Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet?

I agree with the posters who have stated that it's the owner not the breed of dog that should be in question. If the owner treats the dog well and the pet is a good dog, who cares what the dog's breed is. It's all in how the dog is treated and trained. I've encountered a Yorkie that I didn't care for because the dog was not well trained. In my family, there are many German shepherd owners, and all those dogs (both living and deceased) were all sweet, gentle, and wonderful dogs. Personally because I have known so many German shepherds over the years, I am partial to them. I also love the mixed breed dogs like the bichon-poodle mix.

WOOF!!!

A quick example of how people just accept what they hear instad of judging for themselves:

When I rescued my pit about 5 months ago, she was only 8 weeks old, a little bitty thing. I had her in the car with me when I went through a fast-food drive-through. The girl at the window and then another employee behind her both cooed over how "sweet and cute" she was, and reached out their hands to wave/waggle their fingers at her. They asked what breed she was and when I said pit bull, they instantly snatched their hands back and shrank back from the window. What happened to "cute and sweet"? They were afraid of an 8-week puppy just because they heard "pit bull".

Not to beat a dead horse, but it really is how you raise them. They were preferred, in part, by dog-fighters because of their jaw strength and the resulting potential for damage, not because of any inherent viciousness.

I understand the comments made by people who were threatened/attacked by pits, but if you had been attacked by a fluffy little poodle you wouldn't like them either.

Honesty time.

I sterotype people to a degree. I would'nt admit this in the real world but here... Why not. Bottom line, people that have pitbulls as pets, I veiw you as a dirtbag. I don't date dirtbags. Sorry if you own a pitbull and are not a dirtbag. I'm sure a few of you exsist. This is just an eg of a few (or quite a few) bad apples ruining the whole damn bunch.

Yes you could, but take a look on how the guy acts around you, the dog (whatever it is), and other people. Especially the dog. A bad guy, a bad dog.
If you are nervous about pitbulls, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel.

There is a reason that this breed of dod is banned in some states. Duhhhhhhhhh.

because some cranked up druggie trains them to be vicious?

My cousin had a rotty/doberman mix...friendliest dog i've ever met. You could probably fit him with a saddle and let your children ride him :D

We even trained him to hug on command. just say "gimme a hug" and he'd put his paws on your shoulders....so cute :)

Awww. I would love to be hugged by a doggie!!

Anyway, one poster mentioned that if someone is attacked by a poodle that person would not like poodles afterwards.

In a way I can relate to that as I was attacked by an English setter when I was in high school. I was scared of larger dogs for a while after that, but my uncle's sweet German shepherd, "Joanna", gently nudged me back to being the dog lover I was before that incident. She was so gentle and sweet that she helped me to enjoy dogs again. Other family members have since added German shepherds to their families and they have all been a delight.

Breed isn't important--it's how well the dog is treated and trained.

Pitbulls were created by man to be dog aggressive, not people aggressive. In fact, they are very people pleasing creatures. I have never met one I haven't fallen in love with.

How many times do INTELLIGENT people have to be told....it is the owner and not the dog who is at fault. If you cannot handle a strong willed, intelligent dog....get a cat!!!!!( by the way....3 cats here, 6 dogs,& 3 horses, AND my Siamese is a pet therapy cat. NOT everything you read is true!!!!) TRAINING....TRAINING....TRAINING! You don't have a baby and expect it to read, write, etc....NO! Everything is about training.

Absolutely!! I would date anyone that I liked even if he had a "wolf" for a pet.

A pit bull is a beautiful dog!!

I just wonder if my two baby alligators would nuzzle up him??? ( Yes, I live on the edge of insanity. I've been told that I'm very brilliant or very stupid depending on the situation at hand.)

Call me shallow, but no way. Same rule for anyone who owns a snake, tarantula or anything else I feel was meant for the wild and I place pitbull's right there with the other wild life.

Funny story, and not meaning to get off topic but this question reminds me of when I was an ivy league college student over 20 years ago and dated a man who was an entymology grad student. They study insects. Well, one evening he brought me to his lab because he had to look in on his critters. He happened to have two of the biggest****oaches that I ever saw in a tupperware container. I mean these babies had to be about 4 to 5 inches each. Worse part of it was they were what you call hissing roaches. That's right, he proceeded to show me how when you tap them on their shell they hiss. Then he proceeded to feed them lettuce right from his hand, like real pets. All along I thought I was real tough 'cause I was raised in the South Bronx. Trust me, I didn't care how successful he would be in life, I never, ever dated that man again.

