| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/11/2008 9:28:28 AM | In my field of business, I am required to interface with people that have nether knowledge or vocabulary to accurately express theirselfs well~ most often
They've got problems ~ and thats all they really know ~ and want them to go away. Some, ` attempting to be helpful, explaining in great detail. ~ I always listen, for I know they are attempting to get something important across ~ however garbled it might seem to be.
I've accepted it as being part of the job ~ and really it's one of the best parts of my job, I enjoy it ~ I really do.
It's quit comical at times ~ but my job ~ is to solve problems. I do not consider these people dumb or stupid. ~ for their short- comings in skills. ~ But forgive me if I sometimes find it impossible to hold back a chuckle.
And so it is ~ for all you teacher's out there ~ all the men and women that diction, grammer and spelling is all a part of your daily profession. ~ feel free to get and big laugh! ~ or to completely discount someone for grammer or diction if you chose.
But remember this ~ what goes around , comes around
I'll think about this thread ~ as I write out my next invoice ~ dar

I completely agree with you...
By the by, I am a high school teacher and in one of my classes I teach "shop" math. Basically these students will be damned good future tradesmen...
Do not ask them to write an essay or "masturbate" their minds trying to decode what Shakespear meant with his "weird" English... (I am French... so pardon my errors also.)
Anyway... Those kids are smart. At the risk of appearing annoying, I would like to see these people, who perfectly mastered only one language, to try to fix or renovate a bathroom or install electrical material or build a frame for a house or install bricks and weld metal...
I totally understand...
By the by... Those students are a fun bunch... I never get bored with them. Their problem solving skills are creative and they surprise me constantly.
Anyway... All this to say, that we all have our talents and we should try to respect our boundaries.
Just a thought... I suggest that those perfect literate people, try to write in an other language and see how it feels to try and communicate your ideas rather than worry about every "written" word.
Anyway... I am gently tip toeing out of this thread... It is too annoying... I want to hang with people that make mistakes...

I went out with this guy who had misspelled words on his profile. I gave him a chance, and He turned out to be a real looser. It should of been a big red flag when he said that he knew how to treat the Laddy's! What a Homo! lol. He was also a father of TO daughters. Did you mean TWO daughters? Or should YOU be discounted for not knowing the difference between TO and TWO?

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/13/2008 12:35:57 PM | [In my prior post addressing this question, I spelled the word judgment wrong. I actually said: "When people spell words wrong, it makes me think they are not intelligent."
Hmmmmm... maybe I should re-evaluate!]
I think you just got the point that I and others have been trying to make. Making spelling errors, especially when English is not your first language, is not an indicator of intelligence. As I mentioned in one of my previous posts, I am well educated, but English is not my first language so I make spelling and grammatical errors sometimes. But I work my butt off to make sure that I am not making these mistakes because of lack of effort.
P.S. I really hope that not all Americans are as arogant as the majority of the people who responded negatively to this question.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/13/2008 12:57:36 PM | | Well I do make an exception if English is not the writer's first language. Perhaps if they mention that they will get a better reception. Everyone makes the odd spelling or grammatical error. But generally it IS a good way to rate intelligence. And those lower case i's are just lazy... I have to say that for me, personally, the ones with bad spelling and bad grammar are the first to be deleted. My spelling is not always the best but it is perfectly possible to cut and copy into a word document for a spell check. It takes about 30 seconds. | |

Posted: 1/13/2008 1:11:40 PM | hey dont worry about it, it could be their keyboard skills and not putting their spell check on. I have a terrible habit of not checking my spacing etc and i see myself as a well educated person, with pretty good grammer skills. Don't give up on them straight away, find out by emailing them a couple of times and if it is repetative, then you know they arn,t as bright as you would of hoped. The decision will be your's then hun..............................good luck and remember we all have faults!!! there are no perfection's on earth, spelling could be their only fault and you could be letting a great love go for the sake of a wrongly written letter. Hey just think of the fun you would have teaching them the right way.... best wishes patsy x

Well, of course, that's always a possibility. I had a very badly spelled, grammatically incorrect message from a guy once. I went to his profile and found it similary constructed. I assumed he was an immigrant.
He seemed like a decent and sincere man, so I replied, and after a few more e-mails, equally difficult to read as his first message, I asked where he was from.
Saskatchewan. They speak English there, mostly.
Edit for message 401: OK, I get it, He said in HIS profile that he had TO daughters and knew how to treat the LADDYS. Still, you blew it when you said "should OF been a big red flag". Physician, heal thyself.
As in so many other requirements here, you can't ask for it if you don't have it.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/14/2008 12:36:49 AM | I don't really care how bad the spelling or grammar is, it's just plain good manners to respond to all messages. Even a simple "thanks but no thanks" is better than no response at all. I don't like it when people don't respond to my messages, so I think it would be only fair to respond to theirs.
I have a very good friend, who I met through a dating site.....just good friends, there was never going to be anything more, more like brother and sister. Now, this friend has TERRIBLE grammar and spelling, it used to take me forever to decipher what he was writing, but we ended up meeting for coffee (well, pizza and a bourbon or six, lol) and I found that in person he was one of the most intelligent, well spoken people I had come across in a very long time. So I have to agree with the posters who say to at least give these people the benefit of the doubt. This friend of mine was not experienced with computers at all, but over the 2 years or so that I have known him, he has shown some improvement in his spelling and grammar.
The one thing I find most irritating in chat or emails though, is "text-speak". Now THERE is a completely lazy way of communicating! I admit, I do make one or two concessions to it, but I rarely use it even in a text message. Sure, it takes me longer to get my message across, but at least I can make myself understood.

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/14/2008 9:18:38 AM | I always enjoy the grammar threads...
Typos are usually fairly easy to spot: some people take the time to proof-read their messages/posts, some don't. We're all human, so mistakes will occasionally creep through as the human mind has a quirky little tendency to play what you INTENDED to write in your head versus what's actually on the page...
However I can't help but chuckle sometimes when I receive pick-up lines from 40-year old women that can't write to save their lives, using a combination of shorthand, IM-acronyms, ghetto slang and garbled English... When the message is THAT hard to read, from one of my ELDERS no less, then I usually reply with a curt declination of further contact (unless she's really hot )
My most recent bout with bad spelling/grammar was with one girl that chose to contact me, but occasionally inverted the negations on her contractions, e.g. she'd put CAN'T when the context of the sentence implied CAN, and vice-versa.
By the end of her message my brain hurt from trying to decipher if she was a foreigner that was new to English, slightly mentally-challenged, or just being sarcastic!

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/14/2008 6:53:00 PM | | I do not like to read profiles with incomplete sentence, no punctuation, or spelling errors. If a person can not take the time to edit their posts I will not take the time to speak to them. I assume that the person is not to bright or just does not care, either of which does not turn me on. | |

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/15/2008 6:56:32 AM | Depends...
What if the error is made because English is not his or her first language?
... on "one hand”, it is not fair to assume ones intellect through first impression of a couple words on a computer screen... NEVERTHELESS, it is a hard call... does not take much effort to spell check before posting... :-)
(TIP: people type your thoughts into MS WORD and SPELL CHECK and then copy it into the web page....)

| If someone emails you with misspelled words and bad grammar, do you respond? Posted: 1/15/2008 12:43:22 PM | | I'm a writer, and so I tend to be a bit overly picky about my writing, as well as that of other people. I may let the occasional spelling or grammar mistake slide, particularly in instant messengers, but enough e-mail messages reading something like "r u availble 4 diner?" begin to cause my opinion of that person's intelligence to take a nosedive. | |
