Genitorturers, definitely. Also pretty much anything by Gary Numan, 'specially the later stuff and the 'Hybrid' era remixes.

I'd add Rammstein and Laibach as personal favourites, and some Black Metal crossover stuff like Enslaved and Helheim ;)

By the way, my favourite quote about Industrial music I saw years ago in the Sunday Times: defined as "heavy Metal with drum machines"...

genres are NOT opinion!

Industrial hasn't really expanded very far since 1980. There's stuff like what was on Industrial Records (along with some early Einsturzende Neubauten, early SPK, and a few others), which is best just left as Industrial. There was another thing starting to boom in the late 70s, Noise, with Merzbow, Maurizio Bianchi... and those are the oldest ones I can think of really, but also Power Electronics was developing with Sutcliffe Jugend and Whitehouse. The only REAL expansions on Industrial music are noisy ambient acts and martial Industrial.

Then in the early 80s, Front 242 came around mixing Industrial Techniques and sounds into a dance friendly new sound called EBM... and let's not forget Psychic TV, best described as simply Post-Industrial, by blending Industrial sounds and techniques into various different genres often creating a pretty unique sound.

Then in the late 90s, Ministry decided he was through with Synth Pop and Post-Industrial ("Twitch" was pretty much a pop album with lots of samples, much like NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine") and decided to add guitars and metal elements with his samples. Mostly, it was called Industrial Metal, but so was the very different sound of Godflesh, which is closer to what Industrial Metal should sound like. Eventually, bands that did stuff similar to Ministry's work from the late 80s to 93 came to be called American Coldwave. Meanwhile bands with keyboard synths and occasional samples would be called Industrial Rock and Industrial Metal despite having very little Industrial about them.

Then there's Nu-Metal, Experimental Rock with Metal and other outside influences, occasionally a band will take influence from Skinny Puppy or Frontline Assembly, who have both put out Industrial tracks but for the most part... are either EBM or general Post-Industrial.

In the end, it all boils down to ignorance and people being sheep. Many Americans thought anything with distorted beat was Industrial in the late 80s (probably longer than that).

Anyway, if more people knew about Noise and Power Electronics, I doubt most of the shit called Industrial, Industrial Rock, or Industrial Metal, would still be called those.

apparently I can't edit... or I can't find the button...

I've been waiting 2 years for Bile's new album to come out :'(

As for my own tastes in anything remotely Industrial related include American Coldwave above all else, with Noise and Power Electronics following, and general Post-Industrial (think Ministry's "Twitch", early Psychic TV, NIN's "Pretty Hate Machine", PIG's early work, and Darling Kandie)... also Death Robot music like Extermination Zone, Tourian, Carnivore Adaption, and Fire Drone 16.

I still remember seeing Skinny Puppy, their Too Dark Park show on acid. Nivek Ogre was in some kind of tree like aparatus with long arms and he teetered out and stretched his arms out over the audience. Pretty much freaked me out. Awesome stuff!

A couple years later after a Pig Face show my friends and I went on their tour bus and hung out. I remember Mary Byker being really funny. Ogre gave us some absolut vodka and some microwave pop corn that we called "Ogre Redenbockers".

Most of those guys started to followed us to my van to head to a dance club, when their manager came running after us yelling "Oh, hell no!" It was all pretty funny and a great night.

I like Clock DVA's song, "Sound Mirror". One of my favs. Also most the other bands listed that had a dark electronic dancy sound.

wow and i was just looking at the metal thread when i thought "whoa it'd be awesome if they had an industrial thread"

I looove industrial music, and much like the dude who posted he was into metal and someone thought he was a devil worshipper, it's sad that industrial gets the same connotation.

I'm more on the industrial techno side: My faves include wumpscut, hocico, combichrist, vnv nation, dulce liquido, namnambulu, the cruxshadows, and blutengel.

genres and sub-genres... bleh they all give me a headache. I don't see the point.

I've gone all over the place within industrial, recently i've been listening to Throbbing Gristle, Coil, NIN, Skinny Puppy (and related projects), Einsturzende Neubauten, Soisong, Ministry, VNV Nation...

say I wanted something that sounded like NIN, if I looked for Industrial, I could get anything from Throbbing Gristle, Maurizio Bianchi, Covenant, Chemlab, Panzer Division, Distorted Memory, Sutcliffe Jugend, or even MSI.

There is no good reason those bands who, for the most part, sound almost completely different from each other should be called the same thing.

That's why subgenres are helpful and douchebags that don't know shit are not (not saying that to you personally, just in general).

I can't believe we got almost to the bottom of page 2 before Combichrist was even mentioned.

PIG, KMFDM, VNV Nation, Gothminister... all good in my book, if not all strictly 'industrial'. De/Vision and Assemblage 23 are more EBM in my book, but who's counting... love 'em... nice retro sound.

How about Cubanate?

Industrial can be defined by the abrasive, aggressive, and mechanically repetitive beat textured by sound experiments include: use of found instruments, field recordings, dialogue samples, and tape manipulation. It quickly developed into forms more suitable for the dance floor.

Yah, Throbbing Gristle were the guys that had a label called "Industrial Records," but at the heart of what GPO was doing was the mechanically repetitive beat, it was music for the blue collar urban outcast. It was influenced by the consistent clanging of machines and the noisy din of the industrial district. There were bands like This Heat, DNA, and Suicide working with similar levels of noise and dissonance. Even the power noise subgenre can be characterized away from the noise genre at large by that beat.

Anyways, my favs:
Skinny Puppy, Imminent Starvation, P.A.L., Gridlock, Ministry, Einsturzende Neubauten, Front 242, FiendFlug, Cabaret Voltaire, Converter, Controlled Bleeding, And One, Coil, Neutronic, Foetus, Muslimgauze, and Laibach.

BTW, Big Black, one of my favourite bands, usually defined as post-hardcore/noise rock.

Just like to add, check out Android Lust (track called Stained) and Aesthetic Perfection (track called Living The Wasted Life (fat feckin beats!)).

I loved Cubanate back in the early 1990's, they kinda went down hill after the "Antimatter" album unfortunately for me. I've also been exploring more 80's electronic/industrial acts... Found a gem of a track called New York by The Microchip League.

omfg, best thread ever! i was starting to get scared i was the only rivet on PoF! hahaha. i'm surprised no one mentioned bands like Die Warzau, Leather Strip, Die Krupps, Chemlab, etc.

soooo many amazing bands out there. what i love too, is that a lot of Visual Kei (japanese metal) is just like Ministry/KMFDM. bands like D'espairs Ray, Dir En Grey, etc.

Raymond Watts and Sascha K are two musicians i could listen to on repeat pretty much forever.

It's kind funny. Back in the 90's people lumped any heavy music that keyboards into Industrial, and now in the 00's people lump anything with distorted, chunky, riffing guitars into metal. What one guitar player does doth not metal make.

I love industrial music.
I was really into techno music...
But I like my techno more melodic and less repetitive than most.
I also like my techno to be angry and full of energy.

And to me, a lot of industrial is angry non-repetitive techno music.

If it's not on industrial records it is not industrial.

These are the only industrial bands there are;

Monte Cazazza
Throbbing Gristle
Surgical Penis Klinik
Chris and Cosey
Clock DVA
Caberet Voltaire
The Leather Nun

and but only a few others.

Everything you listed is EBM, SynthGoth, or Harsh EBM.
