| Metal. Posted: 11/27/2007 6:42:03 AM | Ok well growing up in a scene that was cool as hell during the 90's in the dfw area. I grew up in JOE"S GARAGE! Those of ya'll who know of the place or have actually been "THERE". It is the certain starting place of a very cool band from Pantego TX. But as yall were saying there is not any good bands out right now it is kinda a dead scene. But Im sure one will come out and start it all again. But it will I think never be as cool as the things of the 80-90's. I think sys o down has some cool stuff n likin park but they are corperate bands lol. Same goes for Metallica they were it b4 black then WTF? Oh well we all have cd's n ipods to keep them fresh in our minds lol.

anyone to go to see kataklysm last night?
|
| Metal. Posted: 11/28/2007 10:33:37 PM | | It's not that there aren't decent new bands today. There's plenty, you just have to dig for them, which brings me to my point. There isn't any substantial steps forward in metal right now. In the early 90's you had new genres in the works. Metal is dead in a sense right now, in that it is not evolving. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 11/29/2007 2:44:26 PM | all of those bands suck except for darkthrone, immortal, graveland and enslaved. and all of them were there since the beginning of black metal. just because theyre still around today doesnt mean i put them under the category of "todays black metal"
please, kill yourself. :)
|
| Metal. Posted: 11/29/2007 4:33:56 PM | | Hmmm, instead of asking others to kill themselves, it seems logical to just remove yourself from others' presence! Just the fact that there IS a metal thread on this site is pretty cool. I am glad we're talking a little bit; disagreements can be dealt with in an adult manner. And as far as the "beginning" of black metal; I do believe Venom actually coined the phrase even though their sound is radically different than what people think of today! | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 11/29/2007 6:32:30 PM | what im saying, is, bands like immortal and darkthrone are completely different then black metal nowadays. just because these bands are still active, doesnt mean theyre generic crap like the rest of BM.
Black metal died in the late 90's. the feeling wasnt there anymore; the REASON behind black metal is gone...the "driving force", if you will.
so in a sense, it did die. Todays black metal shouldnt even be CALLED black metal. whether it sounds like it or not, it IS NOT black metal. its hard to accept, but its so true.
not all of new black metal sucks, just please, dont call it black metal, cuz it isnt. and hun, we all know venoms story and their role in black metal.

| Metal. Posted: 11/29/2007 7:54:55 PM | Funny when i read folks talking about metal because Metal in all it's many genre whether it's power metal, trash metal or whatever metal is at it's strongest as it ever been. A lot of bands are out there and yes not everyone will like everything but it's definitely more mainstream.
The idea of mainstream metal in itself is almost silly thought. I mean not sure i would want to see my favorite headbanger band like Manowar or Iron Maiden appear on Regis to promote a tour....
I recall when i was in high school that the good metal band out there could be counted on one or two hand at the most! There was next to no Scandinavian metal and if there was it sure wasnt know and played in Montreal! I dont need to name those bands but a lot of the metal today if you ask me could be derivated from those bands, the sounds, the lyrics all come from a handful of metal band that created the genre and make what it is today.
Metal is FAR from dead and i cant wait to be 90 years old and play Aces's High while driving and scaring some old ladies!! HAHAHA

| Metal. Posted: 11/29/2007 8:30:56 PM | I personally(and yes I get TONS of shit for this from friends) get tired of a lot fo bands really fast when I hear them a lot, even great bands that I love. Some examples of bands I once loved and now consider completely irrelevant are Anthrax, Machine Head, Metallica, Manson, (and here is the big one that makes people hate me) Pantera...god i am so tired of hearing about them, the....I am obsessed with hearing unique new sounds to the point I can even enjoy a lot of things i once loved anymore. Super into doom metal right now, especially this amazing band Loss from nashville find them on my*(space slash lossdoom...i also think katatonia and soilwork need t be the two biggest bands on the planet. ive been really into music that is dark without being heavy too Crippled Black Phoenix Mogwai and Dax Riggs are super incredible awesome.... Another metal band that i think should be huge is Gojira...... | |

