young guys. It's funny,,,but people will always say,,, "Oh he's the sweetest dog" Till he rips some kids face off. I used to date a veterinarian. She, and many other vets wouldn't see or treat pit bulls. The vets who did insisted the dogs were muzzled and harnessed. The owners usually couldn't hold the dog either, and it took three techs to hold the dogs even when they were muzzled. Often times they needed a shot to put them out for a while. On one occasion, a pit bull got loose, wrestled his muzzle off and held the exam room hostage all afternoon. They had to call animal control to subdue the damn dog just to get it out of there. It's a breed that's bred for fighting, and not much else. They're real possessive and quick to aggression. Not so good as a pet with little kids around. They are actually outlawed in the UK I believe. I know I'll catch some grief for posting this, but so what. | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/7/2007 6:10:45 AM | Here comes your grief m409998m ---
I live in an area where pits fight...not to the extent as seen on TV, but there is plenty of fighting around here and if you want a GOOD pit, you will find a reputable breeder and raise them right. Any non-reputable "breeder" (and I use this term loosely), should be fined a HEFTY fine so it discourages them from breeding ever again!
Why do pits attack? Geez, because they have been neglected, tied up, teased, mis-treated, and because people are IRRESPONSIBLE AND IGNORANT.
WHY is it pits (and other large breed dogs) get news coverage when they attack? Because they are larger dog and cause more damage. As I said in an earlier post, the chi's, pom's, c@ckers, etc. bite more often than the large breeds, it's just that they don't cause as much damage with their smaller, less powerful jaws.
I used to work in a clinic and have met many pits (many came in as rescues). IF they were used to fight, you would be more apt to see it if they were placed in an area with another dog, not left in an area with a child. PLEASE NOTE --- NO DOG should be left in a room with a small child!! EVER!! When babies make starting movements that can scare ANY dog, the dog may see it as a threat and attack.
I am not arguing that there are attacks for no known reasons, it does happen. BUT, if a pack of chis or poms got out and could actually catch you and tear your hand off, they would. But, how many times to you find a pack of chi's as outdoor pets that have the opportunity to escape?

Um.........Tell me that you are not comparing a Siamese cat to a Pitt bull dog? Don't believe I've ever picked up the paper or turned on the news to hear of a Siamese cat mulling a child to death. There is a reason that this breed of dod is banned in some states. Duhhhhhhhhh.
They have a pretty bad reputation because they're often bread, trained, and used for illegal dog fights. However, I don't see how a pit bull from a reputable breeder in a good home would be a problem. The public winds up blaming the dogs, rather than the sick freaks that train and abuse them to fight.

I would date someone with a pitbull, but that's all. If the relationship progressed, he would have to get rid of it, because I have 2 Siamese cats that I love, and could never part with.
If anyone ever asked this of me with my dog, she would be out on the street faster then the speed of light. Regardless of breed, or pet. I have an American Bulldog currently, I also have owned/rescued Pits. Pits are fantastic dogs if they are raised with lots of love, just like any animal. Banning pits is not the solution to the problem, its the people who get them for fighting and the let them go.
Now if my dog didn't get along with a SO's pet then something would be worked out between us and the pets.

errr. I meant 150 pound pitbull. Either that was one fat pit bull or it wasn't a pure bred pitty... Pitty's range from 30-80 pounds, depending on the type of pitty, but they should never be more than 90lbs...
I have met more docile, loving pitties than I have agressive ones, even my old neighbour who had a grow house had 2 pitties and they were the sweetest dogs I've ever met, they didn't like you going in their house, but they were trained to keep people out, otherwise they were very sweet, very well behaved dogs. You could actually take a bone away from them and they wouldn't even try to tell you off, they'd just let it go, they'd even let other dogs take toys and bones away from them and never once did we have a problem with them. We've had a few pitties come through our daycare and have only had a problem with one of them, but he was a full male and had some dog agression issues, otherwise he was a total suck when it came to people and would be more than happy to curl up on your lap all day (eventhough he was aprox 75lbs)
I don't understand why people think pitties are so bad, I mean, if my old boss would have let me get a male dog while I was living with her I would own a pitty/lab that I met at the SPCA. He was a sweet boy, very loveable and from what the people at the SPCA told me, he didn't have a mean bone in his body (his owners had to give him up cause they were moving to somewhere in the states that banned pit bulls and pit bull crosses.) for someone to say that pit bulls should be banned is just wrong... You should have to have a lisence to own one, or maybe even be a trainer, but it's not fair to ban a breed just cause there are a few stupid people who make their's be agressive. I actually saw some guy start kickin' the crap out of his pitty for taking off on him and the dog was terrified... it was sad and I did actually call dog control, but this is why there are agressive pitties out there, the owners treat them like crap and they retaliate... if you want to ban an agressive dog, ban the shih-tzu or the yorkie, you are more likely to be bitten by one of them than you are the pit bull...

