| Metal. Posted: 1/15/2008 8:20:38 AM | I agree above with Balsafer... Within Temptation are rapidly growing on me ! May have something to do with the fact that Sharon their singer is a bit better looking than most singers going around ! Their songs are plentiful on Youtube.
I'm off to see Iron Maiden in Melbourne in 3 weeks... hoping to secure a Sydney ticket as well. First time they've been here since 1992, so should be a fun night !

From what I saw. I saw Emperor on a record label site and it was a current photo of them together. As far as a new album, I don't know. Since I've been reading about Ihsahn's Hardingrock group. I'm kind of interested in that.

| Metal. Posted: 1/20/2008 8:19:30 AM | The metal will live on! Honestly though it's gotta be tough to come up with fresh things when most of the old school metal bands already did everything. And that goes the same for any type of music really.
For me personally my fav metal band right now is Lamb Of God.

| Metal. Posted: 1/20/2008 4:17:22 PM | A few years back I came across a disc. The band's name I can't remember for sure, I think they were called Black or Flat Black. They were mixing death metal with a southern rock rhythm. They were unsigned at the time, so I hope they do get a record deal. I thought they were really good and with a refreshing sound. I also read on the net Cannibal Corpse and Deicide will be coming out with new albums this year. I thought their last albums were better than the last couple previous albums. | |

| Metal. Posted: 1/20/2008 9:37:15 PM | Metal will never die...I'm living proof...I have been kicking around in the underground scene since the late 80's...Sure, it gets its slow times, but there will always be people into it...
The problem with metal right now is that it is way over saturated...too many crappy bands are out there because of the technology...Seems like anyone with pro tools and a drum machine will record something and put it out...No more doing demos, building a following, trading stuff, helping other bands, etc...
Currently I am a touring musician and play in a few death metal bands...there is both good and bad things about the current scene...But I still do it...

| Metal. Posted: 1/21/2008 7:43:37 AM | Thrash has always been my favourite sub-genre of metal, however some rubbish i've heard over recent years that calls itself Thrash is really crap.
There are a lot of bands out of the Thrash genre that never split up; there are some that have jumped on the bandwagon and reformed to do some shows which is great. There are also some great new bands emerging too, you just have to dig around for them because they dont get rammed down your throat on the radio (if it gets played at all) like the Pop Star and X Factor rubbish.
I do not think there will ever be another "golden age" of metal in the sense that it will become really popular and mainstream again. Personally, I don't think i'd like that to happen because the music would just become diluted and milked to death just to make more ££$$ for the record companies.
Adding to the list of Thrash bands you mentioned, other notable bands for me here off the top of my head would be Xentrix, Sabbat, Sodom, Acid Reign, Onslaught, Testament, Overkill, Torture, Death Angel, Slammer.....the list seems endless!

I went to the Emperor show last year and the year before that, and I saw Immortal last year as well!
They put on one hell of a show, even when Emperor had technical difficulties, they still mange to entertain the audience
It sucks that Marduk can't play in the U.S. anymore because of their Visas, I hope they give them one more chance, its not like they are terrorist or something!
TAAKE was supposed to have a U.S. Tour planned, but he went to jail again and now there is no info on a U.S. tour!

| Metal. Posted: 1/26/2008 11:42:41 AM | | In response to the initial question, I don't think metal is anywhere near doomed, just expanding beyond control. The number of sub-genres within the category of metal are just outright ridiculous considering that there's more fusion now than ever before. I strongly believe that Progressive Metal is making it's scene bigger in the USA these days, and in fact always has had a strong underground. Avant Garde Metal is another big one that seems to gain cult followings in a short amount of time. I believe that every band starts out in the underground whether we like it or not, and yes, I do believe that they have to work their ways up to the top...but I feel as though the metal community is such a strong one, that most (decent sounding) bands get their break at one point or another. I discovered my favorite band, Symphony X, in 2000 when hardly anyone here in the US had heard of them and now they are all over the place on MTV2 and what not. I think word of mouth, and now myspace and internet blogs especially, have made it easy for people or bands to get recognized. I'm in (what I like to call) a Groove Progressive Technical Death Thrash band and being fairly new, I know we're going to start trying to use all the methods of getting out there. Even if we stick together and remain underground, I'd be content just so long as I can get people to hear the music. So with a strong underground, and a somewhat strong mainstream demographic, I don't think the metal age has weakened by any means, but rather just gotten more powerful. Obviously major record execs in this country haven't examined the fact that a lot of Eastern Europe and Japan are head over heels for it. Still, it remains strong regardless. | |

| Metal. Posted: 1/26/2008 8:29:43 PM | I've always had a predilection for heavy metal. But the problem is that it's so hard to find good heavy metal. I'm 33 and mostly like the 80's heavy metal. Something that involves great vocals, normal speed, GUITAR SOLOS. Dio is the word. Would also mention Steeler (with Malmsteen) and Joe Satriani. Are there any bands nowadays that are distinguished for having the following in place:
1) Rob Halford, Mark Boals, Dio -type vocals 2) riffs like those in such songs as 'Night People' by Dio and 'One' by Metallica and 'Into The Pit' by Fight (Rob Halford) 3) solos like those by Randy Rhoads, Joe Satriani, V.P. Campbell
If there are any bands whose heavy metal is in the same vein, please mention them. Thx.

| Metal. Posted: 1/27/2008 12:25:54 PM | | This is to xxxkikixxx reply. This is strictly my opinion and my opinion alone. I don't think todays metal is shitty at all. You might be thinking of more in lines of mainstream metal which I would agree with you. There is alot of underground bands out there who is keeping fresh and real. Like all music it has to progress in one form or another. If it doesn't it'll become stale, boring, and fade away. That is why metal will be around for a long time yet. Lets take Slayer for instance one of my faves. Not all people like their new stuff , I do. Slayer slowly progress to where they are now blending hardcore punk into their sound, but they remain true to who they are by not bowing down to Mtv or commercial radio. Alot of bands out there are experimenting with their sounds for some it works out and for others it doesn't. There is days I wish Metallica would go back to the Master of Puppets sound, but they are so far gone that it would probadly not work out. If James would put a muzzle on Lars mouth might put them in the right direction. Megadeth was starting to go down the same path, but Dave pull his head out of his ass and got it on straight by putting out World Needs A Hero and getting better ever since then. I think everybodys favorite bands sometimes put out shitty albums some point in their career. The question is did they learn from their mistakes and correct them on their follow up album? I do have a question for anybody who wants to answer it. What the hell is Mathcore? A few years ago some people at a music store recommend a band saying they are metal and the genre is mathcore and I been scratching my head ever since. What is it bands sing about basic math screaming top of their lungs 2+2 = 4 or what? Maybe it's time people cut back on the labels. Everytime a band comes up with something new people has to label it. When I was younger you had death, black, thrash, grind, and you get the picture. Nowadays they are all subgenre with subgenres on top of it. When will it end? As I write this I am listening to Black Funeral in my discman a pretty good black metal band. | |
