| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/14/2009 7:38:52 PM | | I'll bet MOST of the narrow minded people on here CAN'T even pick out a pittbull in a line-up. Neither can most people on the street, they just lump all dogs that "look" like pit into that catagory. Google do you know what a pit is and see if you can pick out which dog is the pit. Bet you get it wrong!!! I agree...it;s all about prejudice. Ignorant people make an assumption based on, often false news. In MA 2 years ago a 4lb Pomeranian mauled and killed a baby. Was it on the news? NO, because it was not a pit or Rottweiler. You NEVER leave any dog alone with a child....children are often mean. I am sooooo sick of stereo typing breeds. If you get a dog...SOCIALIZE it....TRAIN it!!!! i do personal protection work and compete in ringsport.....all kind of dogs. The "most" dangerous?,,,,,,,,, I would never mess with a Malinois! Have 2 of them. Most professionals refer to them as maligators! ' nough said' Mine weighs 58lbs.......he'll bring down a 250lb decoy quicker than you can say, "run!" He is also a certified pet therapy dog, has his CGC and his ATTS. He does Paws for a Cause as well. So....is he a "mean" dog? NO! Will he bite......yes! He protects me, my home, my belongings....that's part of why I have him. You cannot lump all dogs of a breed together......"all blondes are dumb"....I beg to differ!!!!!! See how STUPID assumptions are????!!!!! | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/14/2009 9:45:36 PM | A young man at my job got a red nosed pit bull puppy. The dog is now almost two. The young man couldn't keep him for a while due to hardship.. I felt so bad for him because he couldn't find a home for him so I took the dog. That was the LAST dog I thought I would ever want to own. The first two weeks I had him I had to carry around a rolled up newspaper, but now he is a great dog, very mellow, playful, and loves to cuddle. I love the fact that all the unemployed bored teenagers in the neighborhood know I have a pit bull. | |

I think that reply aptly demonstrated the stupidity of assumptions mentioned in the post it replied to.
I like how it made an assumption about what the post it was in reply to was saying(about people rather than the assumptions they hold). I'm inclined to agree with both.
...got a red nosed pit bull puppy.
One of the pictures in your profile also appears to be of a chihuahua I saw on a vampire movie one time. Now that's scary!

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/15/2009 3:34:02 AM | Do the research. I also don't date people with loaded guns all around the house, who display rebel flags in the yard, or on the hoods of their trucks, or have "No fat chicks" bumper stickers. My mind may be made up but it is not narrow, Yes It is the owners who are to blame. Out of 20 pit owners in this state, maybe one is responsible. It is S.C. and it is relative. Michael Vick picked it for a reason.( S.C.) To all resposible dog owners everywhere I applaud you. I was answering a personal preference question. It's still no. Bring the Vinegar and truck to the south.
Many take pride in how mean they can make these dogs ,who by no fault of there own can crush your head with their jaws.

I didn't assume anything. Read the post I quoted. His postion is that anyone who thinks differently than him about this issue is narrow minded, prejudiced, ignorant and stupid. It is what he said. I didn't have to make any assumptions.
And you are another one who likes to call people stupid who see things differently than you do.
Oh, didn't you realize angelic: anyone who disagrees with people who think pitbulls are wonderful, anyone who disagrees with that is narrow minded?

I am scared of those dogs and they can attack even their owners at times. My brother had one and when he walked it, he had a gun. He said just in case his dog went crazy he would have to shoot it himself.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/19/2009 5:29:22 PM | In our area, they are trying to ban Pit Bull Dogs for being viscious, but the viscious ones are the people that breed them to fight and have the breeding racks, etal.
Once you ban an entire breed, regardless of the disposition and demeanor of the dog, that is opening a can of worms. A lot of people think my dog is viscious merely because he is a "Rockweiler" or Rottweiler. He is a "Giant Dog" breed.
Certainly, the dope boyz get Pits and train them to guard their stash. If we could only ban the thugs and put all of them down, then we would not have to try to ban a very intelligent breed of dog. They are faithful and docile when properly bred and raised with love. Yet, it would be inhumane to put all of those viscious quality people down!

Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet?
Definitely.
I love dogs. Pitbulls would be included in that.
For all that's said about Pitbulls (or Rottweilers, or Dobermans), I've never had any trouble with those kinds of dogs. Then again, I tend to be attracted to the big (often misunderstood) dogs, especially if they're mutts or mixed breeds.
I was attacked by a Collie though. You know, the Lassie dogs? So don't point fingers at one specific breed. I hold nothing against Collies, just because one decided to use me for a chew toy. But on the other hand, for people interested in having a pet dog, please do research and learn about the breeds. Dogs have certain temperaments, and behave best in certain conditions. A working dog won't make a good lap dog, so... Just know what you're getting into before hand...

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/21/2009 4:56:02 AM | Texas,
My dog still thinks he is a lap dog.
I agree with research! I began volunteering at a shelter, and did my research once I had him home and realized I had a lot to learn. I have called our trainer crying many times and he is great and has been so helpful to us.
The one thing I managed to do properly all along was to keep him well-socialized. I had no idea what I was getting into, but fortunately I am a quick study.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/21/2009 5:38:24 AM | Not unless she let me have the lil' sweeties teeth extracted....painlessly, of course. Even so, a dog as powerful as this breed are could probably gum you to death.
The last pit bull I encountered was a family dog, surprised by a stranger (me), helping a friends son move. He opened the door and the dog took one look....and went for my goodies. Only because I was quick enough to protect by turning did I escape with just puncture wounds in my thigh and ripped jeans.
Too many of these "family pets" have maimed and killed people, most of them the children of the dogs owners.

Anyone who would invite me into their home or yard where there is a pitbull w/o warning me ahead or locking up the animal would be someone I would never see again socially. Taking a chance with yourself or your family is one thing, trying to prove that these are normal dogs by taking chances with other people's well being in uconscionable.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/21/2009 7:32:08 AM | Animals are only as aggressive as the person who raises them. It applies the same to people. You're more likely to grow up to be good if you were raised right and raised in a good environment, but if you had a really rough up bringing and your parents abused you in some way, then that will translate to you later down the road.
Honestly, one of my friends has a 6 month Pit Bull puppy and he is so sweet. I also had another friend who had a full grown pit bull and he was the sweetest thing ever. The only reason Pit Bulls get such a bad name is because they have bad owners that abuse them and raise them to become fighting dogs.
It's so ignorant that everyone labels Pits, Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chows, etc as aggressive breeds. I went to school for vet tech and we had all walks of life when it came to dog breeds. We had Golden Retrievers, Boxers, Labs, Rottweilers, Dobermans, terriers, etc. The one Doberman we had was such a sweet little dog. He was such a baby, too. We also had a couple Rottweilers that were sweet as can be. A so called "aggressive" breed has no more greater chance of turning aggressive than any other breed out there. Even a Golden Retriever that is known to be pretty much one of the most docile breeds could turn aggressive due to trauma as a puppy or some other experience.
My step mom raised a Golden Retriever and when it was younger the drunken neighbors would come around and break beer bottles around her or on her, and one day we were walking in the park and this lady smelled like alcohol apparently and Red (the dog) nearly attacked this woman.
If you want to be close minded and assume all Pit Bulls are bad, then by all means go ahead. But just know that it only reflects on the owner that raised them. Hell, some cats are absolutely vicious and growl and hiss at you when you go to pet them, but I've raised both mine in a loving environment (they have no idea how spoiled they are, haha) so they are absolutely loving cats. Would never think of biting or hissing at any person.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/23/2009 5:56:51 PM | Sure. Most of the pit-bulls I've met have been the sweetest dogs in the world. Not the smartest dogs in the world. Most of the ones I've met never stopped licking people...or things around the house.
Sure, they are born to be hunting dogs, but they don't have to be. German Shepherds also have this violent nature, but it's up to us not to bring it out in them. If we're violent with them, they'll be violent.
It's like man, we have a natural instict for survivial. If we don't know what violence is though, we're not going to act on it. It's up to us to not show the animals that violence is even an option for them.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/24/2009 1:10:06 PM | Oh good grief??? Don't any of you realize that dogs/cats etc. are animals??? Pets REFLECT there owners. If the pet is taught to fight, IT WILL!!!!
This angers me to no end that people will say such things about a specific breed!!! I have been around animals all my life and NOT ONE has ever attacked me. Why?? Because their friggin' owners took the time to train them and love them.
I have been around Pitbulls and regularly watch a pitbull mix for a neighbor. Never once have I been bitten.
It's posts and thoughts like these that give Pitbulls as well as other big dog breeds a bad name. Oh, and these dogs are NOT required to wear a muzzle. No dog is.
Geez, what ever happened to respecting and loving animals?

