But when it comes down to actually meeting in person (which most people seem to want to do) I think I would just turn the car around and leave. Fake picture- you're a liar and that's it. I'd look at it like this... one lie... everything was a lie. I just don't get it. | |

as I look now. I can't imagine that people don't know they will be found out
when they go to meet their dates. I would think most people with fake pics have
no intention of ever meeting up with anyone.
That in itself is a little sad, but for these folks to go out into the world
and set themselves up for rejection is very sad indeed. | |

I was IMing with a POF user who seemed a lil self-concious about his pic. The pic was with his shirt off muscles bulging... Not something most guys are ashamed of. Then he introduces me to a friend of his who is also on POF. Only this guys pic is not nearly as hot. They both add me to their favorites and I see they log in within minutes of each other every day. I asked guy number one if the pic was really him and he said yes. I asked guy number two if he and guy number one were actually the same person, of course he said no. Then another day I asked guy number one if he were the same person as guy number two and he said it was the third time I had asked if the pic were fake. Actually, it was only the second time I asked guy number one. Three times if guy one and two are the same person. I'm not superficial about pics, I just don't like the idea of being blatently deceived. Has this happend to anyone else? Any suggestions as to how to spot a fake?
Fakes are:
1) Professionally posed
2) Don't quite "synch" w/ the physical description,age,etc.
3) Solo pics
4) Blurry or out of focus...
5) Pics w/ several individuals where they don't single themselves out.
6) Pics that when you ask about where/when it was taken...they don't have all the details...LOL | |

And this is why I try to meet them sooner rather than later......Because it's easy to get attached to the fantasy of what or who you think the person is online....So, if you meet...then you know....Simple.... and if you ask to meet and they make excuses then you know their pics are fake or they are lying about something..... | |

They write that they are athelic and in real life they are fat. People get on me about lying about my age because I don't want older guys to contact me. Just not attractive to older guys who look like their age or older.I look really young , Women lie about their age all the time. I rather they lie about their age than put on a fake picture of themself. Because once you meet them , its not what you vision so you are not going to like them any way. | |

Posted: 11/19/2007 10:07:25 AM | I have to agree with Dreadstalker here, I have never heard of anyone at POF setting up fake accounts, there would be no reason to do so, as they are free, Harmony, Match, AS, I can see them all doing it, amazing the emails you get when you are NOT a member vs. the ones you really get when you are a member.. From what I have heard.. I am not expecting much here, but sure have fun...And if something great should come of it, so much the better.  | |

Posted: 11/24/2007 12:30:09 AM | I find that the ones that have questionable 'too good to be true pics' only have one. I usually ask if they have a close up of their eyes and amazingly enough this is the only pic that they seem to have which is of a ripped model body that looks freshly oiled against a perfect backdrop.
I have actually had a guy send me a message from a profile from an account with an extremely gorgeous guy with a hot body and I told him point blank that I would not date a pretty boy. He sent me a message a couple hours later saying if I wasn't interested in him, his friend thought I was hot. His 'friend' looked normal and appealing, and more my type and had lots of stuff in common with me on his profile.I talked to him for a couple of days then he admitted that the first profile was actually his 'test' profile and was fake so if I was really into a guy that looked like that (no info on profile), then he knew I would not be his type. Needless to say I got pissed at him, blocked him and weirdly enough I actually know a cousin of his who not knowing that we knew each other he told him what had happened and that he screwed up and I ended up meeting him eventually anyways.
If the pic seems to be too good to be true it usually is. | |

I was new at this internet dating thing, and not nearly suspicious enough that he did not have a phone where I could call him and he only called me from work. (Big red flag!) I showed his photo to a chat friend of mine in England who's a movie buff. "Lass," he said, "that guy looks like Mark Ruffalo, the actor." Well, I'd never heard of Mark Ruffalo and said no, no, the pic's real. A few months more of things that didn't add up, and I finally went to imdb.com and looked up Mark Ruffalo, and lo and behold! There was the photo that "Iggy" had sent me! You know...I never really thought that guy's voice, which sounded like nails being scraped across tin (with a Michigan accent) went with that hunky body! Bottom line: if it quacks like a duck, but smells like a skunk...it's probably a turkey! | |

