Pitbulls scare you cuz you're ignorant.
Yes they are dangerous. I believe a special license should be required to own these animals.

But not considering someone cuz of the dog they own is lame. By the way, I'm not a Pitbull owner. I'd rather own vicious poodles.

While many pits can be and are aggressive, there are also many that are not. I've run into pits that would turn tail and run at the site of Garfield the demon cat. How about, rather than banning an entire breed, let's ban the people who are training and breeding them to be aggressive.

No, Pitbulls are very dominant. I dated a chick with a couple of them, and they wanted to join in for sleeping! And she agreed!! I WILL NOT sleep with animals in my bed, I am a human being, and animals are meant to sleep on the floor. Including especially vicious canines bred for violence in gladitorial pits. You animal loving freaks are going to go all crazy on me, but I think animals are below human beings and should be regulated back to their status. Now, that doesn't mean they should be abused or mistreated, just given the treatment that they EXPECT as domesticated ANIMALS!

The dogs are NOT natural killers they are bred and raised to be killers. There is a difference.

A dog IS by nature a killer...no matter what the breed. A dog has teeth, it bites, if it's hungry enough it will kill...

I have worked with animals for over 25 years...I have been bit by more poodles, yorkies, and chihuahuas than Rotties, Pits or Dobermans...the difference is when a big dog bites they do more damage.

think about it these dog,s were bread for fighting to the death and other dog,s

Pit bulls were originally bred as hunters, badger hunters to be exact. Not fighting... that came a little later when it was realized that these dogs could fight and still be non-aggressive towards their masters.

Due to all the inbreeding of these precious animals they have become what people today are so afraid of. If given the chance to raise one of these awesome dogs you will realize just how wonderful they are. I would take a pit bull over ANY breed whatsoever.

Breed isn't important--it's how well the dog is treated and trained.

This is so true...any dog can be trained to be a killer....any person can be trained to be a killer...some agrue Nature vs Nuture...

Ok since someone played the, the pit ate the kids foot off card,

A couple years ago I know someone that came home drunk passed out and they there doxi puppy ate 3 of her toes off.

It is not put bulls, 99% of the time it is the people that own the the offending dogs (no matter what the breed) that have the problem. Look at the people not that there dogs. Good people tend to have good, well manered, well behaved dogs. Bad people tend to have bad dogs.

i wouldn't bother with her if she had a pitbull.

why should I? it's just a unnecessary headache. no matter how well trained it is, it can snap and do some major damage to me.

besides, it's against the law to own one here in ontario.

As it has been said, it's the owners that create bad pitbulls. I have a pitbull/lab mix and she's awesome. The only thing that she barks at are squirrels. She's well behaved, plays nice w/ children, and rarely barks at anyone. In other words, she rocks.

The flagrant stupidity of some humans!!!

BANNING ANY breed of animal is pure nasty human ignorance!!
In fact, a family in Ontario almost had their Lab (registered) removed from their home and destroyed due to a neighbor's phone call to the Breed-Police. They came into the owner's home on a call that the dog was a Pit. Even shown the reg papers the officer attempted to remove the Lab. They were (luckily) able to call a lawyer, and have their day in court.

BANNING a breed because of BAD HUMAN OWNERS is pathetic.
Enough harmless, helpless animals are destroyed every day without adding to the carnage. JESUS!

Pitts make excellent pets...and are as nasty as their handler/owner, or as nice.
So are Collies, St Bernards, Shepherds, etc.
ANY breed can become notoriously nasty if that breed is used in that way by humans.
Pitts have been used as weapons.
So have Rotts.
German Sheps.
As well as several other breeds....it's never the breed. Just the trainer.

That kind of non-thinking is a stomach turner.

No, I would not. The breed should be banned. I know I will catch flack for this, but facts are facts. Is a pit more likely to bite than any other breed? No. Is any dog going to bite?
There is a good chance any dog will, given the right circumstances. The question is the damage.

