| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/3/2008 3:01:14 PM | I try to run long posts through the spell checker program I have. And I run my profile through the spell checker.
But it does not always catch the mistakes. Example. I transpose words a lot like the word 'is' and write 'si.
Both are legitimate words with different meanings.
And I am old enough where typing was an elective in public shcool and in my class , the only guy in the class ( other than myself) was one of the 'bad boys in shcool'. The rest of the class was filled with girls.
So when you are in your 50's, unless you worked on a PC for a living and are a man, you are not comfortable or good at typing.
Of course some people just can't write to save thier lives, can't spell 'cat' or they use slang that no one outside a chatroom addict will undertand.
I personally hate hard to understand computer slang. Shows insecurity (I am smarter than you crap) or someone who is lazy.
Would I rule out someone that shows an interest in me just because her profiles is not perfect in spelling or grammer-HELL NO.

I don't even reply to those that 'type-as-they-talk' ..here in the forums . . !! I can accept a few obvious typos . . but 'texting' type of communication .. or poorly assembled words ..{Prolly , 'cuz , all though , mabbee . . etc }.. merely inspire me to -privately- ridicule their Potential . .

Posted: 1/3/2008 3:35:35 PM | I took an optical illusion tests on Facebook last night that is similar to others I've seen before. In one test it's been shown that people usually know exactly what's being said provided the first and last letters of a word are correct.
So, sure I would -- if I actually wanted to talk to that particular person in the first place.
One of the reasons I enjoy posting to the forums so much is to challenge myself to express an idea using the correct spelling and grammar within the 15 minute edit period. But how well I do depends on how I'm feeling.
Have never re-read my posts and found so many errors as I have in the last six days. I've been suffering from a cold, my eyes are half shut, and based on re-reads the next day the rest of me is only half there too.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/3/2008 8:03:52 PM | To APerfectLifeForMe---- I have found that men who message with poorly spelled/incorrect grammar filled emails are almost always not the kind of guy I want to hang out with. One poster here said to check their profile, which I agree with. We all make typo's, so I am not referring to one or three "i"s where the "e's" should be.... The ability to communicate oneself well, to articulate and write as a thoughtful, well-informed person, is a critical asset for a man ( or woman) to have. I don't date men who cannot manage that skill. So, Perfect, I am right there with you, for whatever that may be worth. It isn't about trying to be everybody's English teacher, just seeking a higher level of communication and interaction. I know what works for me, and guys who can't spell or write very rarely have the characteristics I find compelling. Did you ever get emails that are all caps ???? Geez Marie, I hate those !!! Or, the guys who write like this: r u doing ennything 2 nite ?
Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. LOL I figure if it's too much effort for them to write above the level of an 11 yr old, it's likewise too much effort for me to translate. :):):):) Another poster here said it is a form of bias to expect adult level spelling and grammar from a potential date.....I couldn't agree less. As they write, so they think, so caveat emptor ! Stick to your guns, honey....a sub-literate person will probably not make you happy. Best Wishes for 2008~ PhoenixWmn

If its a misspelled word or gramatical mistake that keeps you from contacting that person then really I would not want someone that shallow..
I do agree that wus up cus emails are the exception to the rules..
The following is not arogance but I would say that I score higher then most in an iq test then at least 50% of those who reject for gramatical error.
and I can back that claim up

Posted: 1/3/2008 8:33:07 PM | I know I am not a good speller and my text grammar is not the best. having being dyslexic has to do with this grammar was a difficult subject for me and my teachers didn't know how to teach me. but I am far from dumb I have high verbal skills if somebody wants to pass me up because they think I am not good enough for them. bye bye..

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/3/2008 8:40:51 PM | I type exactly the way I speak. so some words get elongated when I'm typing them, but that's just how it works in my head.
I can take spelling mistakes, mistakes, not blatent misspellings. I mean. I can't spell to save my life most of the time. Vowels, I will mix all of them up, but chatspeak anywhere outside of a text message where you pay by letter, is ridiculous.
Also... is the shift key a hard thing to master? This one confuses me also. XD

It bothers me. A lot. Sometimes I can pick out when it is a matter of dislexia and will reply. But when it is obviously a matter of not being careful... uhhhh buh-bye - It is too big of a turn off if the guy won't even proof read his email.
Did you proofread? It's "dyslexia", not "dislexia". Ironic to see somebody complain about something that they are doing, too.

