A friend suggested I attend the Marc Rizzo (band) show with him thursday night. Not completely my bag, but a decent show. I didnt know the name from his Soulfly contributions, and I guess he was in Ill Nino(?) who ive never heard.

Regardless, they played a couple Sepultura covers(territory and propaganda from Chaos AD). Rizzos metal-style sorta reminds me of newer era Machine Head, and he also plays his share of technical/intricate acoustic spanish guitar on some instrumentals, while the bass player/drummer are off in jazz mode. Overall it was taste of something different.

I was glad to see Jay leno let Branford Marsalis off for the night to play bass for Rizzo(hehehehehe look-a-likes rule!). Can't say I was demanding my 8 dollars back at the end of the night, and pretty glad I went.

I don't mind Neurosis' given to the rising...a very intense album...and sophisticated too...
do you like bands like Blood AXIS?

I think we already are having another golden age. It's in the very early stages but bands like Opeth, Machine Head, Gojira, Mastodon, Baroness, Mistaken Element, Klone, SYL and a lot of others are bringing their own original and skillful brand of metal to the forefront.

I wish I agreed more with this.

Metal is certainly trying to experience another golden age right now. I'm just not sure that it's working.

Most of the "newer" bands (although most of these have actually been around for a good 10 years and are just now becoming popular) like Opeth and such are at least trying to bring something somewhat new to the table, but it's just never grabbed me as being anything spectacular.

Mastodon's another one that is definitely trying but just doesn't stand out to me as being anything that great. Although, everybody I know seems to disagree with that.

Strapping Young Lad were great when they first started, but they've never been quite the same since getting back together. None of the post-City albums have seemed to have had the same intensity or greatness as their predecessors.

Although I do like the fact that veteran bands that were once past their prime such as Machine Head have somehow found their muse again and are now turning out some of the best music of their entire careers.

And In Flames, to me at least, just continues to get better.

I'd love to see another golden age, but I'm just not seeing enough signs to make me believe it's coming any time soon.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Devin Townsend retired from SYL and DTB in may of last year?
I will have to disagree with you about new In Flames. Don't get me wrong, old In Flames was sick .I'm talking about ClayMan and Jester Race... their new stuff is disappointing to say the least.
I'm curious, does anyone here listen to Old Man's Child, Behemoth, Immortal, Necrophagist and such??

i would have to agree with her once colony/clayman/whoracle/black ash inheritance/jester race were done, so was the band, the music is ok, but not as great as those i've mentioned. behemoth, necrophagist, dimmu borgir(older stuff), bloodbath, suffocation, incantation, dying fetus, yes immortal i've heard of but never actually heard. all good stuff tho.

Some of the heavy bands today sound so much heavier than the ones you mentioned. Personally I think the players from the 80's and 90's were more proficient. Have you seen John 5 play, that guy can shred, no twang bar either.

The band that were mentioned are more technical than older bands. Nothing better than old school metal (Slayer, Pantera, Piledriver, Venom, etc) but there are newer bands out there with incredible talent. Sleep Terror and Old Man's Child are the two bands that come to mind, considering they are both side projects and both of them are 1 man bands.

I get so tired of people knocking newer In Flames just because it's more stripped down. Soilwork has run into the same problem as well in recent years.

Personally, I don't think In Flames really even got consistently interesting until Colony. Whoracle was hit and miss. The Jester Race had some decent stuff on it. Once you get into things like Subterranean and Lunar Strain, I just kind of don't care.

Granted, they have kind of made the same album 4 times in a row now stylistically just in varying degrees of quality (everything from Reroute up through the new one), but I really dig what they're doing now.

Devin Townsend seems to be constantly in and out of retirement. He's retired at least twice now that I know of. I think it varies from year to year with him. He's a bit wacky in the head, so it's hard to really say.

