Posted: 11/16/2007 2:39:32 PM | Though not exactly a FAKE pic, for awhile I had a pic of a mid50s Chevy truck wedged between 2 trees, way up off the ground,as my lead pic It actually came from a greeting card...and yes it DOES really exist( somewhere near Beloit, Wisconsin, is a limestone pit owner with WAAY too much time on his hands) and you would not believe the number of emails I got asking if that was MY truck, how in the WORLD did I get it up there and how in the HELL did I get it down, LOL.
There's been some good technical info posted here about spotting stuff that's been done with PhotoShop, or pirated pics of models,but I think the most common complaint is photos that are 10+ years old, with the age listed on the profile being a downward adjustment to match the photo. There is probably not much anybody can do about that but meet the person fairly soon, before one puts in a lot of time communicating with and falling in love with a false illusion.
Believe it or not, on another site, I had some dingdong with a degree in marketing(or so he claimed) PRAISE me for being "savvy" enough to post a 'much younger picture!' I emailed back and told him that the picture was VERY recent, like 3 months,which was the absolute truth. He didn't believe me! He kept insisting that I seemed too smart to post a REAL and recent picture of myself, because everyone KNOWS all women 50+ are wrinkled old hags. About that time I emailed him back and told him that his village had called and wanted their idiot back...

I met a man earlier this summer who had posted a pic of himself at a much younger age. He was a nice guy and we had coffee, but I wouldn't see him again because things started off with a lie. He still has that same picture posted. Another guy says he has a PhD. The grammar and spelling in his profile are bad. I doubt if he could even write a thesis let alone defend one. Maybe one day they will learn that they are just biting off their own nose to spite their face. Deceipt will ruin things in the long run. | |

Thanx for the insight. I just got the guy to admit he contacted me with a fake profile. I encouraged him to delete it and he did. Too bad. He seemed to have such a nice personality. If only he had hit me up as the real him the first time instead of using a pic of his cousin. Let that be a lesson to anyone else trying the same thing.
And the "lesson" was what ?
"Don't get caught!" ?
" Be smarter next time!" ?
Bottom line, he was looking for a woman and used a fake photo as bait. You took the bait. His plan worked UNTIL he got stupid before his “nice personality” could win you over. (a meeting might have been tough , yes ?) Diseny makes a forune on these kind of plots.
Your statement about his "nice personality" is BS. It could be faked, yes ?
So what is worse, a stud with REAL nice photos who fakes a "nice personality" or a schmuck with a nice looking cousin who HAS a "nice personality"?
OP, i am sorry you got burned. But the "lesson" is not what you claim.

So it is NOT just the men as one woman posted.. It goes both ways. I agree with her in trust your instincts, if you plan on meeting him then he will either have to own up to his lies, not show up or bail out... That may be the only way to know, good luck.. | |

But because he used "bait" instead of being honest, he lost the chance he would have had. The lesson is be yourself and someone out there will love you for you. And if someone doesn't, what would you want with them anyway? | |

Most people don't take being lied to very well understandably . I would much rather see pictures of what someone looks like now then 10 years ago and 80 pounds ago . I just came across someone using David beckhams and saddam hussein's pictures a couple days ago. I called them on it , one admitted it and still pof has let them use these pictures. | |

Wow she did all that to a guy she was only "dating" i wonder just how far she would have went if they were actually in a commited relationship?.... I was always under the impression that until a couple makes a commitment to be exclusive, they can pretty much see who they want.
It would be a huge red flag to me that a woman i was only dating would go to those extremes to catch me doing something i had every right to be doing. No wonder i gave up dating, the rules just keep on changing. | |