Oh, I just noticed they "bleeped" out that front part of the word for roaches that is also a word used to describe the male anatomy

It's the owner of a pitbull that concerns me. Two friends of mine have pitbulls and they are some of the sweetest dogs you could ever imagine. Lack of education about these animals is a huge reason why they are so feared.

yes i could I love dogs.. and its not the dog but the owner and how they raise them.. I have known many people that have owned them including my neighbor and I have never seen one bit or act over aggressive. In fact I have been bit by more German Sheppard’s then anything else and how about them tiny dogs.. they bite everything and everyone LOL! But I love em anyway!

I agree with the people who say that if you hear about people being attacked by random poodles or shar-pei's then you will be scared of them too... Well I've been attacked by more labs than any other breed but I still love them, I just know that it's not the dog's fault, it's the owner's fault. the smaller the dog, the more agressive they are because of fear, and most of the time it goes the same way for large dogs too, it just means they've been treated badly and they fear humans, it's not because the dog is agressive it's because it's scared.

It would all depend on the way the owner treated him and how well the dog responded. Honestly though.. I went on a date the other night and he owned a veeeery large pitbull and I have to say I was quite intimidated by such a big dog... then hearing it grind on its bone.... aahh made me think what would happen if it turned on me.

Yes I would. People, the dog is only as good as their owner. Growing up, the pitts I knew (come from a big animal family, always around), the pitts were well behaved, acted more like you average everyday labador and lap dog rolled into one. ALL the dogs I was around were like this, (except for those little nippy prissy chawawas (I know, spelling, LOL). Family gatherings always included your dogs, and the dogs love the doggie get togethers, whether pitt, lab, poodle, pug, shepard, pure breed american (mixed dog that is) mastiff, st banard, llasa, what ever.

Now, like I said, its not the dog, per say, but how well the owner has actually trained it. Dosnt matter if its a bad pitt or not, there are bad dogs of all breeds cause of all the bad owners who encourage it or ignore it or who shouldnt have a dog. No pitt has every growled, snapped or been aggresive towards me, any kids I know or strangers. But a neighbors St banard put me in the hospital when I was 5, almost lost my sight because of the attack. They wanted a dog for "protection" , but didnt train it to be 100 percent voice controlled, and diditn care if he roamed the neighborhood. Bad dog cause bad owners unfortunatly for the dog.

Enough said.

I own a pit bull who is 12 years old now. She is the most loving and sweet dog. She does not like some other dogs and will go after them so I have to be very careful. There are lots of other dogs who will do the same thing. I love her and she is and has been my best friend and brought a lot of joy to my life.

There is nothing with bit bulls. there is nothing wrong with owning a pit bull, unless you breed them for dog fighting.

Heck, i got one myself. His name is prince. he's a great dog, but if looks like you are trying to hurt one of the kids, he gets really protective.

My Pit would get loose after he....... lets say found himself some lovin. He got to know the dog catcher fairly well to the point he would get out in the morning and she would bring him home after I got home from work. She said on more than one occation that they had McDonalds for lunch. She also told me the first time she picked him up that he came right up to her with his tail wagging and a smile on his face. He was protective, as all dogs are but the most loving and smart dog I've ever owned.

^^^ omg, what are you on about?

Ah, yeah.. Dogs are dogs-
Each variety has a disposition -some are more aggressive than others. Some people are drawn to a type of dog because they like the stigma of that breed.
Personally, I think narrow minded, uneducated, ignorance fosters that kind of mentality and the dater should decide to date the datee by a vast number of things- but certainly not the kind of dog they have...

For those of you that have negative opinions about pitbulls... please realize the problem lies with people like Vick!!!

Question the HUMAN!!! behind the dog!!!

PS.. I let my dogs decide who I associate with. They are better judges of character than me. My dogs are absolutely loving, as most have told me. Occasionally, someone will enter my home, and if my dogs act strange, then I'm on alert. Not on alert about the dog, but about the human in my house. Twice I've dated a guy that my dogs reacted nervous too, and both times the dogs were right... the guy had a power/control obsession/issue, that I found out later, he also had multiple domestic battery charges.

Dogs HATE my Aunt and my female cousin. They also have NO PROBLEM kicking dogs!!! Then they wonder why dogs hate them??? DUH!!!

QUESTION THE HUMAN!!!
