| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 12/15/2007 8:32:59 PM | Badly trained chihuahuas and poodles can attack and bite people just as badly as any pit bull. I know a guy who was bitten real badly by a poodle, and he's scared sh*tless of them now because of the frightening experience he had.
I am only concerned about dogs that are not properly trained and cared for. I'd much rather be with a pit bull that was well trained, cared for and well socialized than a dangerous poodle that has a history of biting people. You know, it's funny, I can see a bit of dog-ism here . Racism is a sad and horrible thing, but we also are guilty of dog-ism if we won't date a guy merely because his pet happens to be a pit bull. Prejudice against anyone for his ethnicity or even a dog because of his breed results in not giving the person or the dog for that matter a fair chance!!
Bulldogs for example aren't as "pretty" as poodles, but they are so lovable! I also love boxers, German shepherds, mutts and pugs in particular. They are just as lovable as the so-called "cute" dogs if they are trained properly and given lots of loving.
Theoretically, someone might refuse to date me over owning a German shepherd, a bulldog and a boxer. After I move I just may get those kinds of dogs. I like them!! His loss, not mine!! LOL

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 12/16/2007 1:14:28 PM | | Here's a little piece of info for all you that think pits are bad dogs and are more capable of doing more harm than any other breed... My friend's neice just recently (3 days ago) got her finger bitten off by a shih-tzu/toy poodle cross and she was just reaching out to pet the dog after the owner had said that she was a very friendly dog. This little girl lives with 2 pit bulls and was actually out walking one of them when this happend. She is 7 years old, she told her pitty to sit and stay before she walked over to the little dog and the pit listened to her. she reached out to pet the little dog and she snapped. her pitty came over, and stood between her and the little dog and waited for the girl's mom to come to her rescue (the little girl was screaming like crazy cause she had just lost her finger) The pit didn't do anything to the other dog or to the other dog's owner, she just sat between them and waited for someone to help her friend. So, all of you that think little dogs aren't capable of doing harm to anyone you better think again. | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 12/16/2007 2:27:01 PM | I would never date a person with a pit bull. Not because of the animal.
Here's my reasoning...
Insurance companies will not cover ANY liability for a pit bull on a homeowners insurance (to the best of my knowledge). (I'm not sure if they'll drop your homeowners insurance altogether or if they won't cover the dog.) If the person I met has a pit bull and he's renting he's being irresponsible by disregarding the potential liability of the property owner. If he's a homeowner and has a pitbull then HIS property insurance isn't covering him. Now he's just being irresponsible as a homeowner.
It says alot about his character. I don't want anyone in my life who doesn't/wont take responsibilities for their actions either through irresponsibility or ignorance.
I don't know if the dogs are dangerous. I'm sure there are good and bad animals within the breed. BUT... if the insurance industry as a whole won't insure THAT breed then I have to side with the stats.
I guess what I'm trying to say is that a responsible pet owner should be able to afford the consequences of owning a pet -- that includes being able to afford care, maintenance and liability for that pet. If you can't afford any one aspect of being a responsible pet owner then you shouldn't own the pet. Be it a pit bull or otherwise.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 12/16/2007 7:49:52 PM | | How about homeowners who have the dogs attend obedience school? I don't think it's fair to deny homeowners' insurance coverage to a dog owner who has sent the dog to obedience school and the dog is properly trained, regardless of the species. A shizzoo can be just as bad as any other untrained dog. Small dog doesn't always translate to safe dog, just as the poster who mentioned a relative being attacked by a shizzoo/poodle mix. It's the TRAINING that counts, not the breed. I would switch home owners insurance if I had a policy that wouldn't let me have a German shepherd, even if the dog is properly trained and is gentle. One of the very reasons why I love shepherds is that among my family, I have gotten to know and love many shepherds, all of which were gentle and loving dogs. It is wrong of insurance companies to deny coverage to a homeowner with a properly trained dog, regardless of its breed. | |

Posted: 12/17/2007 1:53:12 PM | I don't know which insuruance companies you've been dealing with, but no one I know who has a pit bull has ever had issues with getting home owners' insurance, or renters insurance for that matter. The people I know that have this breed, or other breeds that resemble the pit bull (such as staffordshire terriers, bull dogs, dogue de bordeaux, argentine dogo, boxers, bull terriers, american bulldogs, bullmastiffs, cane corso, olde english bulldogge, south african boerboel, and the tosa inu) have to let the insurance company meet the dog first, or in the situation where they are renting, the homeowner has to meet the dog as well, and as long as they decide that the dog is not a threat to people or to damaging the property, they are covered just as well as anyone esle. The same goes if you have a st. bernard or any other large breed dog, as long as the insurance company doesn't think they are a risk you are fully covered. I am also fully covered for liability, property, and house insurance eventhough I have breeds of all kinds coming and going from my house, they range from yorkies to pit bulls, from shih-tzus to great pyranees' and every breed between and I've not had a single insurance company turn me away because of the breeds I look after.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 12/17/2007 4:06:13 PM | If you really know a pitbull personally, this is somewhat of a racist question. "Pitbull" covers a massive number of dogs, most of whom, really, are mostly mutts. And any dog, unless it is of a particularly foul line and should be put down anyway, can be raised properly and be a wonderful addition to a home. Yes, I have a pitbull: Duddits. Neutered male. Our biggest problem with him is that he is so short-haired, he likes to get in bed with people and lie right next to them for the warmth. I have more than one dog, and Duddits is not even the alpha dog around them - he lets a tiny little Shih Tzu run the show. Every dog is different, just as every human being is. Don't limit yourself unnecessarily. Just sayin'. | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 12/19/2007 12:14:24 PM | | I have a pitbull and he was brutally attacked by a lab and he almost died. He didnt try to fight off the other dog he just let it happen. The lab had not cuts or anything my dog had 5,000 dollars worth of sugery. He has fully recovered and he still wouldnt harm a fly. He has been around my frind 2days old baby all he did was lick it once then laid down on the floor by the bassinet and went to sleep. He would protect anyone from being hurt by another person or animal. If someone was trying to stab you wouldnt you want to be safe rather than dead. ANYWAY if a guy cant deal with me having a American Pit Bull Terrier he isnt worth my time! | |

