| Metal. Posted: 2/4/2008 8:09:19 AM | | Lately I've been digging the hell out of Autopsy. Great, disgusting old-school death metal. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/4/2008 6:46:24 PM | I banished metal from my collection the day South of Heaven came out from Slayer. It was so slow and lame I nearly cried. After that, it seemed like everything slowed down and became a double bass competition. For me, I always dig those syllable per beat, fast as can go music... early Slayer, early DRI, Cryptic Slaughter, Raw Power, Capitalist Casulaties... if it aint fast I bore quickly unless someone's just mind blowingly creative like later Gorguts.
I kind of left metal behind when I went to see Anthrax on Fistful of Metal tour and they didn't show up. I was going to go home but I noticed nobody was leaving. I stayed and was exposed to DRI and COC (who were the openers) when they were the real deal. That night changed my whole outlook on music, hardness, speed, and most importantly, spitting on that played out-sickening-over priced-rock star mentality. Yuck.

| Metal. Posted: 2/5/2008 5:02:31 PM | | Any fan of death metal should check out a band called "Burial", from the Netherlands. They have an album called "Relinquished Souls", and it reminds of Massacre. Totally killer. | |

I think slower metal can be way more evil, don'tcha think?

So what do you listen to now? Since you gave upon metal? I'm really curious.
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/6/2008 11:26:33 AM | I like BTBAM also. Good shit. Although, Silent Circus is still my favorite album. Alaska is good too, though.
Tommy Rogers...yum. (yes, that was my girly side kicking in...)

So what do you listen to now? Since you gave upon metal? I'm really curious. I probably should have been more clear earlier because a lot of the stuff I listen to is very metallic. The difference is that it is of a punk upbringing. Big metal is so overpriced and more often than not has nothing of any relevance to say in its lyrics. Most of the time you have no idea what they're writing about. Anyhow, I like a lot of what people would term to be "crust", "d-beat", or even "Swedish Hardcore." Foreign stuff like Driller Killer, Extreme Noise Terror, Diskonto, Totalitar, and domestic stuff like Capitalist Casualties, Disrupt, and Bumbklaatt.
If you want a link to check out my band, please feel free to email me here. I'm supposed to post links on here.
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/8/2008 12:39:18 PM | | Extreme Noise Terror is pretty sweet. I started getting into crust like Disfear and such. That and I like sludge bands like Neurosis, MINSK, Earthride, EYEHATEGOD, C.O.C, RWAKE, and many more. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/8/2008 5:42:05 PM | | I am a huge fan of Neurosis, and EYEHATEGOD. I have been waiting for a new album by EHG for the last couple of years, but last album that they put out that I know of is Preaching The Endtime Message. Which is basically a album with old songs and some live ones. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/9/2008 7:37:05 PM | Even though in the beginning of the 90's there were a crapload of amazing bands, I think that there are some pretty good bands today, such as:
a) Machine Head b) Behemoth c) High On Fire d) Enslaved
Just to name a few, they might not be as big as Slayer, Death and Mayhem were back in the day, but if you look hard enough you'll always find some wicked bands.
2nded.
Machine Head is ****ing amazing. I'm listening to them as I speak. (And their concerts rock too.) It's every bit as fierce and energetic as the oldskool metal bands you mentioned, and it gets your adrenaline pumping like no other. Takes a bit of digging around to find good music these days, since most good music are buried under a pile of generic crap