Old Man's Child used to be good. I don't know what they're even doing anymore. I kind of lost track of them. I assume Galder is still in Dimmu Borgir. But the Pagan Prosperity was great. I used to jam that all the time about 10 years ago.

I kind of lost track of Dimmu in recent years as well. I think the last album I bought was Death Cult Armageddon. Everything up through that, I really liked, though.

I don't get the appeal of Behemoth. Everybody and their mom likes Behemoth these days, and I just don't get it. To me, they're rather generic. They're not particularly bad, but they just don't stand out as being anything exceptionally note-worthy.

what do you think of neurosis they are quite new to me...

Neurosis-Enemy of the sun(1993) is really the album that did it for me. This easily makes a top 25 of the 90's list in my book. Long building/winding intros(10-12 minute songs). Enemy of the sun was an extremely dark and brooding album.

Through Silver in Blood(95 or 96) was a solid follow up. Crushing sound. Both these albums slowly grind you into pulp. I also dig the strange tracks/segways that they threw in between songs to mix it up a bit.

After that they changed thier formula a bit and dropped the drawn out long parts, which i feel are the Neurosis lifeblood. The really old Neurosis (1st couple records) was a hardcore/punk style. Regardless, those albums were alright in my book as well. In hindsight though if you dont hear em in progression(order wise) its hard to recognize those albums compared to newer stuff.

Souls at Zero(1992) was when Neurosis started to explore darker more plodding music. I havent listened to that in ages, but I recall there being some really good ideas expressed, but they hadnt honed thier craft completely though at that time. Looks like i have a way-back play-back on tap for the day.

Can't agree more on Mastadon. Sirius radio has mastadons****and balls firmly planted in thier mouths, but ive yet to find thier music enjoyable.

As for Devin/SYL, I think Townsend is one of the greatest metal visionaries i've stumbled across in the last 10 years or so. Its just that hes such an odd persona, that SYL doesnt always fit in the box for many. As for "post-City" era, the self titled was alright in my book....and Alien ended up as my favorite SYL. Alien was some sort of odd labyrinth to my ears. I always felt it was quite a skitzo/all over the map -album, and sure enough I learned later he was diagnosed with skitzophrenia during/after the making of the album.

The New black...uh switched gears almost completely but i found it to be a fairly good. I almost don't even consider it SYL, but there something about it that i really like. catchy as hell i guess.

@ Raphael.....
Every f***ing band you've named is generic shite, not just Behemoth.
I guess next we can expect you to call Dimmu Borgir black metal.
Get your ears and eyes away from MTV2 and Ozzfest and start listening to GOOD metal.

^ Thank you, captain elitist. I'll be sure to do that.

Sorry, but I prefer to think for myself and enjoy the bands that appeal to my own personal taste rather than just reciting the same typical expected, "Emperor sold out after In the Nightside Eclipse. If you disagree, you watch too much MTV and are not tr00 and kvlt. Hail Darkthrone!" drivel.

Everyone knows that the only tr00 bands are the ones that play in local garages and no one's ever heard of them! Those are also the only ones you're allowed to listen to without ridicule.

Dimmu's first two albums (For All Tid and Stormblåst) Are black metal. The rest became more commercial friendly to gain a wider audience.

Well, I think we are left to fend for ourselves. I quite enjoy it, too. What's the point of just hearing the radio? There is no point to it, it is mostly just repetitive BS. I like searching for great bands.

I think we just have to face that there are people who truly do love music and don't mind going out of our way a bit to find some great stuff, and there are people who enjoy listening to whatever is popular at the time.

I have drifted in and out of the metal scene for years, mostly depending upon my mood and frame of mind at any given time. Some of the bands that have stuck with me through all the ups and downs:

1.Bathory
2.Celtic Frost
3.Darkthrone
4.My Dying Bride
5.Forgotten Tomb
6.Sepultura “Roots” album

However, lately I have been digging the sonic landscapes of drone and ambient texturing of bands like:

1.Sunno)))
2.Earth
3.Lustmord