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/24/2009 8:12:03 PM | In college, I had a friend who had a friend who had a dog named Falstaff. I loved Falstaff, and Falstaff loved me. I never realized that Falstaff was a Pit Bull, and he always gave me kisses (I did not grow up around dogs). John told me that his dog hated every girlfriend he ever brought home until "The One" and that is how he knew she was the one. How kewl is that? A dog as a dating screening device! Unfortunately, in Ohio, regardless of the demeanor, they are classified as vicious, require a muzzle, and all of the other things. I have become partial to Rotties, myself, but I second everything that ShadowGal4u has to say! | |

I didn't assume anything. Read the post I quoted.
I did. Funny thing about that - I could swear it was written by a woman.
His postion is that anyone who thinks differently than him about this issue is narrow minded, prejudiced, ignorant and stupid. It is what he said. I didn't have to make any assumptions.
And you are another one who likes to call people stupid who see things differently than you do.
I'm not another one, I'm the original one Since HE(meaning the woman you quoted) didn't. The woman you quoted did not say anyone who thinks differently from him/her is stupid. She(or he, if that's how you prefer to refer to her) said ignorant people jump to conclusions and make assumptions based on incorrect information. You latched onto that and decided to make some assumptions based on incorrect information(even about the poster's gender). The irony is delicious.
If you can't see the difference between "Ignorant people do x" and "all people who do x are ignorant", then the following logic should work really well on you.
Oh, didn't you realize angelic: anyone who disagrees with people who think pitbulls are wonderful, anyone who disagrees with that is narrow minded?
Absolutism(and false dichotomies) works wonderfully well with children. I don't think many of the people disagreeing with you here are children, unfortunately.
Do the research.
That's the real solution here. Unfortunately, it won't support the premise of the thread as nicely as many would like it to.

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/30/2009 8:36:16 AM | A man asked me the other day: "My wife wants to get a dog, either a Bull Mastiff, a Boxer, or an American Bulldog." It is clear that she likes powerful dogs. He added that she wants to have a baby in the short-term. I did not have time to adequately research, but I landed on the Boxer. Boxers according to on-line research are affectionate towards children, and female dogs are known to be maternal in that respect. He did not want a dog as large as a Mastiff. Bulldogs are stigmatized because of people like Michael Vick. Any feedback? Did I advise him properly? | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/30/2009 8:39:29 AM | | If I were going to have a baby and was looking for a family dog, I'd research ALL dog breeds and find the one that does best with children, which, I believe, research shows to be the Golden Retriever. I doubt any type of bull dog or boxer is the safest breed to have around children. | |

| Could you ever date someone that owns a pitbull as a pet? Posted: 5/31/2009 6:04:51 AM | Thanks for the feedback, because I am always trying to learn. I also gave him links so they can research any breed before adopting. Petfinder.com has an excellent source of information. Ironically, though, I took a web test a few days ago to find the right breed for you (to see if I picked the right breed), and there were NO MATCHES! According to this on-line test, there are no dog breeds with which I am compatible; yet, I am Dr. Doolittlette, a very good and competent dog owner, and also good with other peoples' dogs. Go figure? I guess the moral of the story is that statistics can only go so far in accuracy. Clearly, I must be the exception to the rules. Research helps, but going with your gut instincts isn't always a bad thing either. | |
