I don't mean the amount of bands, I mean the amount of sales. I run an online record and CD shop specialising in metal, amd over the past few months I've sold more Gothic Metal albums than any other particular genre. That may well have to do with the fact that Nightwish have released a new album as well as re-issuing a lot of their older stuff and there have also been excellent new albums from Epica, Opeth and Amorphis, but generally speaking, Gothic Metal has been growing in popularity over the past 18 months or so more than any other genre.

Metal is as good today as it was back in the day. Listen to some Arch Enemy, Hate Eternal, Dying Fetus and Blood Bath. Metal is still great. It's just heavier, faster and more evil.

Iron Maiden rules. They are the best.
I betrayed them a little in college when I was obsessed with Sepultura, but I came to my senses eventually.

i've never really been good at classifying the types of metal i like, though my two fav bands right now are megadeth and arch enemy. i like some as i lay dying, all that remains, opeth, children of bodom, shadows fall, trivium, etc. metal in all its forms in my opinion is the best. what better show of skill, then wicked guitar solos? i'm more into the music then the lyrics, like arch enemy, i love the way they play music, how they integrate with each other to make a unique sound. anyone else got some hints on some decent bands?

Metal is still alive, but I think a lot of the good stuff is coming from over in mainland Europe and Scandinavia now... bands like Hammerfall who are a really good back to roots metal band, totally awesome!

Personally I'm still enjoying listening to old stuff, but it would be nice to have more decent new music to listen to, but I'm trying to broaden my listening habits into other genres... sticking with the whole alternative side of music you've got things like industrial and weird things like orchestral metal to take a gander at...

Personally I've taken a liking to weird orchestral metal type things, especially the stuff by Arjen Lucassen... Ayreon, Star One, Stream of Passion... then you've got other bands like Avantasia, Nightwish and Sonata Arctica

I used to do mucho graphic design work pertaining to the 80's/early 90's Metal (with a capital "M") scene...Since I was in my twenties and early thirties back then, the Metal Era had been a very influential portion of my life, and need I add....livelyhood...

I do have to agree with xafier about how metal bands in Europe and Scandinavia being better. Even though I think Hammerfall is pure horse shit. :P

But personally it depends on the band if they are good and one thing I started to notice is that the production quality of recent albums are good but to me feels too polished. Doesn't sound raw that and no soul. I like older albums because it has that nice grit sound that sounds warm instead of cold.

The late 80's / Early 90's were a golden age for rock music in general.

I think the word "Metal" is an over used term to describe rock music. Personal tastes aside, I remember when Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, Def Leppard etc were all called "Metal", when they are just good fun time rock bands.

People seem to think that anything with long hair & a loud guitar is "Metal". If the style of music is rock, funk, blues, ballads, rap, punk... or whatever.

Rock music will always evolve, from the Glam & Thrash of the 80's, the Grunge of the 90's, the Nu Metal of the 2000's, & the Emo of today....even though I am understanding it less & less these days .

I have been listening to metal for about twenty years now since I was thirteen. I have seen alot of changes in the metal scene. Nice thing about scenes are when people are into when it is popular, and when it is not they go to something else. I think metal bands these days are more than willing to experiment with their sound then twenty years ago. However I do believe the nu metal scene was a joke. I could never get into their music, but I do admit I did had high hopes for Slipknot which they became disappointing and forgettable. I mean how many hardcore Slipknot fans even still listen to their music, I'm sure there is probadly a few fans 1 or 2 , 3 tops maybe. Slayer probadly the first extreme metal band I listen to that led me to other stuff like Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Cemetary, Venom, and alot more. Anymore I listen to alot of death, black, grind and a few other genres. I love listening to the old bands on top of the new bands. Some of the newer bands of the past few years I like is High on Fire, Pig Destroyer, and All Shall Perish. I am always open to new bands simply I either like them or don't. Where I live there is not alot of people into extreme metal. Most people around here that was into metal was nu metal and there was no way I could relate to them. If I do read metal magazines it is usually Metal Maniacs , or Unrestrained. Like any kind of music it is up to yourself to decide what band is good for you. I think this will be a good thread to introduce bands that other people may not be aware of. :

It's kind of funny how alot of nu metal bands are not heard of anymore. That or they changed their sound.