Saved in the knick of time by a good-will driver passing by the scene. Was a gut-wrenching experience to say the least. I think I aged 10 years that day.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/7/2007 2:19:30 PM | with all the things you need to look at in someone to date you are going to pick on them over what breed of dog they have?
Personaly I raise boxers, I dont know how many times people have walked up to me and asked if they are pitts. The first question I have when someone makes a statement like i wont date someone because of there pitt, is do you even know what a pittbull is? Most people dont. Here localy our animaly control was looking at breed bands (8 breeds total and any cross breed of any of the 8 breeds). When we put up a poster with pictures of 24 diffrent breeds of dog and quized a room of about 200 people as to which one was the pittbull. Only two people picked the right dog. If people see a short haired dog bite someone the report says pitbull bite, no one goes and checks what breed the dog really was, and because of this the pitts are getting a very bad rap.
Oh and FYI the number of confermed dog bites last year (checked by the CDC) is something you can look up and guess what the number of Lab bites if by far the highest. And you are scared of pitts.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/7/2007 4:28:28 PM | I find that pitbulls mimic their owners more than most other dogs. Which is why I'll never own one; jewish neurosis is rather embarassing to watch in a dog and my mother's pitbull is proof :P
No, they're wonderful dogs, I don't have a problem with them. Although I prefer the British ones myself - they're smaller than the American, and are a bit more reserved in personality. As long as it doesn't involve attention...the little whores :P
What actually surprised me is how so many people got the dogs; even poorly bred pitbulls are...what, $800 here? Or were, anyway...

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/7/2007 6:30:41 PM | | Hold on a sec....I own two american pitbulls, and have bred the breed for about ten years, DO NOT judge the breed because of irresponsible owners, these dogs are very family loyal and loving animals...the media gives them more hype then truth...because horror sells. I am an advocate for animal rights because of the pitbulls. The people who want to ban this breed is unaware of how great they actually are. I would love to introduce my dogs to people so they can see how loving and gentle they are. And i know a lot of people are shaking there heads saying...no thier monsters...but arent are prison full of humans that have killed?, should we try to ban the human breed too? so for those of you who wouldnt date a person with a pitbull...it is your lost. | |

Posted: 11/7/2007 8:15:02 PM | | I guess I would rather date a man with a Pitbull, that he resqued from a shelter than a date with a man who by his own choice bought a Bichon frise or something..But a man who buys a certain type of dog as a certain bodypart extender ego grewing thing,I guess not!

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/7/2007 8:41:06 PM | I don't know if there are others who feel like you, but I don't. Yes, I would date a man who had a pit bull as a pet. Assuming he has trained the dog in a positive fashion and not to attack. People need to learn pets are as good/bad as their owners! They learn what they are taught.
I would NOT date someone who abused their pet(s).

No..I never liked pit bulls, and after the last thing I read on one of the threads on here about what one did to a child I despise them even more
And I pity you for not being able to look at the true cause of the Pit Bull's reputation. It's all how they are raised, violence begets violence.

If you are reffering to the "pitbull rapes 2 year old child" you should really look into that story a little more. It isn't actually physically possible for a pitbull, or any dog, to do that kind of damage to a human. They "tie" because of feramones that are released from the female and the sensation of the tightening muscles, a child would have to be positioned just right and someone would have to spread his butt cheaks for this to happen the way they stated... there was either foul play or it never happened.
people don't understand how great pit bulls can really be... all the ones I know (with the exception of one) are more loving and gentle than a lab or retriever. They are great dogs and people just need to stop listening to the media and all the hype about them and do a little research themselves to see how great they really are.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 11/8/2007 10:02:04 AM | I had to go look this up it is a US death statistic becuase this is something that bothers me.
Last year there were 26 dog releated deaths (humans of all ages) only 1/3 of those where pitbull related and all but a very few of these attacks included mutliple dogs all of diffrent breed.
Last year there was 6,885 (414 childern under 14) where killed by drunk drivers.
hmmm let me think about this not date a guy with a pitbull or not date a guy that drinks.
I am not saying I would not date a guy that drinks a little from time time but if it is a safty issue and you are worried about death, it is not the dog you need to worry about.
