I dont mind someone sitting in the kitchen talking to me while I'm whipping up a meal, but the kitchen is definitely MY SPACE when I'm in there to cook. So, someone leaning over my shoulder or trying to "help" would make me nuts!

Interesting thread topic! I never even thought about it before but now that I have, I do like it when people watch me cook a big meal!! I took culinary arts classes for two years and I loved it when my instructors would lean over and check out what I was making and then compliment me on how it smelled or looked. I guess I just got used to being watched while I was cooking....

But one thing that does bother me is if someone is watching me frost a cake. I don't know why but it just takes a lot of concentration for me to decorate a cake using the tips and if someone is right behind me talking, I can easily get distracted and mess up the cake!

Are you kidding?!!!

Being watched is like a perfomance. If you've done all your prep work and and have everything ready, you can pull it off as effortlessly as most cooking shows make it appear to be.

Always happy to have someone clean up when I'm done. I am somewhat particular about some of the cook ware, like when they go after a seasoned skillet trying to get "all that black gunk" off of it!

I do believe one of the hardest things to do is to coordinate a team effort with a bunch of people that just want to help or insist on hovering. With proper planning and a lot of patience you can plan a less formal dinner where a lot of tasks can be assigned to those offering to help leaving you to concentrate on the specifics.

Cooking for a girl on a date is sooo cool I think . A signature dish you know you do well .
Something like a Red lamb curry in coconut milk . The kitchen should be A place of laughter and fun .

So....tell us what is special about your knives. Pots and pans can be damaged with misuse....what could anyone possibly do to your knives?

My knifes are they key tool in my profession.. being that all my knife are made from the best quality alloy all imported from Japan.. I have more money invested in all my knifes then my entire pot and pan collection.. A single knife will cost a minimum of $400.00.. Most people will pick up a knife and not think about it as a tool but as a can opener..

I dont mind if someone is helping get things out or put things away if asked. Also things like setting timers or preheating ovens is very helpful! What I dont like is someone trying to change the way I'm going to do something. If they have a great idea for turkey casserole, and I'm making turkey noodle casserole, we can try their idea next time or they can write the recipe down.

I hear ya about the clean up. I have certain pans that can't have scrubbers on them, metal utensils etc. I know someone is just trying to "help" when they get the spoon out to stir ..... but it just gives me the heebees .

I dont mind people seeing how I do things though, I keep no secrets and some people have even said they can't believe how easy it is when they see me make stuff. I see no problem with that.

Oh and the best knives and steel come from Sheffield!

I don't mind someone else in the kitchen. I enjoy cooking and what I do for a living and in both places enjoy showing off what I can do and keep up a conversation at the same time. Occasionally it leads to a missed step, but that's the way things go. I don't mind help with some things like making salads, stirring or table setting. I hate just sitting around doing nothing and will at least volunteer in another kitchen and if somebody volunteers in mine I try to find something they can do without getting in the way. Cleaning help is fine but don't touch my cast iron. Constructive ideas are welcome, that's one way I can learn new things to try some other time. Tell me I am doing it wrong, and your serving might get burnt/over spiced/raw whatever

Cooking with some one as part of a date is great!

I hear you OP! You are certainly not alone on that one. Hell, i could murder someone who even dares to so much as glance by my pot. And if you DARE to put your finger or spoon in and taste...you better be prepared to RUN because i am serving that persons HEAD on a silver platter next time!!!
