I think I've posted in this topic a long time ago, but I feel like posting again...

The other day (ok probably a month ago) I saw Turisas who I've liked for quite a while, who rocked, and they were supported by a Scottish band called Alestorm who I must admit were pretty good... Scottish Pirate Metal! haha

I think no matter how many new good metal bands arise I will always enjoy and appreciate the old stuff... infact that goes for all genres really, I really enjoy listening to things like Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix etc which aren't exactly anything close to heavy metal, but they're damned awesome!

Has anyone attended any of the shows on the Pagan fest USA tour? It is coming to Arizona a week from today and I can't wait!!

Ensiferum
Turisas
TYR
Eluveitie

I just missed TYR last monday! They came to Seattle on 05/05/08... I should have called in sick so I could go see them... Oh well, I pre-ordered their new album and a long sleeve shirt. So I'm happy for now.

I could use a review of the latest Meshuggah effort if anyone has it. Passed it up for Hate Eternal and Filter yesterday.

I'm suprised you didn't say Atheist or Nocturnus.

I truly believe metal is reaching a new peak and within the next few years it will boom bigger then it ever did. There are certian bands in this day and age that are truly amazing and completely whipe out everything the past metal bands tried to do. Some such bands are: Necrophagist, Protest The Hero, Ram-Zet, Meshuggah, Amoral, Between The Buried And Me, Hieronymus Bosch, Project 13-5, Mirrorthrone, Symbyosis, Textures, The Faceless.

Some older bands like Sadist and Martyr are making quite abit of noise again and getting some really good attention.

The good stuff is out there and growing. You just have to look for it.

Hake keeps getting better with age....the guitars are the same as they've been for a while....your standard Meshuggah arrangements....though there were a few parts that really made me take note....

one thing that turns me off a little bit is the lack of range in the guitars...I mean....there's plent of f*ckin' range on an 8 string....but they seem to like to stick to just a few notes in the lower register for the most part....though constructing rhythm guitar around Hake's madness is definately a daunting task....

Memorial Day weekend, I will be busy with metal.
Thursday, I go see Gigantour in town.
Friday I go to Baltimore for Maryland Deathfest http://www.marylanddeathfest.com
Monday, I get home in Arizona and I go to see Iron Maiden.

There are a ton of new metal bands that I think are amazing it's just that there are too many bands out there. The bands that are usually at the top have the least talent simply because they are marketed to be the best. The most accessable metal bands are the ones that get the most air time while the truly amazing acts of today you usually have to look for.

Yesterday I got TYR's new album "Land" along with a free poster and a long sleeve shirt. I have to say the album really kicks ass, a lot more progressive but still good.

Along with that I got Enslaved's "RUUN" and "ISA" on vinyl. So I'll have many a drunken night listening to these great albums.

when it comes to summer time, Grind metal is always high on my list. I had a killer time again this past weekend at Maryland Deathfest!

In July, I will be going over to the Czech Republic for Obscene extreme fest again. Very fun fest with grind, gore grind, death metal, crust, and everything in between!

I think music goes in waves... At the minute Indie music is really big, but then again there was a period in the 90's when it was.

I much prefer old school Metal, or Hair Metal as I prefer to call it... the likes of Crue, Sabbath, Pantera.... But when you hear bands now like Manowar and Sworn Amongst. They are trying to bring the old skool back again...

Manowar has been doing the same thing pretty much since the early 80's...I don't think they are trying to bring something back...they have always done what they have done...

Chris 1 from way back on the front page had it correctly. There still is metal out there but the industry is so clogged by everything that often times good music is never heard by anybody except friends family and the locals....

I love metal and I still have a huge selection of Cannibal Corpse, Fecal Corpse, Dying Fetus, Suffocation, etc......

But no there will never be another metal explosion.
There will never be another Punk take over....
There will never be another new anything...
It's all been done before...
Now all we do is pick a bit from this genre and a bit from that genre mix it together and he look it's rap or nu metal or pop.....

But it's all been done before.....

I'm not terribly impressed with new metal. It doesn't have that same feel that it used to, and too much of the musicianship's been lost. Well, as far as "mainstream" bands go. Whoever said old school thrash is dead obviously hasn't heard of Evile. These guys just released their debut last year called Enter the Grave. These guys sound much like Slayer and Kreator back in the 80's.

I used to be right into death metal and black metal and such, but I just don't find that each band of these genres have the staying power that early metal bands have. That and they all start to sound the same after a while. Pioneers of death metal and black metal of course are immortal (like Death, Venom, Warhammer, Stormtroopers of Death, etc), but bands that follow don't seem to have the creative power to continue without sounding EXACTLY like the pioneers.

These days I've been revisiting the early days of WASP and Accept. It's too bad these guys didn't become as big as they should've (although WASP almost did in the early 90's).

Anybody check out Annihilator's newest release? It's pretty good. Typical Annihilator lyrics (the slightly humorous type), and lots of guest guitar work from various musicians. Actually a well-done album; one of the best from an old school thrash band in the past few years.

I think the re-discovery of electric guitar is on the horizon. Video games of guitar playing are the biggest hit with the wannabe rock stars in their teens. Rap is slowly fading as people begin to realize what being a real musician is all about. Being able to actually play an instrument gives you so much more creative freedom and the ability to reflect that with originality. Notice the re-found enthusiasm in bands like Rush, Led Zepplin,Metallica, etc., It is not just adults buying these CD's. Give it another 5 years and I think you will see metal back on the top of the charts.

Absolutely! Oh sure, it's all been done to death, but guess what? History repeats itself. Metal is bound to have another kick at the can sooner or later. With all this heavy rock regaining control of the radio (ie Offspring, Disturbed, Finger 11, 3 Days Grace, etc), people are eventually going ease back into the metal scene once again. Not only that, bands that were huge in the 80's that are still going today are going to have another shot at super stardom. I think Motley Crue getting back together is going to only help matters. Saints of Los Angelos is a cool, catchy tune, and definitely pays homage to the glam metal of yester-year.