Yeah, I've been waiting for a new EYEHATEGOD album as well. But I've been enjoying their previous albums so I'll wait a little longer.
Neurosis is damn good. I've been listening to their Given To The Rising album a lot lately. It's a good album to listen to when you're buzzed and gives you the feeling that the world is going to end soon.
I'm also digging MINSK. I have one of their albums "Out Of The Center Which Is Neither Dead Nor Alive" it's a pretty sweet album check out the song "Holy Flower Of The North Star" pretty mellow in the beginning but gets REALLY heavy.
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/10/2008 11:43:43 AM | | Given To The Rising is a great album, but The Sun That Never Sets is better. Just my opinion and the dvd for The Sun That Never Sets is a visual treat. It reallys plays on a another level of consciousness. I've heard people say that TOOL is known for visuals, but I think Neurosis is better. I have nothing against TOOL, personally I like some of their stuff. Mainly the first 3 albums by them. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/11/2008 11:59:06 AM | I never been a big fan of tool.. Some of the songs I like, but in general never really cared. I have a friend that is very fanatical about Tool and would skip any concert just to see Tool.
I'll have to check out The Sun That Never Sets. I'm fairly new to sludge music and been listening to it a lot lately.
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/11/2008 5:26:52 PM | it's still there . . just because it's not taking the media spotlight doesn't mean it's not thriving . . I would say that it is in fact very healthy.
I would go so far as to say that it's good that it would be on the sidelines as far as mass comsumed media goes, there's far less of a chance that it would end up being formulated into a boybandesque "insert angsty rocker types here, here and here" deal and killing the real artists and the genre with gigantic piles of assembly line art

| Metal. Posted: 2/12/2008 4:37:30 AM | I love my metal and i dj for a company called section 8. "S8UK" we do alot of stuff in london.
i have to say my favs are:
RATM Snot Alice in chains Primus SKINDRED Down Tool Clutch
and a few other tracks here and there But theres so much more out there like the mars volta ect. Its a shame not many bands have a strong album. most have just a few good tracks of an album here and there.
Saying that you guys should check out sensor there pritty cool.
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/18/2008 7:52:04 AM | | Listening to the new Dismember album. Only other album I've heard of their's is "The God That Never Was". New album seems pretty decent, but not really sticking out to me quite just yet. | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/18/2008 1:36:53 PM | After scanning the several pages that responded to this, I realize that you are deluding yourselves. The new bands that you all mention are mere copies of what was once was. There is no new golden age of METAL....not death metal or thrash metal or any other kind of metal. Everything is the same...these new bands are playing the same old riffs and screaming the same old sh*....So if you really want some serious metal then go back to Metallica and Priest and Maiden and Slayer and Anthrax and Pantera because today's "metal" is just using the REAL metal to copy. If you are seriously interested in hardcore then go find bands like Sex Pistols, Virus, VanGogh's Ear. | |

You are so far off from the truth it's not even funny. the only bands copying anyone are shitty metalcore bands like trivium, most of the bands me and a few others mention don't steal anyone's riffs and nobody said anything about a "golden age" in metal =/. if you really think everyone is copying riffs and all the songs are the same, you really need your ears checked.
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/18/2008 7:25:41 PM | Go back to the original question which was about a golden age of metal and the possibility of a new golden age of metal.
Don't tell me about getting MY ears checked.... There is nothing new in Metal. I can get together with a bunch of musicians I know and we can play the same sh^t and just make a lot of noise.
Go to a head bangers ball....Or to OzFest...
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/18/2008 8:26:23 PM | There are a LOT of new bands that are playing different sounds. Sure, everything is reminiscent of something else, there is no way around that.. but you can't say everything sounds the same unless you don't really LISTEN to any metal and only like the "old stuff". That's ok, it happens at "our age". People "our age" go to Ozzfest and still get misty about Headbangers Ball. That isn't me at all. I have not stagnated, I've evolved and I love it. I'm still finding, seeing and digging new bands... but I did go see Blue Cheer last week. :D This week I will go see Black Cobra and next week I will go see Fu Manchu and the week after I will go see Orange Sunshine (which I am very excited about). | |
|
| Metal. Posted: 2/19/2008 2:29:37 AM | Fu Manchu? Why? I kid.
I agree about bands being reminiscent of an older band. There is no doubt about it, a lot of bands are going to sound somewhat similar or that of an older band which happens to be an INSPIRATION to them. MetallicA are big fans of Misfits and even drew upon Mercyful Fate for their progressive stuff.
Metal today, whether it's death, black, power, or any in that matter is still thriving. Newer bands are becoming more melodic or heavy and even technical.
I wouldn't even consider Sex Pistols hardcore at all. I would prefer Black Flag over Sex Pistols any day.
