I have no idea, why the title changed on this thread? I was looking on the internet and I saw that Bile is coming out with a new album, for anybody who is into Bile. I got into their music from watching the movie Strangeland. OK , I'll admit that was not the best horror film I've seen, but the partwhere they perform was really good.

If I may, would Fear Factory be considered Industrial by any standards? As far as the genre is concerned, Fear Factory is the only industrial/metal band I have actually liked over the years. I've been an avid Pantera fan for over 12 years (yes since I was seven) and only discovered FF about five years ago. Until then, I had actually disliked industrial for it's lack of heaviness for my standards. I've always liked and admired metal music for its tenacity, and it were bands like Pantera, Black Label Society, Testament, Corrosion of Conformity, etc., that really ushered me into the whole scene.

I find myself starting to drift a little more toward Industrial now and then though. : )

To Ghost Label Society reply,
I never really listen to much Fear Factory music, I cannot give a honest answer. This is just my opinion, but I think Fear Factory is heavy metal that incorporate industrial style. There use to be alot of industrial bands that incorporate metal into their music, but alot of it is electronic now. There is nothing wrong with metal, personally I like it as much as anything else I listen to. I grew up on metal, industrial, and punk. Industrial music has alot of intensity that can match metal in alot of ways. This is just my opinion, but Psychopomps for instance uses a punk/metal/ industrial sound, and I think they can match Slayer for intensity. It never hurts to have a variety of music taste. In every genre of music there is good bands and shitty bands, it is really up to the individual to decide what is good for themselves.

Fear Factory is more metal than anything else.

Rhys Fulber does the synths for them though...

I see a lot of terms thrown around here under the title of industrial. But there is a difference between bands like Demon Hunter, NIN, and the likes of VNV Nation. Someone already mentioned this but there is a difference.

Industrial Metal: Skinny Puppy, Demon Hunter, Static-X, etc etc (you know.. Metal!)
EBM: VNV Nation, Dismantled, Covenant, etc.. (utilizes programming, keys and synth extensively to create often thick textures of sweeping melodies many times with a very danceable beat)
Industrial: Argyle Park, KMFDM, Celldweller, NIN etc.. though NIN and Celldweller vasilate between styles a lot.

Industrial in it's purest sense would be music composed mainly with sounds and textures that are or simulate the clanks, buzzes, grinding, and whir type sounds you would find in an industrial work zone or factory. There would be little melodies and no guitar riffs and power chords.

I hope i don't sound like an elitist. I just wanted to share what I've learned. Many bands cross lines a lot too so it can be hard to pin them to one style. Bottom like we all like some of the same cool music regardless of how we classify it.

My favorites: WUMPSCUT, VNV NATION, DISMANTLED, CELLDWELLER, BELLA MORTE, IN STRICT CONFIDANCE I lean more to EBM. xoxo hugs

For myself, I lean towards the EBM side of industrial.

Some faves include: VNV Nation, Covenant, Assemblage 23, Apoptygma Berzerk (old school, not this new EMO shit he's doing now).

Of the aggro-tech stuff: Funkervogt, VAC

But the new darling of the industrial scene is noise/terror EBM such as: Cenotype, Converter, Suicide Commando, Hocico, Amduscia, Grendel, Dawn of Ashes

I would totally recommend Grendel - Harsh Generation as a good start into the genre, as well as Dawn of Ashes - The Crypt Injection.

I've been a fan ever since my friend had me listen to Skinny Puppy Bites on LP. I'm a huge fan of all forms of electronic music, lately i've immersed myself into futurepop bands like VNV Nation, Apoptygma Berzerk, Covenant and Razed in Black.

Wow, I feel like one of the grandfathers.. here..

Industrial is truly my favorite.. I DJ, (ok used to)

Industrial takes from all genre's and makes it, its own.

You have Neo Classical industrial, which has classical elements, some light distortion, some sampling, There are several French bands I have come across which were rather interesting, but not my cup of tea.

Goth-industrial - is potentially classed as Darkwave.., and this has been touched

Electro Metal Crossover- This covers bands like K-Nitrate, Audio War(some),cubanate, Think about Mutation, Biopsy, etc etc etc. These bands usually use sampled guitar sounds or incorporate live guitar for ..(no duh) live music sets.

Metal Industrial - KMFDM, Pig(later stuff especially), Ministry, Die Krupps, Tolchok, Malhavoc, Gothminister, chemlab, Swamp Terrorists etc etc.. I need not to explain.

EBM, This would be more like Northborne, Icon of Coil, VNV (which is more ebm than a darkwave feel based on solid dancefloor appeal), Amduscia, Leatherstrip.. etcetera...

Technoindustrial - There is so much and this actually steals from all the sub genre's of Industrial to remixes and bands releasing unusual tracks not normally within their normal genre.

Psytrance - I mention this mostly because I have come across some ULTRA hard metal dance tracks with synth that absolutely remind of techno meeting Fear Factory/Ministry

This is a matter of taste, and it takes a lot of research... but I have picked up a dozen compilations which have some brutally heavy metal techno.

Rap-Industrial - remember Meat Beat Manifesto, consolidated, how about Scapegoat?

Industrial is IMHO, the richest of the genre's of music.. since it steals from so many elements.. The sad part I barely even covered the genre with what I mention here...

Take care

There are about 10,000 sub-genres of music these days... you should look at the "electronica" thread a while back. I think artists just pull new genres out of their butts so that they can claim they are "unique".

For ME, there is only one thing that separates Metal from Industrial, and that is, industrial replaces the guitar with keyboards. It's interesting because I really, really dislike 95% of metal but adore Industrial.

I'm sure there are 10 people who will now post exceptions to my guitar vs. keyboard rule, but I will stick by my definition.

I love industrial music just as much as metal, but I know that it will be futile for me to even try to categorize many of the bands that have already been listed. Like heavy metal, industrial has changed a lot over the years and covers a wide array of sub genres. Rather than try to define something so complex, I'll just go ahead and sound off some of my favorite bands, old and new alike:

Old school: Cubanate, Ministry, KMFDM, My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult, Bile, Wumpscut, Pigface, Chemlab.

Newer and up-coming bands: Unter Null, Dawn of Ashes, Xentrifuge, Reaper, Razed in Black, Hocico, Tactical Sekt.

Ministry pre Psalm69 album were a fine example of Industrial, "The Land of Rape and Honey" and "The mind is a terrible thing to taste" are classic industrial albums then they kind of went down the boring mundane heavy rock path after those albums. I listen to alot of FLA, F242, VAC, RIB and so on but consider those bands to be more electronic than industrial. I love alot of EBM (electronic body music) which kinda crosses over into the Industrial scene, I'm hooked on Combichrist at the moment!

Industrial has many different variants, which makes it such a diverse and rich genre of music IMO.

Check out Chu Ishikawa of Der Eisenrost (Japanese muscian who did the soundtrack to Tetsuo the iron man), the main theme tune is a fine example of *pure* old skool industrial.

Ps. (I saw Ministry in the UK last month on their final tour, love ya Al!).

I heard a Skinny Puppy album once. It sounded just like the noise that the machinery at work makes, so I guess that is why they call it "industrial."

"one of the best conerts: einsturzende neubaten at the bowery ballroom. i can't remember the date but I think it was before 2000."

Um.. no. Their best show was Perkins Palace (pasadena, CA) sometime in the late 80's. That's the show where Blixa poured a can of gasoline on the stage and lit it. That show suposedly got them kicked out of the USA for about 10 years.

Now *that* was a fun show!