Posted: 11/24/2007 11:04:05 AM | Clues it's fake is it looks like a picture taken from a magazine and when you ask him if he has 'other pictures' he says that's all he has and doesn't know 'how to load more' on his computer. I could go on and on. If you're gut tells you it's a fake, it more than likely is. Also a lot of the people that do the nigerian scams post fake pics and their horrible grammar is a dead give away!

I've wondered the same thing. There are photos in profiles that are obviously fakes, but others may or may not be. On our MySpace page, we have been "Friended" by someone who appears to be Emma Watson -- aka Hermione Granger of the Harry Potter movies. The thing is that her profile has candid shots of a girl who is obviously Emma with her friends in a home setting -- NOT a studio publicity photo. Where would a scammer have gotten personal photos like that ?? I work professionally with Photoshop, and these don't appear to have been manipulated.
The final answer we came up with is: there's really no way to know for sure ...

Blurry one and a more serious looking one. BOTH are within the last year. Girls for god sakes use a RECENT PHOTO and DATE it in your profile. In my pic you see that i'm not a young buck. The ash gray that is showing dose not meen the fire is out either. Honesty is a necessity. a false pic is the same as lying. To me an absolute no-no to me. The first date is also the last one. NO EXCEPTIONS>
I am a man, I look for a pic that is pleasing to me. well dressed , Can I see your eyes?
There are many that I pass by because of the quality of the pic. PICTURES DON"T LIE, words do. You may not be concidered a # 10 but there is NO SUCH THING. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I have been told that I'm good looking. I am a little embarased but I accept their compliment as graciously as I can ( Even thought I have a different opinion). A picture that showes your eyes tells a lot more about you than you can imagine. I have approached a picture rated 6 becaue of the eyes. When talking person to person I look into the eyes and find little tell signs of honesty, emotions, beauty, care. and a lot more.
One more thing. NO PICTURE and I do agree , a pic spread, the more the better. BUT PLEASE The scenery that I want to see is you. I chose to write to a very attractive (TO ME ) woman because her pic showed her and a horse. Why????? I could not see the details on her. It showed herhorse more. The pic showed how much she cared for it. Clean well groomed , pride in that she cared for the horse AND HERSELF. Other attractive lady"s , On a beach Great scenery , Best left out or shown in National Geographic. "L" | |

Posted: 12/3/2007 3:11:15 PM | Okeydokey.... all of what people have said. Solo shots which looked too poised and doesn't jive with their reported age, blurred ones, etc.
Now, to the ones who have mentioned they put a younger age to distract from older guys/women from contacting them. I've seen them put their real age in the profile descriptive section. Still, imho, that's a big NO NO to put a younger age anywhere.
Reason: It wastes time for those who browse/search. Think about if you do it...how many others do it and that can add up to ... who knows... maybe only 10% or less are actually being truthful. Sad state of affairs.
A lie is a lie is a lie. Period.
Anyone check out profiles where they state these younger ages...and, then, look at their face/neck area (if exposed)? Or, around the eyes. The wrinkles are there.
What is the obsession with stating in a profile you look younger...  geez people. Deal with whatever age you are and what you look like. Dishonesty is such a turn-off! | |

I don't necessary agree with all of these reasons. There are many photo editing programs that can make a "fake" pic look real. Some people might have their pictures taken by a professional photographer. Some people aren't very photogenic. Therefore they might only have 1-2 good pics of themselves. Sometimes when you upload a pic on POF, it doesn't come out that well. I think msg 39 stated it best. Unless it is blatantly obvious, you can't tell if the pictures are fake until you meet the other person. | |