Posted: 11/16/2007 9:37:40 PM | No one can tell absolutely for sure if someone is posting a fake picture or not. Anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of a photo editing program can mess with photos, take their head and put it on a new background etc. etc. Professional looking shots can be had by anyone that knows a thing or two about composition and lighting. Vacation/home shots of yourself can be absolutely stunning if you know to take shots the last hour before sunset. With digital cameras you can take as many as you want till you get one that looks good. In August my daughter and I snapped a bunch of photos on the beach and at my apartment. Me for POF, her for Facebook. We picked our favs and deleted the rest.
In one of my current photos there used to be a camper behind me as I was walking with my mom. I edited the camper out just by cloning the ground and trees where the camper was. If someone looks REALLY closely they might notice, but I had no intention of blowing it up to an 8x10 so I don't really care.
But I suppose that it could be deemed a fake pic, no?
Also, you can't rely on just flat, harsh or "monitor glow" lighting to tell if it's a fake photo. With the information available at our fingertips we can learn to light from front and back (women should) to get the most flattering photos possible.
There's only one way to know for absolute sure, and that is to go on webcam or meet them in person. Anything else is supposition. If they are reluctant to do either of those two things be suspicious. If they don't freak out on you when you ask them twice whether their photos are fake, be suspicious.
This would be why we meet them in public places, providing our own source of transportation.  | |

I recommend a little open, honest communication before dating. Then if the picture isnt exactly the same then it wont matter.

POF sets up many fake profiles to make this site seem like it is flooded with hot singles. im sure they set up many more fake female accounts than males but if you dont believe me or perhaps while browsing profiles you wonder why someone so hot would need to result to this site to meet people, try searching for people in other countries and you will see that they have set up profiles in many different countries and states with the same pics and info. when you email these people they either dont read it or reply at all but it still shows that they have logged in recently, or you get very generic replies from them. getting replies from these people keeps your interest up and keeps you coming back to the site which is good for their business. also, Beware of people with pics taken from extreme angles overhead. this is referred to as "the myspace angle." this allows a girl to post a pic that, in a way shows her whole body but does not show the extra pounds she is packing. lying and misleading is the same thing and it is wrong to do to people. be proud of who you are and if youre not, then take the initiative to do something about it. losing weight may be one of the hardest challenges of your life but you only get out of life what you are willing to put in. post pics that represent you as you would look in person. | |

If the picture looks too good to be true, it probably is. If they're so hot, what are they doing wasting their time on a dating site?
If the picture looks like it was taken in a studio by a professional, be VERY wary.
If the environment they are shown in does not match where they say they're from (prime example: a beautiful girl on a very eastern European looking street claiming to live in California.....) - huge red flag.
More like a red carpet.......
If there's a little voice in your head saying 'haven't I seen this picture somewhere before?', run the other way, you have.
It was either on the web or in some sort of fashion/sports magazine.
If the person looks very attractive but only has one single picture up, that is a major cause for concern.
Probably means a fake profile.

Maybe in my age group there is less duplicity because we really are looking for someone who is compatible wi th us. I have seen a few profiles on other sites that looked suspicious and some that had old pictures. I got off all of those sites when I found this site and have met several nice guys and talked to plenty of others who gave me no cause for concern. Maybe I am not really looking for "hot singles" but for a nice guy who will treat me well.
I don't know what is going on, but I feel very sorry for those who have had bad experiences. Maybe the problem is in who you are contacting. I like good looking men, too, but the rest of the person is far more important. Just don't contact or answer anyone who's profile has anything in it that makes you suspicious. | |

This is one reason that it becomes very necessary for the profile to have many pictures, and POF allows up to eight, and those pictures should show full body and up close facials that are clear and precise.
If there is only one picture or a couple but just just up close or blurry, then, if truly interested, ask to be sent at least five to 10 more when you contact them and they respond. Most have a hard time having that many "fake ones", or the ones they send you will vary enough that you will know that they are much older or from many years, not just recent.
We all have good and bad days, and some times when out in public, we are not looking our best, but for the most part, people will put pictures on their profile that make them look as good as it can be, or flattering enough to get your attention. We need to give others the chance to show both the good and bad side with recent pictures that are updated often and have a complete album ready to share with potential others wanting to meet us.
Either this or meet immediately and settle all of it now.......