Here is one fact taken from a study in 2000: http://www.cdc.gov/ncipc/duip/dogbreeds.pdf

Examine the deaths from dog bites. Of 238 deaths reported between 1979-1998, 105 were from Rotts and Pits. That is almost HALF. 66 from pits, over 25%. Are some pits great pets and have wonderful dispositions? Certainly, but they can KILL a child just PLAYING. All the training in the world can NOT insure that dog will not bite. And, if the dog does...and all dogs can and likely will....there will be some damage.

These dogs are worse than a loaded gun left in the house.

Owning a pit or a rott is irresponsible. Read the facts.

http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog%20Attacks%201982%20to%202006%20Clifton.pdf

I am guessing the Pit advocates will not take the time to read the facts.

PITS ARE DANGEROUS, DANGEROUS, DANGEROUS, even the "well-trained" ones.

Ok...now, flame away.

The studies mentioned above are not true. If you actually look at the pics of the dogs they are classifying as pits and rotties aren't actually pitties or rotties but cross breeds of all sorts. there are a ton of dogs out there that look like they could be pits but they aren't, so it's unfair to say that all these attacks are from pits.
Pit Bulls were actually bred for helping Military personel and running in the bunkers. They would beable to sense the opponents coming and would warn the men in the bunkers and they would move out. they could also detect land mines and other traps set by the opposing side and could guid their people through the battle fields at night. it wasn't until after people found out how strong and resilient these dogs were that they started making them fight, and even then they were for fighting Bulls at first, that's where they got their name, from being tossed into a pit with a bull. then people started getting board of that so they started turning the dogs against others of the same breed.
If you get a pitbull from a responsible breeder you will have a great dog, however, if you get them from a back-yard breeder, chances are you will get a pitbull that has temperment issues. Not only are dogs trained to be vicious by regular training, but just being misshandled by people makes them vicious too. Most pits that are agressive towards people are that way because they were misstreated, but for the most part they are only aggressive towards other dogs/animals.
The American PitBull Terrier is impulsive and strong willed. The APBT is admired for their tenacity, courage, spirit and willingness to please it's owner. This powerful breed needs a RESPONSIBLE owner who will commit to careful socialization and ongoing training.
This is a description straight from an AKC registered APBT breeder. so maybe all of you that think pitbulls are such bad dogs, maybe you should do some research and talk to registered breeders before you form your opinions. I'm not a pitbull owner but I know people who are, and I've looked after some (including a few at the SPCA, which were the most friendly dogs there) and I haven't had problems with any of them...
there's a site on the net that shows pics of about 16 dogs and only one is a pitbull... look it up and see if you can actually pick out the pitbull (all dogs on the site are pure breds...)

I think it is such a shame that people classify all dogs as bad because of their breed. Any dog can be mean and aggressive- ANY dog. Pit bulls get a bad rap, but it should be the irresponsible owners that get that, not the dogs. I have a pit mix, and she would lick you to death. And I also have several cats. My dog is afraid of some of the cats for heavens sake! So yes, I would certainly date someone that had a pit bull. Now if the dog was agressive, it would also clue me in that perhaps this person isn't somone I want to be with.

Wow... I'm Absolutely DISGUSTED with people's ignorance... To read the replies, the original post, and such...

The amount of ignorance and stupidity in most of the posters here is shocking! To want to destroy a species of something based upon ones lack of understanding, is just like the racisim and other gender-specific segregations this country battles against every day...

Some of the nicest dogs I have ever met are pit bulls. It's not the dogs fault of what it is, just like its not the person's fault they were born a he/she, black/white/native/etc... I personally care for 3 pit bulls amongst other farm animals. The neighbor's black labs chase my livestock, destroy my poultry, and terrorize my dogs and have attacked me on numerous occasions. As for my pit bulls? They don't care who you are, or why you are there, they know you came to pet them... Bring children, cats, chickens, horses, and your best tennis ball, they don't care, they love everyone...

Statistics prove that African Americans in some of the bigger cities like New York and LA have the higher ratio for being in prison for violent crimes. Does that mean we destroy or ban all African Americans from New York and LA, and or Destroy them? I thought not...

