why do people want to argue the bible? Because its forced on us. Because it influences our legal system. Because it makes claims that aren't true. Because it makes good people do horrible things. Because people who argue for it naturally draws people to argue against it. Because it strips away people's objectivity and makes them think that truth is exclusive to them. And many more.

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/20/2007 12:05:19 AM | People argue the Bible because it is held as the example by which morality may be judged. The judges are the Christians. Anything Christians don't like they claim is immoral and should be banned and outlawed for everyone even if others disagree with their moral judgement. The Bible tends to make people beieve that Christianity is the only way a moralperson can live their life thereby inferring that nonChristians are immoral. Holier than thou nonsence. That's offensive to my intelligence and I resent the Church for sticking their nose into everything. Mind your own business. | |

Why do people want to argue the bible? Our bible has already told us why people will argue. Of course, nowadays it all hides behind a mask of "reason", "critical thinking", and my personal favorite: the classic, yet ever re-worded case of the pot calling the kettle black.
The aetheists are just as religious as we are. They just don't have a god to back them...

I agree.

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/20/2007 4:12:27 PM | Yes, how right you are. People who are not religious are just as religious as people who are religious. And, we do no good. We have only the capacity for evil. Not only that, when you are in heaven we will be stuck in traffic somewhere missing out on eternal glory. It's all true. Well, I can only suppose it is, since everything I know is wrong, alas.

Hmmm. let's see, not one, but two examples of fallacious thinking in one shot. Not only does he generalize about atheists being "religious", he generalizes about believers being religious too. I have been reading your recent threads and posts, it looks like your god isn't backing you up either..... What was it you stated in your other thread??? Oh yeah: http://forums.plentyoffish.com/8708792datingPostpage4.aspx msg #76
How exactly should I respond to statements with no methodolgy behind them? So applicable here.
I agree.
The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. Psalms 14:1 So no actual thinking involved in this one, yet just another biblepuppet. So to keep this post on track, some people need to argue the bible, or using a bible without their own input, because it does the thinking for them and they don't have to. The above is a great example.

When I read this, I feel that someone is disrespecting me. Why? Because I'm no fool and I'm not currupted. I don't believe in god anymore then I believe in satan. To believe in one means to believe in the other...so why exactly am I currupted? I have more good in me then most "religious" people I know. My family goes to church and pray one hour a week and treat society like $hit for the remaining of the week. I'm sure they're not the only ones.
There is no physical proof that anything in a bible is true. There is no arc found as of yet, no den or whatever that Jesus was in for 3 days, and I have a hard time believing a man has the strength of who knows how many men of the name Samson. The reason I'm not a believer of god isn't because of curruption but physical evidence and so far there hasn't been. Just because a book says so doesn't mean I should believe it.

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 1:34:59 AM | | The reason people argue the Bible is because some Christians cant accept that other people have a right to their own religion therefeore spending their time insulting and verbally assaulting people with pphrases such as you are corrupt, or going to hell etc. And Onlychild is right its a complete lack of respect for other peoples faiths and traditions. One part of the Bible preaches love for ones fellow man, it doesnt specify that they must believe in god, just be a 'fellow man'. Disrespecting isnt showing love for ones fellow man therefore they are sinning according to their own faith. Its incongruencies like this that make the bible so arguable. | |

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 1:44:46 AM | The bible (any bible) was only written so people have permission to f*ck with our minds...
Is there a God? Maybe... ok, Probably... or whenever I want to give in; Definitly (in certain cases).
I already feel "mind f*cked" just thinking about exactly what "God" intends to do with me...

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 7:45:00 PM | So the catholic were the ones that took the ancient writeings and put them together in to one book. That dose not change the fact that the catholic are a side shoot, my faith was passed down to me from Adam. Yes it has changed some with the teachings of Jesus but Adam's God and my God is the same God I am not part of any earthly organization, i am however 1 of a very long list of believers that started with Adam and Eve. | |

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 7:52:01 PM | I figure that if the Vatican admits that certains words were mistranslated, but they refuse to fix the errors for some reason or another, that in itself proves that the Word is prone to errors by mankind. therefore that makes the whole suspect, and open to "interpretation"...and we all know that no two people are ever going to agree 100% on such a vast and far reaching book as the bible.
Also...if people are talking about it...they buy it. This fact alone has made the bible a best-seller for a long time. $$$ CHA-CHING!!!