Okay. When I first read that, I just laughed and chuckled and scrolled on by. But I came back to it because it bothered me...so now I'm going to call you on it. What POSSIBLE data could you have access to, to underwrite the absolutely ludicrous and wildly speculative claim you make ??? Your claim infers you have either conducted IQ tests on ALL persons who "reject for grammatical errors", or, that you have somehow magically obtained IQ scores for persons ( whose exact number I would like to know, since you certainly must have it in order to make such a statement) ...and does that number speak to the global mass of persons "rejecting for grammatical error", or just the known universe of POF members ???
I have to disagree, darlin'....it is nothing BUT arrogance. Persons I have known/worked with/studied with/befriended with above-average IQ's RARELY make public claim to that. Nothing good comes from it. And my take is, if the IQ is that exceptional, they'll preserve it's integrity by investing time to communicate themselves well....in areas such as spelling and grammar. It is a matter of pride, you see, not arrogance. I probably shouldn't have bothered with this one, but I just couldn't help myself. Nice thing about message boards is, everybody gets a whack at it, yes ? PhoenixWmn

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/4/2008 2:52:59 AM | I've never thought of myself as much of a good speller, but with spell-check, Google & the edit feature there's no excuse except laziness.
When someone repeatedly misspells simple words, yes it's a real turn-off.
The following is not arogance but I would say that I score higher then most in an iq test then at least 50% of those who reject for gramatical error. and I can back that claim up " WOW, I thought I was up myself. Listen, go stick your head up a dead dogs bum & smell the roses.
By the way, you made 4 spelling mistakes & at least 1 grammatical error in that quote, but no ones perfect.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/4/2008 6:31:32 AM | Sorry all.. but I also will not seriously consider anyone who cannot communicate well in this language.
I know that most professions require good communicate skill... spelling is the rock-bottom basic necessity for that skill. It does speak volumes about the education and hence the profession (or lack) of the person if they do not have communicate skills.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/5/2008 8:28:19 AM | In profiles and emails, bad spelling and grammar are inexcusable (and a red flag), especially for people claiming to be professionals of some sort. In forums and IM chats (where typing is fast and spontaneous), its understandable. I give some flexibility when English isn't someone's first language (my ex- was south american). In these cases, it is sometimes difficult to transpose correctly and English can be confusing (Threw, Through; to, too, two, etc).
But thats the exception to the rule (Same as I would hope someone does when I try talking spanish where one time I was trying to say "I am very hungery" and came out with "I have many men."- Hombre vs. Hambre).

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/6/2008 3:06:24 PM | I am the self proclaimed Spelling Police and even I make transpositional errors when typing on IM. I try my best to catch spelling errors on posts and in emails, but some slip through. I think this is common for most people. What I can't stand, and will not reply to or read are people who use the following:
TypIng iN wEiRd CapS uSaGe fORmats (hard to read, usually not worth my time)
Letter-speak such as "R U Str8?" (What in the world does this crap mean?)
Run on sentences
People who refuse to use punctuation
Having no grasp of the English language
Most of the issues with people not having a clue about grammer, usage, spelling, etc are thanks to the wonderful US public school programs AKA "no child left with a mind". You can tell when someone is having problems and is trying versus laziness and stupidity. I will give anyone a chance as long as they are trying.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/6/2008 3:50:45 PM | Misspelling does not imply that a person is stupid and should be disregarded - I am slightly dyslexic and do have problems with spelling certain words although I do try to check any messages that I send, sometimes I get it wrong but hey, sue me! I am also a member of Mensa so apparently my I.Q. is above normal but someone will think I'm not worth the effort because I have a spelling problem? Oh please! give us "imperfect" human beings a break! we can't all be perfect! | |