| Metal. Posted: 12/5/2007 7:14:13 PM | | It's interesting sometimes, after you find an act that you enjoy very much, leaving yourself that extra album to get at a later date. I've had all of Bathory's material for a while, except for Nordland I, which I just got today. I'm having an excellent listen atm. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 12/5/2007 10:06:44 PM | | Gojira is pretty great, but I find Soilwork to be extremely weak; anyone like Witchcraft, Cult of Luna or Bethlehem? | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 12/6/2007 12:28:29 AM | Not evolving?
Into Eternity's new album, The Scattering of Ashes. I think that can be considered a huge landmark in both death metal and progressive metal. I personally don't think there hasn't been such a breakthrough in the prog-death genre since Cynic's Focus.
On the subject of taking metal to new places:
Wintersun: Melodic Death Metal/Melodic Black Metal/Progressive Death Metal/Power Metal. People have a hard time classifying them. Trouble classifying and the ability to fit into so many genres like that automatically equals a band that is treading on new ground.
Agalloch: Agalloch are probably one of the most original bands I've ever heard. Every album is a masterpiece in its own right and does something completely new with the dark metal and folk metal genres.
Ayreon: Every album adds some kind of new element onto the last, and the sound becomes more and more unique all the time.
Machinae Supremacy: Pioneered the genre of SiD Metal, an innovative form of electronic metal that probably has a lot more bands coming to it in the future.
Necrophagist: I listen to lots of death metal, and I've yet to see a band that are as technical and incorporate as many neoclassial influences as Necrophagist do. Their genre could even be described as neoclassical death metal at times.
Orphaned Land: Progressive/Avant-Garde metal based around doom metal and traditional Middle Eastern folk music.
Unexpect: Who the hell even knows how to describe this. Just listen to any song by them and you'll see what I mean.
I could go on and on, but my point is that metal is evolving and new bands are treading on new ground that other metal bands haven't even touched every day. Avant-Garde and unclassifiable bands are become more and more common, which I think shows that the genre actually is evolving.

| Metal. Posted: 12/6/2007 2:32:22 PM | | I love my rock & metal music guys but....Is it just me or does anyone else find the names of death & black metal bands embarrassing....!! | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 12/6/2007 2:41:20 PM | | Haha yeah...death and black metal bands do have some pretty stupid names sometimes. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 12/6/2007 11:21:31 PM | yup I love METAL...lately been into Divine Heresy, the drummer is very wicked and the guitar player is an amazing player...brutal,fast and aggressive..ahhhhhh thats how i like it. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 12/7/2007 11:56:49 AM | the good metal of the 80's and 90's will never come back, it was so brilliant that it can not be done again, sure! the same with guitar players .
great bands of old like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Metallica, etc still release new albums, but they are crappy if compared to the old ones.
anyway, the best place to play metal is Europe, in fact most american bands enjoy and feel quite better coming here to play, we are really loyal
also some European bands like Iron Maiden are the best that man has ever seen
|
| Metal. Posted: 12/8/2007 8:10:03 AM | Love my death/black metal but right now grindcore/goregrind etc is what i'm into and being australian we have some great bands pumping this out. Going on about band names this is where it just gets crazy bands as Anal**** **** I'm dead etc etc. Also i find a lot of these bands are using drum machines which is good cause the beat is so god damn fast (Just the way I like it). well i way to tired to think atm 3am just got home from a gig. I also agree BM is not dead jus need to look pat all those shot bands making rubbish and look underground where the good metal lies.
well god night all \m/ | |

| Metal. Posted: 12/10/2007 3:37:19 PM | Metal as a whole has been consistently popular for the last 25+ years, but different sub genres rise and fall.
Currently the biggest sub genre is Gothic Metal, with bands like Nightwish, Epica, Coronatus, Within Temptation, Passionworks, Ghost Brigade and Leaves Eyes becoming more popular.
Having said that, the best album of the year by a mile for me (and several reviewers) has been Primordial's 'To The Nameless Dead'. Who would have thought that the best metal album of the year would be made by a band from that hotbed of heavy rock...
Dublin!