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 8:06:42 PM | Believers argue the bible because it is largely held among them as the ultimate athority. Non believers argue the bible because it condems them and if they can prove it wrong then they can feel less condemed, and of corse it helps if they can get more people to believe the way they do. There is comfort in number. | |

The Bible contradicts physics, biology, geology, geophysics, astrophysics, history, archeology, common sense, morality, and itself. I have no idea why anyone would try to argue that it's true.
Can you prove that... in each point?

Let's start with the bible contradicting itself.
1 Timothy 6:15-16 (NIV)
15 which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.
Genesis 32:30 (NIV)
30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, [a] saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared."

yup, that's always been my reason. It was hurtful in the beginning, but now I laugh...

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 10:40:05 PM | Astrophysics: Genesis 1:3-5 (NIV)
3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness. 5 God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.
Genesis 1:16-18 (NIV)
16 God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the expanse of the sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.
God creates light, day and night on the first day, but only afterwards creates the sun and stars on the fourth.

Genesis 32:30 (NIV) 30 So Jacob called the place Peniel, [a] saying, "It is because I saw God face to face, and yet my life was spared." That's very, very disingenuous of you. Jacob wrestled with God in the form of a man, what's called a "Theophany". Jacob understood that he had wrestled with God, but God was in the form of a man.
There is no contradiction except for those who must have one.

Jacob understood that he had wrestled with God, but God was in the form of a man. It doesn't specify what form god takes in timothy. But if you must, here is another contradiction to Timothy: Exodus 33:9-11 (NIV)
9 As Moses went into the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and stay at the entrance, while the LORD spoke with Moses. 10 Whenever the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance to the tent, they all stood and worshiped, each at the entrance to his tent. 11 The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend.
There is no contradiction except for those who must have one. There is no contradiction for those who refuse to see it.

| why do people want to argue the bible Posted: 11/21/2007 11:11:22 PM | | It only takes one contradiction to prove the method unreliable. To prove it reliable, you must refute ALL contradictions. I can't say whether or not this particular contradiction is correct, but it's futile to refute only one, much less such a weak [theological, not factual] one. | |

It's funny you should say this about non-believers....I find believers of god try to get people to believe then non-believers. Every winter when I go shoping at the mall, there's a bunch of christians getting into my face with their religion and that it's right. At first I was polite and told them my family is catholic and have no interest but they still insist. One time I got so pi$$ed at them after I asked them to leave me alone I finally snapped that I was satanic and if they know anything about satanism they better back off. I never seen so much fear in my life and I had to laugh at them. But the point is I have to yell at them to leave me alone. I thought accepting god is one's choice, not something to shove done one's throat? I'm surrounded by friends and family that are religious and the only ones that push it in my face are the ones that should be reading and studying their bibles because they are no way a better person then I am. The ones that don't push it are the ones that truly believe in their religion and understand what the bible teaches. JMO.

As a non believer, I argue the bible not because I think it has any validity or any particular use, but because so many of my fellow human beings take it seriously and have beliefs based upon it. And those people influence my world based upon those ignorant and dangerous beliefs.
As to the bible 'condemning' me, I find that as frightening as an adult suggesting I should be worried because I'm on Santa Clause's 'naughty' list, or that the boogeyman is going to get me when I'm asleep. The only frightening thing about that would be that the person telling me actually honestly believes it. And that we have such people in some very powerful positions, like for example the White House.

What do you hope to accomplish by appearing victimized by disagreement? Wouldn't that be the entire point to this thread?

I can't say whether or not this particular contradiction is correct, but it's futile to refute only one, much less such a weak [theological, not factual] one. That is perfect logic. Sarcasm- The belief that a cosmic Jewish zombie who was his own father can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced by a talking snake to eat from a magical tree....... am I off on this one?