SO THEY ARE NOT THE MEANEST DOG OUT THERE. YOU NEED TO TAKE A NOTHER LOOK AROUND. TAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO WORKS WITH THEM ALL THE TIME. I KNOW

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 2/21/2008 6:17:35 PM | Any animal can be mean it all depends on how they were raised and trained ( not always the same thing). Many pit bulls are big babies. As are rots , dobies , labs. It all depends on the training recieved from the owner. None of the animals are inherently mean or even aggresive. My old labs best friend was a pit. and yes it was indeed a big baby. | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 2/22/2008 8:45:03 PM | "It's a breed that's bred for fighting, and not much else."
It's true that they were bred for fighting - it can't be denied. I once had a Pit, and bought several books on the breed. One of the main reasons they were popular for fighting is because they were very "people oriented" and in the "pit" could be separated from the dog it was fighting - WITHOUT turning on it's handler. My brother and his wife raised two Pit bulls right along with their kids. Those dogs were wonderful with their children.
I got my dog from the animal shelter and her tag said, Lab mix. I thought she might have been part Pit or Boxer, but believed she was part Lab. When I took her to the vet, he said it was possible she was mixed, but he highly doubted it. Before I told him what the shelter said, and had asked for his opinion of her breeding, he had said she was "pit bull all the way." I was surprised and did feel a little deceived, but the vet said animal shelters will use discretion in certain cases and probably thought she was worth saving. If that's true, I don't think it's right. I have mixed feelings on it, I guess. I loved her and she was very loving, but she was THE stongest dog I had ever known. After taking care of horses all day, I really didn't have the energy to deal with her. It takes a special kind of pet owner for this type of dog, imo. Any type of working dog, really.
I finally had to accept defeat and advertised to find a new owner. After 3 months of no luck there I returned her to the shelter. It was very hard to do. I doubt if I'll ever have a dog again. But, I'd have to agree with some of the other posters, in that it's about the owner, not the animal. And, yes, I'd date a Pit Bull owner.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 3/11/2008 7:57:35 AM | Pit bulls are illegal in my county. Years ago my step son had a pitbull, Patch. He wasnt mean to us, he loved us, but he was very territorial, and protective of us. We had 2 other dogs at the time. Patch would attach other dogs that came near. Everyday, when getting home, all the dogs would come to the car to meet us, my sons were 3 and 4 years old at the time. There was a dog fight everytime, if Patch was loose. He didnt want the other dogs to get attention, especially from my young sons. More than once, I had to lift my son up, out of the midst of a dogfight. It got to where I hated that dog. He was protecting my boys, but at the same time, putting them in harms way, by starting the dogfight. I finally insisted the dog be chained up all the time. He was very aggressive to anyone who came to visit. It is their instinct to be that way. | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 8/31/2008 10:46:19 AM | I find it very selfish to demand that someone give up a pet for a relationship. Make him get rid of his pits for your cats?? LMAO!! wow maybe he doesnt like your smelly cats! Make him get rid of his pits because OTHERS have had problems and not his? again...VERY selfish!
Accepting someone as they are means accepting their choice in pets as well.
I dare any man try to tell me it is him or my birds..won't work here.
Also I dated someone who has a Yorkie that when I tried to pet him he tried to bite me in the face. So yea the little ones bite to.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 8/31/2008 11:33:17 AM | Um.........Tell me that you are not comparing a Siamese cat to a Pitt bull dog? Don't believe I've ever picked up the paper or turned on the news to hear of a Siamese cat mulling a child to death. There is a reason that this breed of dod is banned in some states. Duhhhhhhhhh
OMG.....what planet are you on? Duh? lol ok I stopped using that when I was oh..10!
Tell my daughter that when she got attacked by a stupid cat and her best friend had a pitt bull that only ever tried to love her to death. She had cuts all over her legs when that cat gone done with her so do not even go there. Cats are well known for causing infections when they bite and YES THEY DO BITE! Dont get me wrong I love siamese cats but they will never ever in my book compare to the attention and affection you can get from a dog INCLUDING pit bulls.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 8/31/2008 12:10:04 PM | | I certainly would. I have a few friends who share their homes with rescued pits and they're the sweetest dogs I've ever met. It all depends on the dog or the person. I've known folks with all kinds of dog breeds and some of the dogs have been nasty, mostly because of their upbringing and training. I could never date someone who was mean or careless with an animal, regardless of the breed. | |