I noticed some metalcore bands are showing a thrash influence. I do have to relate to misfit1993, my town is quite dominate in spin kicks and girl pants. There is some people my age that listen to some metal bands but nothing extreme, probably Slayer or one of the metalcore bands is as extreme they'll go.

Metal will never be the same as it was, but hell, I'll be damned if I'm not gonna try and bring it back.

British mainstream metal ftw! Ask me about my band :P

Depending on what you're into there are many such 'golden ages' of metal. For me the greatest was the mid-to-late 90's and early 2000's which formed the golden age of progressive metal with the likes of Lemur Voice, Ice Age, ARK, Dali's Dilemma, Mullmuzzler and Digital Ruin picking up where the likes of Dream Theater, Shadow Gallery, Fates Warning and Spock's Beard left off. Sadly all of the bands mentioned in the first instance are now defunct :(

I would also say we're currently riding the tail end of a 'golden age' of symphonic metal with bands like Angra, Rhapsody, Kamelot, Symphony X, Adagio, Blind Guardian and Nightwish all going from strength to strength and forging a legacy which will be difficult for any future bands to live up to.

The great thing about metal is that, once you get beyond the initial shock factor (especially with more extreme bands like Psycroptic, Behemoth, Pig Destroyer, The Berzerker et al) there is actually a lot of depth to many of the better bands and the proliferation of the internet has probably helped metal grow more than any other major musical genre. While the Powers That Be™ tried to wipe it out with their grunge and hip hop, metal has found a way to flourish beyond the grasp of mainstream media and I am confident metal is finally here to stay.

Symphony X is a good prog band.. A friend introduced me to Angra, only listened to a couple songs but I liked them.

Check out Mercenary.. good power metal band with prog influence. Their latest album The Hours That Remain is ****ing nice.

Into Eternity's new album, The Scattering of Ashes. I think that can be considered a huge landmark in both death metal and progressive metal.

That's so f*cking awesome to see people talking about Into Eternity like that. I remember back in the mid-90's going to Tim's gigs when he was in Centuries Beneath playing the small clubs. Brings back memories of the metal scene in Regina in the 90's. Those were some good times indeed. Tim definitely paid his dues... it's awesome to see it paying off. Great guy to hang out with too.

Metal Dead?

Try going to Eastern Europe where its hard and heavy still. You consider yourself a Metalhead? Well if so get your ass to Germany for the Metal Festival. Oh man Oh man, I wish I could remember the entire weekend.

There's some good knowledge of bands up here - well done!!

I'm in a band myself (metal of course) - called RSJ. We've toured with The Berzerker, Funeral For A Friend, Biohazard, Raging Speedhorn and loads more.

We've been likened to Will Haven meets Meshuggah.

keep your eyes open on upcoming tours. There are a lot of them coming through this area in the next 4 months. I have already bought tickets to the Killswitch Engage tour, the As I Lay Dying tour, The Down tour, The Devil Driver tour which is their first headlining tour, and The final Ministry tour ever.

Also if you want to find a lot of new bands check out www.pandora.com and set up a radio station, it will find every band under the genre you select.

All this talk on metal has made me reflect on the old days. I remember when there was two types of crowds, you have your hair metal fans and your extreme metal fans. Not only the music, but their looks as well sets them apart. Spandex vrs. Bulletbelts, To this day I still hate the hairmetal scene, to me it was so fake. I'll admit I did like
Guns &Roses Appetite For Destruction, and some of Motley Crue's early stuff. I think this is why I hated the nu-metal scene so much it reminded me of hair metal. I was only in jr high when hair metal was popular, but when I got into high school grundge pretty much killed off the hair metal scene. No more hairspray, and spandex!!! When hair metal died the fans traded in their spandex for jeans, sweaters, and flannels. People are so eager to be popular that they are happy to give up their individualism for sheep mentality. Metal will never die, it may be spot lighted time to time, but it will always has it's underground scene. As long Death, Black, Grind, Thrash, Progressive, and etc. has a fan base it will always be around. So fans alike lets keep it REAL!!!

new metal bands are born every day. just because they dont have the pyrotechnics on stage of the old bands, or the hair, doesnt make them any less metal.

check out Quo Vadis. FANTASTIC death metal band from Quebec.