I've met a lot of people who freak out and get stupid when they find out that I have Pit bulls... Most of them spent the better part of the day playing, petting, and bonding with the dog, only to find out that it was a pit bull. Then after all of the fun, they were instantly disgusted, scared, and got mad. But why? When they were ignorant of the breed, it was okay to pet it, but suddenly things changed? Surely not the dog's attitude...

I think the media has put a mass-hysteria on the pit bull. There are a lot of other animals harming humans, and pit bull dogs are only a fraction. There is almost no difference between a pit bull, a hunter with a gun, a teenager with a hot rod, and an electric fence... Any of these can be dangerous, but its how they are handled that makes the difference...

Any one ever hear of a person dying from a Chihuahua bite? I bet not. And statistics show more people are bitten from Chihuahuas,****r Spaniels, and CATS than Pit Bull Dogs... I've been kicked by my horses and cattle Far more times than I have ever been afraid of Anyone's pit bull.

Just for 10 minutes, put your ignorance and stupidity aside, find that responsible Pit Bull owner and ask him/her if you can throw the ball for their dog, watch how the dog interacts with children, families, farms, and society... And I guarantee that you will find that the Pit Bull is in no way different from any other breed...

Dogs aren't mean, people make dogs mean...

As a owner of 2 WOUNDERFUL and BEAUTIFUL pittbull-Bull Dog mix's i must say that you truly do not know all about pittbulls if you are making this kind of statment......They are NOT required to wear a muzzle...I could put a muzzle on my step mother tea-cup puddel but does that make him a mean dog NO!...Because of people like Mike Vick that TRAIN THEM TO FIGHT, we as owners of pittbulls have a very bad rap...I have traind my Pittbull's to love people and not to be so "MEAN" as people would call them, I raised them around my baby Nephey and my 2 other cats. You would NEVER know the differeance from this dog to another so befor you go around and start to slam pitt-bulls look them up You going to see more bad then good for the reason that there are stupid people out in this world...But just look at the good, it will out shine the bad! TRUST ME!

You go to reach for my dog'd food and Most dogs would snap at you'r hand...My 2 dogs on the other hand just look at you like..." HEY WHAT ARE YOU DOING...YOU BETTER BE GIVING US MORE FOOD!!"...So as i said...Look you the good things about the dogs before you spout out at the mouth!

I'm with a lot of the posters: I don't believe a specific breed of dog is "badder" than another. Quite frankly, the meannest dog I know is my mom's lhasa apso, and if he were disciplined he wouldn't be mean (so maybe he's not "mean", he's "pampered"). My niece owns 2 pits, and the female is just a dog, the male (neutered) will fight any other dog that happens along. While both are cute and friendly to people they know, I wouldn't ever leave a baby in a locked room with most dogs.

It's just that as a breed gets more popular, the idiots who like to have big, powerful dogs make them mean. I don't know why these people are driven to do this, but they do it.

In the 60s the "bad" breed german shepherds.
In the 70s, it was dobermans.
In the 80s, it was rottweilers.
Now it's pit bulls.

They are proven to be fairly dangerous animals by comparison and I personally believe a person that wants one is trying to be something they're not (tough guy/girl, etc.).

They are Proven huh...Show me where its PROVEN FOR A FACT that they are mor dangerous then any other dog...EVERY dog can snap, no matter what type of dog it is, In the right hands Pitt's are more loving and more gental then any other dog out there...

And where do you get off say that We pitt bull owners are trying to be something we are not? i don't get why you would say that...You saying that is like saying guys that own a small dog are gay! You and the rest of the people that say pitt's are more dangerous need to stop beleaving what you see on T.v and hear on the radio and step back from you'r world and LEARN THE OTHER SIDE OF IT! It makes me so mad when people that don't even know someone or own a pitt shuts them down because of the THEY SEE ON TV

Slightly off topic but not by much--I love bulldogs. Especially English bulldogs, which are known to have a wonderful disposition.

Good dogs are well trained dogs, regardless of breed. It's the owner who is ultimately responsible for how well a dog behaves.

Among my favorite dogs are German shepherds, bulldogs and mutts.

A dog is a dog no matter what breed...they all have it in them to attack.
I would never not date someone with a pit bull unless they had no control over their dog.
